God is not above or separate from the world, humanity, or mere objects for, as Nature, He inheres in everything. To Wittgenstein, logic is not above or separate from language, thought, and the world. The hardness of the logical "must" inheres in states of affairs, facts, thoughts, and linguistic acts. Outside there are no truths or sense—only nonsense. Through close readings of the texts based on lessons drawn from radical paradigm change in science, Baltas finds in both works a single-minded purpose, implacable reasoning, and an austerity of style that are rare in the history of philosophy. He analyzes the structure and content of each treatise, the authors' intentions, the limitations and possibilities afforded by scientific discovery in their respective eras, their radical opposition to prevailing philosophical views, and draws out the particulars, as well as the implications, of the arresting match between the two.

Within his oeuvre, however, the unparalleled Logoi stand out, and while scholars have embraced it as a rich source for Imperial-era religion, politics, and elite culture, the style of the text has presented a persistent stumbling block to literary analysis. Setting this dream-memoir of illness and divine healing in the context of Aristides' professional concerns as an orator, this book investigates the text's rhetorical aims and literary aspirations. At the Limits of Art argues that the Hieroi Logoi is an experimental work. Incorporating numerous dream accounts and narratives of divine cure in a multi-layered and open text, Aristides works at the limits of rhetorical convention to fashion an authorial voice that is transparent to the divine. Reading the Logoi in the context of contemporary oratorical practices, and in tandem with Aristides' polemical orations and prose hymns, the book uncovers the professional agendas motivating this unusual self-portrait. Aristides' sober view of oratory as a sacred pursuit was in tension with a widespread contemporary preference for spectacular public performance. In the Hieroi Logoi, he claims a place in the world of the Second Sophistic on his own terms, offering a vision of his professional inspiration in a style that pushes the limits of literary convention.

Book excerpt: Aristides de Sousa Mendes was a Portuguese aristocrat who became the consul at Bordeaux shortly before World War II. Gradually more and more requests for asylum and for visas to portugal arrive at his office until the floodgates are opened onto a mass exodus of Jews and people with mixed nationality. Mendes must pass every request through his superiors before allowing the refugees passage - a lengthy process. Mendes soon realises, as the request become more and more urgent, that he has no time to waste. People will die without his help, so he starts to stamp visas before he has recieved approval. Then comes a document from Salazar's government stating that Jews and people without fixed nationality should be refused access to Portugal. Mendes, believing that he has no time to lose in hisflight for their lives, acommodates all that he can on the floors of his quarters and signs and signs. He signs visas 24 hours a day - undoubtedly saving thousands of lives - until the frontiers are finally blocked by France.
