Book Are We Helping Them Beyond the Spear The Impact of a Developmental Support Program for Black Male Student Athletes

Download or read book Are We Helping Them Beyond the Spear The Impact of a Developmental Support Program for Black Male Student Athletes written by Jessica Anne Francis and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black male student-athletes are not graduating near or at the same rates as their counterparts. Moreover, many are leaving college underprepared professionally and personally. These young men often dream and work toward competing professionally to earn significant amounts of money; however, few make it to the next level. While in college, many Black male student-athletes experience identity foreclosure in which they underinvest in the development of other areas or identities (such as academics) at the expense of overinvestment into their athletic careers or identities (Charleston and others, 2015; Marcia, 1966). This disproportionate investment can lead many of them to not graduate and subsequently be underprepared for life after college, both professionally and personally. The National Collegiate Athletic Association and other member institutions have sought to enable all student-athletes to grow in their development through different programming and departments. The study site, Florida State University, created the Leaders Yearning for Excellence (LYFE) program to combat this issue, specifically affecting Black male student-athletes. LYFE seeks to raise the graduation rates of Black male student-athletes at Florida State by utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy. Research on culturally relevant pedagogy implies that students can learn and develop through a purposeful cultural lens (Ladson-Billings, 1995). The purpose of this study is to learn about the experiences of Black male student-athletes in LYFE and the impact of the LYFE program on current LYFE members (LYFEletes). The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach to answer the research questions: (1) What are the experiences of Black male student-athletes who participate in the LYFE program, and (2) What program components do participants find most impactful to their perceptions of degree completion, and their professional and personal development? The results of this study indicated that LYFEletes understand the importance of obtaining a degree. Furthermore, they experience connection in relationships and broadened horizons through their engagement and participation in the program. Their engagement in the program led to a greater sense of belonging as well as a way to combat identity foreclosure. The LYFE program illustrates that implementing CRP positively impacts Black male student-athletes' personal and professional development.

Book Excellence Beyond Athletics

Download or read book Excellence Beyond Athletics written by Sule Anibaba and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper explores how elite African American male student athletes negotiate and form their identities as athletes and the effects these processes have on their post-graduate life. Factors such as college values and experiences often translate into differential post-graduate changes. This paper explores the role of trans-formative counseling as a mechanism for making the transition for African American male student athletes into non-athletic life more smoothly, with the ultimate goal of helping them achieve optimal educational and life outcomes. Student athletes are often the most celebrated groups on campus, but they are simultaneously exposed to unique social and developmental pressures. Studying Black (in this work, African American and Black will be used interchangeably) male student athletes allows policy and program administrators to examine both the consequences of over-identification with an athletic identity while examining a group which is most impacted by this phenomenon."--Abstract, p. 1.

Book Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan A Manual for Supporting and Enhancing the Academic Progress of Black Male Student Athletes

Download or read book Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan A Manual for Supporting and Enhancing the Academic Progress of Black Male Student Athletes written by Frederic Benjamin and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College sports have a profoundly positive effect on the vast majority of student-athletes who go on to pursue careers in something other than sports but this phenomenon has not translated equitably to the Black Male Student Athlete. Between 2007 and 2010, Black men were only 2.8% of full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students but comprised 57.1% of football teams and 64.3% of basketball teams; The NCAA's ongoing campaign to highlight the positive outcomes of participating in collegiate athletics has failed to address many of the underlying issues affecting Black male student-athletes. Specifically, there is perpetuation of the "myth that the road to success is paved with sports contracts, not diplomas." Black male student-athletes are often socialized to value sports over academics at a young age because athletic talent can mean access to a college education and improvement in the social and economic status of the athletes and their families. Once Black male student-athletes matriculate, colleges and universities often reify this educational disequilibrium by succumbing to the pressures of winning and by reaping substantial financial benefits at the expense of their academic success. This project emphasizes the responsibilities that athletic department staff (ADS) have to deconstruct how the lived experiences of Black male student-athletes can negatively impact their academic progress, identify how their perceptions and stereotypes of these students cause them to unconsciously objectify them, and encourage engagement in practice that shifts from a deficit model approach to one that recognizes their community cultural capital. They must question their practices to identify how they are unconsciously contributing to the disenfranchisement and marginalization of these students during their collegiate careers. ADS must recognize how their expectations are shaped by a prevailing negative social narrative about Black males and an industry that emphasizes revenue and entertainment value at the expense of the intellectual and social development of many student-athletes. Moreover, they must balance institutional pressure to win against the responsibility to provide culturally relevant support that allows Black male student-athletes to be more fully seen and included in all aspects of campus life.

