Book Aristotle s De Anima

Download or read book Aristotle s De Anima written by Gerrit Bos and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Zeraḥyah's Hebrew translation of De Anima, Aristotle's monograph on the soul, is of major importance for the history of transmission of Aristotle's text in the Middle Ages. De Anima, commented upon by Greek philosophers such as Alexander of Aphrodisias and Themistius and Arab philosophers such as Avicenna and Averroes, was a major source of inspiration for medieval Arab and Jewish philosophers. The Hebrew translations of Averroes' commentaries, prepared from 1189 on, were very influential in Jewish intellectual circles. One of the translators involved in this activity was Zeraḥyah ben Isaac ben Shealtiel ḥen, who also translated Aristotle's De Anima. This translation is extremely important since it is based on the same lost Arabic translation as Averroes' long commentary. The solution which Zeraḥyah's translation provides for the question of the authorship of this lost Arabic translation thus also holds good for Averroes' text.

Book Sergius of Reshaina Introduction to Aristotle and his Categories Addressed to Philotheos

Download or read book Sergius of Reshaina Introduction to Aristotle and his Categories Addressed to Philotheos written by Sami Aydin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physician and commentator Sergius of Reshaina (d. 536) composed two related texts in Syriac about the philosophy of Aristotle, chiefly dealing with themes discussed by Aristotle in his Categories, but also with his teaching on space as found in the Physics. This book presents a critical edition and English translation of the shorter of these texts. A survey of Sergius’ life and works is given in the introduction and the intellectual context of his education in Alexandria is outlined, with focus on the medical and philosophical curricula of the Alexandrian school. Sergius’ line of thought is clarified and his text is compared to Greek commentaries on the Categories that also present the teaching of his Neoplatonist master Ammonius Hermeiou.

Book Nicolaus Damascenus De Plantis Five Translations

Download or read book Nicolaus Damascenus De Plantis Five Translations written by H.J. Drossaart Lulofs and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For three centuries the treatise De plantis has been poorly represented by a Byzantine Greek translation of a mediocre Latin version made from the Arabic, which in its turn came from a Syriac rendering of the lost original. Since this Byzantine version was four times removed from the Greek exemplar, its authority was, to say the least, questionable. However, it was printed in 1539, and in spite of ubiquitous disapproval found its way into all subsequent editions of the Corpus Aristotelicum. In the present book the fragments of the Syriac version and the text of the four other translations (Arabic, Latin, Greek, Hebrew) are edited afresh. As far as possible, the manuscriptal evidence is complete, and each text is provided with an introduction and copious notes concerning philological problems. A few of the numerous commentaries are added and the vexed question of whether Averroes had written a commentary on De plantis is treated at some length.

Book Aristotle s Meteorology in the Arabico Latin Tradition

Download or read book Aristotle s Meteorology in the Arabico Latin Tradition written by Pieter L. Schoonheim and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle’s Meteorology: a twin set in Mediaeval Text Tradition. The Greek text of Aristotle’s Meteorology is in places highly problematic. Its edition by Fobes (1922), however, is a highlight in editorial technique. The Arabic version (c.800) is of quite different form and content. The two editions by Badawi (1961) and Petraitis (1967) were subject to considerable improvement. The present edition was done on the basis of the two extant Arabic manuscripts. The edition of the Latin translation (12th c.) from the Arabic has been constituted on the basis of 5 manuscript sources, out of 110 copies. The status of both the Arabic and the Latin texts was bad, but not hopeless: as the Latin version stands near to its Arabic predecessor, the text of the latter gives support to the editing of the text, as well as for the understanding of the contents. And this procedure works vice versa. The present edition of the texts has been completed with an Index of technical terms in Arabic, Greek and Latin and Registers on the Greek and Latin. Further a Bibliography and List of Latin manuscripts are presented.
