Book Arkansas Backstories Volume Two

Download or read book Arkansas Backstories Volume Two written by Joe David Rice and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like its companion book, this second volume of Arkansas Backstories will amaze even the most serious students of the state with surprising insights. How many people are aware that a world-class yodeler from Zinc ran against John F. Kennedy in 1960 for the top spot on the national Democratic ticket, or that an African-American born in Little Rock campaigned for the Presidency nearly 70 years before Congressman Shirley Chisholm made her historic run? Or that bands of blood-thirsty pirates once lurked in the bayous and backwaters of eastern Arkansas, preying on unsuspecting Mississippi River travelers? Likewise, how many readers will recognize the fact that an English botanist who spent months investigating Arkansas's flora in the early nineteenth century has been described as the worst explorer in history? That Fort Smith hosted the world's first international UFO conference? Or that the Nielsen rating system has a direct connection to the state as does Tony Bennett's signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco"? Such tidbits are among the unexpected elements that make the Natural State so tantalizing. Written in an informal, conversational style and nicely illustrated, Arkansas Backstories Volume Two will be a wonderful addition to the libraries of Arkansans, expats, and anyone else interested in one of America's most fascinating states.

Book excerpt: Once Upon Dickson tells the story of Dickson Street, Fayetteville, Arkansas, the colorful and ever-changing link between the center of town and the University campus. Carefully researched, it will appeal to a large popular audience of residents and visitors to the city's premier entertainment district and to University personnel and alumni, for whom it is as memorable in their college experience as Old Main or Razorback Stadium. In a time when Dickson Street is undergoing radical change, the book serves as a reminder that the street has been changing almost from the earliest time in its history. Residences, churches, public institutions, and businesses have come, gone, and sometimes come again, but because of its location, Dickson Street remains at the heart of Fayetteville.

Download or read book Arkansas City written by Heather D. Ferguson and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2008-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arkansas City has often been called "the gateway to the West." The name lends a lot to describing the town--a town that was founded as a border town to Indian Territory, a major trade hub to the Indian agencies in Indian Territory, and a major transportation center for those wishing to travel through the territory and farther west. Arkansas City started off as a small town with false-fronted stores but became a bustling community where the people were forward thinkers and pushed for quality and modernization in everything they brought to the city whether that was business, industry, or entertainment. Arkansas City is known for the Cherokee Strip Land Rush of September 16, 1893, interaction with the Native Americans in Indian Territory, farming, ranching, and aircraft. Although Arkansas City was a civilized community, it was a city on the fringe of a lawless and unsettled territory where outlaws lurked and Native Americans were forced to settle. People loaded their wagons or went by train to cross through Oklahoma to Texas, New Mexico, or Arizona, leaving from Arkansas City. Due to Arkansas City's location, interaction with major figures and events in history, and its importance to travel farther west, Arkansas City was truly "the gateway to the West."