Book The Collegiate Athlete at Risk

Download or read book The Collegiate Athlete at Risk written by Morris R. Council and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are numerous books documenting the challenges of student athletes and presenting recommendations for academic success. They primarily focus on understanding the issues of student-athletes and recommendations are oftentimes overly simplistic, failing to explicitly provide interventions that can be executed by student-athlete support personnel. In addition, the topic of supporting student-athletes who are academically at risk and/or are diagnosed with high incidence disabilities has been overlooked by scholars resulting in few publications specifically focusing on providing strategies to the staff/personnel who serve these populations. The general target audience is college/university practitioners who interface with student-athletes who demonstrate academic and social risk in the realm of athletics. These stakeholders include but are not limited to: academic support staff, student athletes, parents, coaches, faculty/educators, counselors, psychologists, higher education administrators, student affairs professionals, disability services coordinators/personnel, as well as researchers who focus on education leadership, sports, and special education. All of these groups are likely to find this book attractive especially as they work with student-athletes who are at-risk for academic failure. Also, it is ventured that this book will become the staple text for the National Association of Academic Advisors (N4A), the official organization for all personnel who work in collegiate academic support and can be used by members of intercollegiate athletic associations to reform policies in place to support at-risk student-athletes.

Book Black Male Student Athlete Success

Download or read book Black Male Student Athlete Success written by Tony V. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research explored the major strains that Black male student-athletes experience while attending a Division I Power-Five conference institution and the coping strategies they use to mitigate the strains while being a student and an athlete. Many scholars contend that sports are as important as academics in the lives of students. This is especially true for minorities as many believe sports provide access to academic institutions that might normally be out of reach. As the NCAA now reports that Black student-athletes exceed their White counterparts in most revenue-generating Division-I sports, their graduation rates continue to lag behind. This research used a qualitative case study approach and The Bowman Role Strain and Adaptation Model (BRSAM) as the theoretical framework to explore the strains and coping mechanisms that impact Black male student-athlete persistence. This research identified "time" as the primary strain that is experienced by student-athletes. A lack of time subsequently creates additional strains, which included those related to academics, engagement, and meeting the expectations of their sport. The study also identified athletic student services, family support, religion and spirituality, self-motivation and resilience as coping strategies used by student-athletes to manage stress. This study has implications for increased collaboration between athletics and academics; improvement of campus-wide student counseling and advising; reducing regulations that add mental health pressures to the already unique challenges of the student-athlete experience; and improving persistence and degree attainment for Black male student-athletes.

Book Why Are We Losing Our Black Male Student Athletes

Download or read book Why Are We Losing Our Black Male Student Athletes written by Shawn R. Hawkins and published by . This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My reason for writing about the Black Male Student-Athlete is because he has the highest high school drop-out rate. Most Black Males drop out of high school by the tenth grade. Our Black Male Student-Athletes are not prepared academically at an early age to complete high school and college eligibility requirements, receive scholarships, attend college, and earn degrees. The formula for resolving this situation is: Black Male + Student-Athlete + Sports + Academics + Elementary School + Middle School + High School Graduate + College Scholarship + College Graduate = College Degree + Bonus: A Professional Athlete with a College Degree. WHY ARE WE LOSING OUR BLACK MALE STUDENT-ATHLETES? outlines why starting children out in academics at an early age is just as important as starting them out early in sports. In particular, this book provides the Black Male Student-Athlete with a how-to approach to academics. The Black Male Student-Athlete picks a sport, or two or three, at an early age. However, the Black Male Student-Athlete must also receive help with his academics at the same early age. It is just that simple. Or is it? While sports are staying the same, academics are becoming increasingly more difficult, making it harder today for the Black Male Student-Athlete to graduate from high school with a diploma, let alone get into and out of college with a degree. So...What can be done about this? The answers are in this book.

