Book excerpt: NAVOCEANO conducted two oceanographic surveys in the ocean area off Point Arguello, California, one in January and one in November-December 1964. The primary purpose of the surveys was to investigate the currents of the area; however, standard Nansen casts were taken, and bottom sediment and plankton samples were obtained. Parachute current drogues were principally used to describe current movement off Point Arguello. A strong westerly flow along the northern portion of Santa Barbara Channel was noted in the surface layers. A corresponding easterly flowing current also was noted in the southern portion of the channel. The major features of the surface flow appeared to be a counterclockwise rotating eddy just off Point Arguello and a deflection of the California Current due to the influence of Rodriquez Dome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of Southwestern Santa Barbara County, California: Point Arguello, Lompoc, Point Conception, Los Olivos, and Gaviota Quadrangles The lowland area north of the river takes in the southern portion of the Santa Maria Basin, which within the area mapped comprises the Lompoc Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, Burton Mesa, Purisima Hills, and parts of Los Alamos Valley and San Rafael foothills. The stratigraphic section of this basin consists of marine Miocene and Pliocene and terres trial Pleistocene which becomes very thick along the Los Alamos synclinal trough. The Burton Mesa, Purisima Hills, and San Rafael foothills are anticlinal areas; the intervening valleys are synclinal. The small portion of the San Rafael Mountains mapped is a block of Franciscan rocks thrust southwest toward the Santa Maria Basin.
