In Days of Battle, Dr. Norbert Számvéber, chief of Hungary's military archives, examines armor combat operations in the southern territory of the historical Upper Hungary (part of Hungary between 1938 and 1945, at the present time now part of Slovakia) in three separate studies. The first is an account of the battle between the Ipoly and Garam rivers during the second half of December 1944, in which the élite Hungarian Division "Szent László" saw action for the first time. The second study examines the fierce tank battle of Komárom, fought between January 6th–22nd of 1945. This was an integral part of the Battle for Budapest, parallel in time with Operation Konrad. The third study describes the combat during the German Operation Südwind in February 1945, as well as the Soviet attack launched in the direction of Bratislava in March 1945. Book excerpt: Using the Armor Officer Advanced Course (AOAC) as a case study, this report identifies alternative approaches for individual training and analyzes their cost implications. The study shows that 5 percent of the material in the AOAC is unrelated to job performance and could be considered for elimination from resident training. The study also finds that distributed training can provide some savings; however, its potential is limited because the amount of the distributable material is smaller than initial expectations-on the order of 25 percent, not the 40 to 60 percent called for in initial planning. Cost savings from distributed training depend on the mix of training media and technologies to conduct it (the higher tech the mix, the greater the start-up costs and the smaller the recurring savings) and on whether sufficient capacity exists to conduct it at soldiers' home stations. Ultimately, the study argues for a modest role for distributed training, involving in-place technologies such as paper, videotape, and personal computers, and only as much material as can be absorbed by soldiers and field units without interfering with daily operations and readiness.

The first portion of the research focuses on discerning how armor was used in past jungle conflicts. The Pacific campaign of World War II and the Vietnam War are examined to determine the historical role of armor in a jungle environment. Early employment of armor in these two conflicts is examined to determine the criteria for use of armored forces in the jungle and examines the tactics, techniques, and procedures that were developed during these conflicts. The second portion of this study focuses on the feasibility of current employment of armor in a jungle environment. Current Army and Marine armored doctrine is examined and interviews are conducted to determine if current armored systems could and should be employed in jungle warfare. Additionally, officers from foreign countries are interviewed to determine how armored forces are employed in the jungle areas of their countries.