Book Unmasking Barriers Unleashing Potential

Download or read book Unmasking Barriers Unleashing Potential written by William London Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black male student-athletes at predominantly White institutions (PWI) are funneled through Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) programs where advisors primarily focus on maintaining NCAA athletic eligibility instead of degree completion, which is detrimental to their academic identity development. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of academic advisors within SASS programs at PWIs to understand how they perceive their role in supporting the academic identity development and degree completion of Black male student-athletes. To investigate this phenomenon, the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews, a focus group, and maintained a researcher's journal. This research was guided by one overarching central research question, with two sub-questions: 1. How do academic advisors who support Black male student-athletes as part of a Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) program at predominantly White institutions describe their lived experience? a. How do academic advisors describe the challenges they face in supporting the academic identity development of Black male student-athletes at predominantly White institutions? b. How do social justice frameworks inform advising practice within Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) programs at predominantly White institutions? Three interconnected modes of thought supported the conceptual framework that informed this study: (a) college student development theory, (b) advising practice, and (c) critical race theory. The researcher introduced the CSS Framework identifying critical support practices that activate student success which includes: (a) centering the lived experiences of Black male student-athletes, (b) naming and resisting structural violence, and (c) implementing critical pedagogies. Four recommendations were suggested: (1) Top-level university leadership should prioritize diversity and inclusion in their hiring practices within Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) programs to ensure their most at-risk populations, who are overwhelmingly Black and male student-athletes, receive the support they need; (2) Athletic programs (recruiters, coaches) should involve Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) advisors in the recruiting process and vet potential recruits with consideration of their academic dispositions; (3) In consideration for the academic implications of student-athletes transferring from one institution to another, policymakers should work with NCAA member institutions to create standardized four to six-year student-athlete degree paths and waive residency requirements; and (4) Because of the valuable work Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) advisors perform in support of vulnerable student-athlete populations, their practice should be informed by an intimate knowledge and dependence on theory as a basis for practice. Keywords: academic identity, academic advising, anti-racism, degree completion, Black male student-athletes, student-athlete academic support programs.

Download or read book The New Plantation written by B. Hawkins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Plantation examines the controversial relationship between predominantly White NCAA Division I Institutions (PWI s) and black athletes, utilizing an internal colonial model. It provides a much-needed in-depth analysis to fully comprehend the magnitude of the forces at work that impact black athletes experiences at PWI s. Hawkins provides a conceptual framework for understanding the structural arrangements of PWI s and how they present challenges to Black athletes academic success; yet, challenges some have overcome and gone on to successful careers, while many have succumbed to these prevailing structural arrangements and have not benefited accordingly. The work is a call for academic reform, collective accountability from the communities that bear the burden of nurturing this athletic talent and the institutions that benefit from it, and collective consciousness to the Black male athletes that make of the largest percentage of athletes who generate the most revenue for the NCAA and its member institutions. Its hope is to promote a balanced exchange in the athletic services rendered and the educational services received.

