To make the problem tractable it was limited to modelling the probability estimates of the minimum or maximum condition along a line or in an area, or of the maximized minimum in a fraction of the area. In the absence of an analytical solution a Monte Carlo technique, applied to a Gaussian variable, was used to obtain answers that are presented graphically. Two models are described, one shown to be effective with macroscale events; the other, and more interesting model, is shown to be effective with the mesoscale phenomena of quantitative precipitation in areas ranging from a few hundred square kilometers to more than 50,000 sq. km. Book excerpt: Techniques to estimate reentry vehicle weather erosion parameters from satellite measurements are described. The techniques were developed over a period of three years. An empirical approach was followed with simultaneous measurements of clouds by aircraft and satellite sensors in a series of 41 cases covering a great range of cloud conditions. For each case the aircraft measurements of clouds supplemented by surface weather reports and radar pictures were converted to profiles of hydrometeor densities vs altitude. The erosion parameters predict the amount of material eroded from a nosetip and the range error of the reentry system due to erosion by ice and water particles in the atmosphere. The erosion parameters were related to infrared and visible satellite imagery data from NOAA ITOS satellites by means of non-linear equations. Equations were also developed to estimate total cloud mass and thickness from the same satellite data. Extensive applications and tests were made of the equations to estimate erosion parameters from satellite data.

Book excerpt: Formerly, for the solution of the conditional probability of a single predictand, its equivalent normal deviate (END) was obtained, under the assumption of multivariate normality, by linear regression on the END's of the predictors. For the joint probability of two predictands, the approach is to find the two corresponding END's by the same method, but in addition, to find the conditional correlation coefficient between the predictands. Such correlation has proved to be the well-known partial correlation. In a few test examples, the conditional correlation has decreased significantly from the more basic unconditional correlation. However, the conditional correlation has remained large enough to make the conditional probabilities significantly higher than the mere product of the two marginal probabilities. (Author).

Book excerpt: If the probability of a 24-hour rainfall, exceeding 1/2 inch, is 10 percent over a small area like a barn, how much greater is the probability of such an amount falling somewhere within a 1000-sq mile region. The generalization of this problem is to relate the probability of a meteorological event at a single location to the problem of its occurrence within a specified area or along a specific line of travel. A Monte Carlo technique was applied to a variable that is normally distributed everywhere in a horizontal space. The procedure produced synoptic maps in which the correlation between the elements at two stations decreases determinably with increasing distance between the stations. On each synoptic map the minimum in various-sized areas or along line segments of various lengths was found. From a large number (like 10,000) of such synoptic fields it was possible to plot estimates of the probability distributions of areal minima (or maxima) or minima (or maxima) along lines of travel. This kind of modelling was tested and found effective on temperatures along flight-path segments of several hundred to several thousand miles in length at 100 mb and on New England 24-hour rainfall. It relies on a widelyused stochastic rainfall generator, extendedto accommodate nontraditional dependence patterns—in particular spatial upper-tail dependence in rainfall—through a copula function. The methodology is applied to a recentlylaunched index product insuring against excess rainfall in Uruguay. The model is first calibrated using historical daily rainfall data from the national network of weather stations, complemented with a unique,high-resolution dataset from a dense network of 34 automatic weather stations around the study area. The degree of downside spatial basis risk is then estimated by Monte Carlo simulations and the results are linked to both a theoretical model of the demand for index insurance and to farmers’ perceptions about the product.
