Book Diamonds from the Arkhangelsk Province NW Russia

Download or read book Diamonds from the Arkhangelsk Province NW Russia written by Victor Garanin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines and summarizes data on more than 40,000 diamonds from deposits in Russia’s diamondiferous Arkhangelsk province. The geological data of diamond deposits includes the geological setting, ore body morphology and mineral composition. Investigation techniques employed include: Color Cathode Luminescence, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, Raman Spectroscopy, and Carbon Isotopy. The book provides a full description of the diamond morphology. The problems of a potential (mantle) diamond grade for deposits are considered, depending on the physical and chemical conditions involved in the genesis and growth of diamond crystals. Further, there can be a significant impact on the productivity of bodies and the properties of diamonds during post-crystallization metasomatic processes. In this book, the authors propose a diamond crystallization model for changes in diamond crystals within mantle metasomatic transformations, and identify the factors affecting the growth and dissolution of diamonds in the mantle. In addition, they describe the complex evolution of kimberlite from the mantle up to the Earth’s surface. All of these factors affect the quality and quantity of diamonds in a particular diamond deposit, providing the basis for identifying optimal technological mining processes.

Book Archangel

Download or read book Archangel written by John Cudahy and published by . This book was released on 1924 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following requests from Britain and France to send troops to Russia to fight the Red Army, President Woodrow Wilson ordered the formation of the Northern Russian Expedition, also known as the Polar Bear Expedition and Archangel Campaign (after the Russian city, Arkhangelsk). The expedition was tasked with defeating the Red Army in Northern Russia. Lenin and the Bolsheviks were strengthening ties to Germany which allowed the Germans to send troops fighting in Russia to the Western Front against Britain and France. John Cudahy was a lieutenant of the 339th Infantry Regiment that was part of the expedition. This captivating first-hand account of the desolate winter months sees American soldiers fight for their lives along the Vologda railway. It also importantly provides a valuable and insightful political critique of the connection between the Archangel Expedition and the Vladivostok Expedition, asking questions that were not answered by the statesmen for American soldiers facing death and unknown dangers. Though he personally believed the mission to be a waste of American life, Cudahy's memoir of the campaign is filled with stories of exceptional courage and comradery.

Book Living Places in Russia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Living Places in Russia, photographer Dyranda Prevost and architect Natalia Dushkina have conveyed life in Russia at a critical moment in history, recording 22 homes in both city and country. Westerners remember the Berlin Wall, and its momentous fall that followed glasnost and perestroika; this book reveals the concealed, historic changes to the walls containing ordinary Russian people since the 1917 Revolution. Documented in 1990-1991, and completed in 1999, the images and voices in this book are a revelation; a collective image of various professions and strata living in a variety of buildings built in different periods. These photographs capture the ambience of a lived-in 'place' and the messages conveyed by its objects. The interviews allow the inhabitants to tell their own stories and express their constant longing for freedom and tranquility, epitomized by life in the countryside - in however humble a place that may be.

Book Gender Violence in Russia

Download or read book Gender Violence in Russia written by Janet Elise Johnson and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-18 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just a few years ago, most Russian citizens did not recognize the notion of domestic violence or acknowledge that such a problem existed. Today, after years of local and international pressure to combat violence against women, things have changed dramatically. Gender Violence in Russia examines why and how this shift occurred—and why there has been no similar reform on other gender violence issues such as rape, sexual assault, or human trafficking. Drawing on more than a decade of research, Janet Elise Johnson analyzes media coverage and survey data to explain why some interventions succeed while others fail. She describes the local-global dynamics between a range of international actors, from feminist activists to national governments, and an equally diverse set of Russian organizations and institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Russian identity and historical experience has been largely shaped by Russia's imperial past: an empire that was founded in the early modern era and endures in large part today. The Russian Empire 1450-1801 surveys how the areas that made up the empire were conquered and how they were governed. It considers the Russian empire a 'Eurasian empire', characterized by a 'politics of difference': the rulers and their elites at the center defined the state's needs minimally - with control over defense, criminal law, taxation, and mobilization of resources - and otherwise tolerated local religions, languages, cultures, elites, and institutions. The center related to communities and religions vertically, according each a modicum of rights and autonomies, but didn't allow horizontal connections across nobilities, townsmen, or other groups potentially with common interests to coalesce. Thus, the Russian empire was multi-ethnic and multi-religious; Nancy Kollmann gives detailed attention to the major ethnic and religious groups, and surveys the government's strategies of governance - centralized bureaucracy, military reform, and a changed judicial system. The volume pays particular attention to the dissemination of a supranational ideology of political legitimacy in a variety of media - written sources and primarily public ritual, painting, and particularly architecture. Beginning with foundational features, such as geography, climate, demography, and geopolitical situation, The Russian Empire 1450-1801 explores the empire's primarily agrarian economy, serfdom, towns and trade, as well as the many religious groups - primarily Orthodoxy, Islam, and Buddhism. It tracks the emergence of an 'Imperial nobility' and a national self-consciousness that was, by the end of the eighteenth century, distinctly imperial, embracing the diversity of the empire's many peoples and cultures.

Book excerpt: Shows that the Russian Civil War was not a struggle between a Communist future and a Tsarist past but rather was a bloody fight among diverse factions in a postrevolutionary state. Focusing on the sparsely populated Arkhangelsk region in northern Russia, Novikova shows that the anti-Bolshevik government there, which held out from 1918 to early 1920, was a revolutionary alternative bolstered by broad popular support.
