Book Aristophanes and the Poetics of Competition

Download or read book Aristophanes and the Poetics of Competition written by Zachary P. Biles and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athenian comic drama was written for performance at festivals honouring the god Dionysos. Through dramatic action and open discourse, poets sought to engage their rivals and impress the audience, all in an effort to obtain victory in the competitions. This book uses that competitive performance context as an interpretive framework within which to understand the thematic interests shaping the plots and poetic quality of Aristophanes' plays in particular, and of Old Comedy in general. Studying five individual plays from the Aristophanic corpus as well as fragments of other comic poets, it reveals the competitive poetics distinctive to each. It also traces thematic connections with other poetic traditions, especially epic, lyric, and tragedy, and thereby seeks to place competitive poetics within broader trends in Greek literature.

Book Aristophanes Comedy of Names

Download or read book Aristophanes Comedy of Names written by Nikoletta Kanavou and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristophanes, the celebrated Greek comic poet, is famous for his plays on contemporary themes, in which he exercises fierce political satire. Ancient political comedy made ample use of comically significant proper names - much as is the case in modern satire. Comic names used by Aristophanes for his satirical targets (public figures, everyday Athenians) provide the main subject of this book, which addresses questions such as why particular names are chosen (or invented), and how they relate to the plays' characters and themes.

Book Greek Interjections

Download or read book Greek Interjections written by Lars Nordgren and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interjections in Ancient Greek have long lacked a comprehensive account, despite their frequent occurrence in major texts. The present study of their semantics and pragmatics, encompassing all items encountered in Greek drama from the 5th century BC, applies a moderate minimalism, theory-driven method. Readers are offered a thorough and detailed study of this elusive, and in several respects deviant, class of linguistic items.

  • ISBN : 9004330305
  • Pages : 718 pages

Download or read book written by Gert-Jan van Dijk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first study to focus on the numerous ancient Greek fables occurring outside (and predating) the extant fable collections. Divided into three parts, its core is an intertextual analysis of the functions of fables and their allusions. Here the author covers many different authors and a variety of genres in Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic Greek Literature, ranging from lyric to historiography, from Aristotle to Hesiod and from Agamemnon to Zopyrus. This analysis is based on a study of both modern and ancient fable theory - the latter having hitherto never been studied in toto, and incorporating the Graeco-Roman terminology of the genre. The book's third part is a collection of all texts (and contexts) studied, which greatly facilitates cross-referencing.

Book Brill s Companion to the Reception of Aeschylus

Download or read book Brill s Companion to the Reception of Aeschylus written by Rebecca Futo Kennedy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brill’s Companion to the Reception of Aeschylus explores the various ways Aeschylus’ tragedies have been discussed, parodied, translated, revisioned, adapted, and integrated into other works over the course of the last 2500 years. Immensely popular while alive, Aeschylus’ reception begins in his own lifetime. And, while he has not been the most reproduced of the three Attic tragedians on the stage since then, his receptions have transcended genre and crossed to nearly every continent. While still engaging with Aeschylus’ theatrical reception, the volume also explores Aeschylus off the stage--in radio, the classroom, television, political theory, philosophy, science fiction and beyond.
