This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States of America, From the Discovery of the Continent, Vol. 2 England, by a vast majority, declared the executive power to be a conditional trust; and the hereditary assembly of patricians, struggling in vain for the acknowledgment of a right of suc cession inherent in birth, after earnest debates, accepted the theory of an original contract between king and people. The election of William III. To be king for life was a triumph of the perseverance of the more popular party in the commons over the inherited prejudices of the aristocracy. In this lies the democratic tendency that won to the revolution the scattered remnant of the good old republicans this appropriated to the Whigs the glory of the change, in which they took pride, and of which the tories regretted the necessity. This commended the epoch to the friends of freedom throughout the world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Americans in Their Moral, Social, and Political Relations, Vol. 2 of 2 In this disposition of Americans the attentive peruser of history must evidently behold a wise dispensation of Providence, though it may for a time impede the progress of refinement and the arts. Without the spirit of enterprise and the taste for active labour, the immense resources of the country, and the facility with which riches are acquired, would become the means of indi vidual and national corruption and the intro duction of expensive habits, which would not only undermine the private morals of the people, but eventually subvert their republican government. I had intended, Mr. Walker, ' said I, to have spent a cheerful evening at the Cross Keys; but these gentlemen seem to be any thing rather than good fellows.' No, no, ' returned Walker; I grant you they are not such good fellows as we used to meet in Duke's Court; but they are indifferent good in one sense. They be men of good government; being governed as the sea is, by their noble and chaste mistress the moon, under the light of whose countenance - they steal.' Book Stories of Freedom in Black New York

Download or read book Stories of Freedom in Black New York written by Shane WHITE and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of Freedom in Black New York recreates the experience of black New Yorkers as they moved from slavery to freedom. In the early decades of the nineteenth century, New York City's black community strove to realize what freedom meant, to find a new sense of itself, and, in the process, created a vibrant urban culture. Through exhaustive research, Shane White imaginatively recovers the raucous world of the street, the elegance of the city's African American balls, and the grubbiness of the Police Office. It allows us to observe the style of black men and women, to watch their public behavior, and to hear the cries of black hawkers, the strident music of black parades, and the sly stories of black conmen. Taking center stage in this story is the African Company, a black theater troupe that exemplified the new spirit of experimentation that accompanied slavery's demise. For a few short years in the 1820s, a group of black New Yorkers, many of them ex-slaves, challenged pervasive prejudice and performed plays, including Shakespearean productions, before mixed race audiences. Their audacity provoked feelings of excitement and hope among blacks, but often of disgust by many whites for whom the theater's existence epitomized the horrors of emancipation. Stories of Freedom in Black New York brilliantly intertwines black theater and urban life into a powerful interpretation of what the end of slavery meant for blacks, whites, and New York City itself. White's story of the emergence of free black culture offers a unique understanding of emancipation's impact on everyday life, and on the many forms freedom can take.

Book The Revival of Aristocracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Revival of Aristocracy Classic Reprint written by Oscar Levy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revival of Aristocracy Imes of disruption are not favourable to great men. When the Roman Empire sank to the depths before the deluge of Christianity, it was not long ere what was left of the firm Roman rocks was swept away in the dun floods. When the German Revolution, euphemistically baptized the Reformation, gave the Renascence of Italy its death-blow, not one man arose capable of stemming the unlocked waters. It was only at the third and last plague of this description, namely, the breaking of the French Revolution over Europe, that Nature was kind, and created - after the manner of some of her bacilli - the remedy to counter the disease, a Napoleon to baffle anarchy.