Book The Miseducation of the Student Athlete

Download or read book The Miseducation of the Student Athlete written by Kenneth L. Shropshire and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 DIGITAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST SOCIAL IMPACT BOOK The student-athlete's life: practice, gym, weight room, film review, repeat. Simply put, sports come first. Academics is a distant second. As the revenues generated by big-time college sports continue to skyrocket, virtually all of the debate involves whether (and how much) student-athletes should be paid for play. Kenneth L. Shropshire and Collin D. Williams, Jr., argue that "student" has to come first in student-athlete: the focus should be on prioritizing a meaningful education. In The Miseducation of the Student Athlete: How to Fix College Sports, Shropshire and Williams draw on new research to reveal that it has become increasingly difficult for college athletes to balance school and sports, much less a social life, leading to serious economic, professional, and emotional consequences for young people. Given that fewer than 2% of all college men's basketball and football players will play at the professional level, the other 98% of student-athletes must be prepared to find and perform well in jobs outside of their respective field of play. In this bold call to action, Shropshire and Williams explain how we got here and what can be done about it. They lay out The Student-Athlete Manifesto, a roadmap to increase the likelihood that student-athletes can succeed both on and off the field. They also offer a Meaningful Degree Model, which ensures education pays for everyone, along with stories of success that show it is possible to be both a student and an athlete. A critical read for student-athletes, sports leadership, policy makers, and anyone who loves college sports, The Miseducation of the Student Athlete has the potential to disrupt college sport and create lasting change.

Book excerpt: Out of Bounds explores the trajectories and challenges of exceptional men and women athletes who later became outstanding academic scholars. The book reports findings from participatory, qualitative research, and problematizes ways we have come to think about the separation and integration of athletic and academic practices - embodied in both institutions and individuals, and reflected through intersecting categories and experiences of race, gender, and social class. Through the provocative and surprising narratives of gifted athletes who became prolific scholars, this book offers significantly new ways of thinking about the connections, contradictions, and possibilities of sports and schools.

Download or read book Beyond Beliefs written by Ronald A. II Moses and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation will examine athletic academic advisors' professional beliefs regarding academic challenges and preferred advising style for supporting the retention and matriculation of Black male student-athletes. Drawing on the key principles of intersectionality as a conceptual framework, I hypothesize that athletic academic advisors with shared social identities and similar past experiences will have also have similar perceptions of which advising style is best wen working with Black male student-athletes. A survey will be distributed to athletic academic advisors' professional listservs and social media groups. Multinomial logistic regression test will be used to analyze multiple choice scale items, while open-ended items will be qualitatively coded. One goal is to help determine if differences in perception correspond to social groupings such as race, socioeconomic status or gender. These groupings are popular variables in research on athletic academic advising and athletic center cultures. A second goal is to explore if perceptions correspond to other, less studied group memberships such as political affiliation and athletic identity. A better understanding of athletic academic advisors' identity and perceptions will be useful when developing practices to improve academic outcomes for Black male student-athletes.

Download or read book Beyond the Game written by Courtney Allison Gay and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current climate of renewed college student activism, athletic administrators have grappled with how to respond to student-athletes' engagement around social justice issues. While sport has long been a platform utilized to highlight social issues and bring about social change, many athletic administrators have responded to student-athletes' engagement around social justice issues by focusing on minimizing disruption and avoiding conflict and controversy; some have even sought to discourage student-athletes from speaking out on social issues. In contrast, other athletic administrators have recognized student-athletes' engagement around social justice issues as an opportunity for student learning and development. As such, the purpose of this instrumental case study was to explore the environmental and organizational conditions that fostered the creation of an educational leadership program in an NCAA Division I athletic department in the effort to engage student-athletes around racial justice, diversity, and inclusion. Key findings of this case study included the identification of contextual elements and an alignment with institutional values and culture as key environmental conditions and organizational characteristics that shaped the institution's ability to create and implement the program. Student-athletes' participation in the program resulted in several learning outcomes including the development of their reflective, empathy, and perspective-taking skills, enhancement of their understanding of the power of their athletic platform, improvement of their cultural competency, and preparation to engage in critical conversations. Additionally, the program helped foster a stronger sense of community among student-athletes and encouraged them to seek connections beyond the athletic realm.
