And one of the central questions of that time was: Does predestination provide us any answers? This book has its origins in the 1960s, while the author majored in both religion and history at Ohio Wesleyan University. At the time, there was no work in the literature solely devoted to comparing and contrasting the words of John Calvin and Martin Luther in regard to their thoughts about the doctrine of predestination, nor was there an extensive bibliography devoted to this subject. The search and the passion to understand whether we live or die (from an eternal perspective) is an ongoing mental and spiritual effort for all of us.We have the Bible and we have the Koran. We have many religions and many authors have written on the subject of human existence and human destiny. The writings from hundreds and thousands of years in our past cannot be insignificant, and those writers deserve our full attention as we seek the truth of our very being. God bless.

Paulson considers the two "monsters" of theology, as Luther calls them: evil and predestination. He explores how these produce fear of God but can also become the great and only comforts of conscience when a preacher arrives. Luther's new distinction between God as he is preached and God without any preacher absolutely frightened all of the schools of theology that preceded it, and for that matter all that followed Luther, as well. That fear coalesced in various opponents like Eck and Latomus, but in a special way in Desiderius Erasmus. Book excerpt: Jacobus Arminius (1560 -1609), the Latinized name of the Dutch theologian Jakob Hermanszoon from the Protestant Reformation period, served from 1603 as professor in theology at the University of Leiden. He wrote many books and treatises on theology, and his views became the basis of Arminianism and the Dutch Remonstrant movement. Arminius wrote that he sought to teach only those things which could be proved from the Scriptures and that tended toward edification among Christians (with the exception of Roman Catholics, with whom he said there could be no spiritual accord). His motto was reputed to be "Bona conscientia paradisus," meaning, "A good conscience is a paradise." Arminius taught of a "preventing" (or prevenient) grace that has been conferred upon all by the Holy Spirit and this grace is "sufficient for belief, in spite of our sinful corruption, and thus for salvation." Arminius stated that "the grace sufficient for salvation is conferred on the Elect, and on the Non-elect; that, if they will, they may believe or not believe, may be saved or not be saved." William Witt states that "Arminius has a very high theology of grace. He insists emphatically that grace is gratuitous because it is obtained through God's redemption in Christ, not through human effort." Arminius referred to even faith as being received from God as a gift.
