Book The Washington D C of Fiction

Download or read book The Washington D C of Fiction written by James A. Kaser and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In The Washington, D.C. of Fiction: A Research Guide, James A. Kaser provides detailed synopses for nearly four hundred works published between 1822 and 1976 and bibliographic information for hundreds more published since. Plot summaries, names of major characters, and location lists are also presented. Although this book was written to assist researchers in locating works of fiction for analysis, the plot summaries have enough detail for general readers so they can develop an understanding of the way attitudes toward Washington, and what the city symbolizes, have changed over the years. Similarly, the biographical section demonstrates the wide range of journalists, politicians, society women, and freelance writers who were motivated to write about the city."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Fall River

    Book Details:
  • Author : Catharine Williams
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1993-09-02
  • ISBN : 0195359348
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Fall River written by Catharine Williams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-09-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catharine Williams (1787-1872) lived most of her life in Rhode Island, where she supported herself and her daughter by a productive literary career. Her most compelling work, Fall River, last published in 1833, recreates a notorious incident in the ill-fated town of Fall River, Massachusetts: the trial of a Methodist minister for the murder of a pregnant mill worker whom it was suspected he had seduced. Williams's investigative report offers a vivid contemporary view of the lives of poor "factory girls" and of clerical corruption in the industrial towns of early New England. While based in fact, the book raises themes of sexual and religious hypocrisy and exploitation that may be compared with those of novels like The Coquette, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and The Scarlet Letter. At the same time, the author's mixture of journalism, biography, fiction, and exhortation makes this "authentic narrative" an unusual challenge to traditional notions of literary form and yields fresh insights into the nature of early American women's writing.
