Book Effects of Degraded Mode Gunnery Procedures on the Performance of M1 Tank Gunners

Download or read book Effects of Degraded Mode Gunnery Procedures on the Performance of M1 Tank Gunners written by Bob G. Witmer and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unit Conduct of Fire Trainer (UCOFT) was used to determine the effects of using degraded mode gunnery procedures on the performance of 48 M1 experienced noncommissioned officers. Using the Gunnery Index as the measure of proficiency, gunnery performances under three different degraded conditions were compared to performances under fully operational conditions. Results suggest that using degraded gunnery procedures adversely affects the performance of experienced armor crewmen, with the most dramatic performance decrements occurring when degraded conditions require the use of the Gunner's Auxiliary Sight (GAS). Performance did not improve significantly under degraded conditions after a brief period of degraded gunnery practice on the UCOFT, suggesting the need for specialized degraded gunnery training programs. Keywords: Degraded mode of gunnery; Degraded conditions, Armor, Performance measurement, Gunnery trainers, M1 tank; Tank gunnery, Gunnery trainers.

Book COFT Conduct of Fire Trainer A New Concept in Tank Gunnery Training

Download or read book COFT Conduct of Fire Trainer A New Concept in Tank Gunnery Training written by D. E. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of developing and sustaining armor crew gunnery proficiency has become increasingly challenging in recent years due to operational and training costs and limited range availability for realistic gunnery training. The Unit-Conduct of Fire Trainer (U-COFT) was thus developed to provide armor force commanders the capability for improving and sustaining crew gunnery combat readiness between range firing periods. A total training system consisting of crew station, visual, and instructional subsystems, the U-COFT is housed in three environmentally controlled shelters that afford limited mobility and self-contained operation. It will be deployed with armor and infantry battalions in 44 locations throughout the free world. The U-COFT instructional system features an extensive library of exercises which train all the gunnery tasks required of a crew in combat, plus an adaptive training management function that permits each crew to improve its proficiency at a rate commensurate with its ability. This paper briefly describes the unique instructional features incorporated in the U-COFT traning system. (Author).

Book The Effects of Amount of Ml Unit Conduct of Fire Trainer U COFT Transition Training on Crew Gunnery Proficiency

Download or read book The Effects of Amount of Ml Unit Conduct of Fire Trainer U COFT Transition Training on Crew Gunnery Proficiency written by David A. Campshure and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examined the effects of three types of variables on crew M1 Unit Conduct-of-Fire (U-COFT) gunnery proficiency during transition training: time spent training on the M1 U-COFT, soldier-based variables (e.g., time with partner, time in armor), and training-based variables (e.g., classroom hours, time spent on the M60A3 U-COFT). The reliability of the gunnery proficiency test was also assessed. Three groups of TC-gunner teams were tested after having completed 3, 6, or 9 hours of transition training on the M1 U-COFT. Time spent on the U-COFT resulted in improved gunnery performance on only one of seven criterion measures--average miss distance. Since this was the most sensitive measure of gunnery performance, the results suggest that learning may have taken place despite the failure to detect performance improvements on six of the seven criterion measures. Although the three groups differed significantly on a number of training-based variables, only the number of exercises completed in the TC training matrix had an effect on any of the performance measures. The reliability of all of the criterion measures exceeded 0.50, with the reliability of two measures exceeding 0.70. (sdw).

Book Effects of NBC Protective Equipment and Degraded Operational Mode on Tank Gunnery Performance

Download or read book Effects of NBC Protective Equipment and Degraded Operational Mode on Tank Gunnery Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tank gunner's performance in the M1 Unit Conduct of Fire Trainer (UCOFT) was tested while wearing Mission Oriented Protective Posture (MOPP) gear under normal and emergency operational mode conditions. A pretest, in both experiments, determined initial performance for possible use as a covariate on experimental test performance. In Experiment I, the subjects performed six different test exercises. Results of Experiment I indicated that MOPP gear and emergency operational mode degraded fire time, percent hits, and aiming error. MOPP gear and normal operational mode degraded aiming error only. The degradation in performance was dependent on the type of exercise. In Experiment II, the subjects performed four different test exercises. Results of Experiment II revealed degradation on all performance measures during emergency operational mode. No performance decrements were found for MOPP gear and no interaction between MOPP gear and operational mode occurred. The degradation in fire time and aiming error caused by emergency mode was dependent on the type of exercise. Multiple correlations between fire time and experience variables were significant, particularly overall time as a gunner.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to reduce the costs and increase the efficiency of initial and sustainment training of XM1 armor crewmen, the Army is exploring the use of simulators for driving and tank gunnery. Assessment of transfer of training to operational equipment and estimation of the predictive validity of proficiency on a simulator are addressed empirically by the Army's operational testing system for device evaluation. The purpose of this report is to present the products prepared in response to the Task 1 and Task 2 requirements for Mission-Based Simulation and Training Requirements to design institutional training for XM1 driving and gunnery, and unit sustainment training for XM1 gunnery. Specifically, three products are presented: Capabilities analyses for XM1 armor crewman training devices; Recommended training program for XM1 armor crewman institutional training; Recommended unit sustainment training program for XM1 gunnery. This book was released on 1997 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "New command, control, and communication technologies will affect soldier training requirements. Emerging training requirements for Army leaders include: (a) competency on a wider variety of tasks, (b) the ability to exploit the capabilities of new technologies, and (c) a clear understanding of digital tactics, techniques, and procedures. The current effort, Simulation-Based Multiechelon Training Program for Armor Units - Digital (SIMUTA-D), contributes a first step toward solving some of the key training challenges faced by Force XXI. The SIMUTA-D program features Movement to Contact, Deliberate Attack, and Defense in Sector training support packages which support execution-focused, battalion task force staff training for the digitally-equipped battlefield. This orientation guide provides the training unit with sufficient information to prepare to conduct training for the digital battlefield in a virtual (SIMulation Networking SIMNET) or constructive (Janus) environment. In addition, it serves as a quick reference that briefly describes the essential duties and responsibilities of the training unit and an observer/controller team."--DTIC.
