Download or read book Collected Mathematical Papers written by A. Ostrowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication was made possible through a bequest from my beloved late wife. United together in this present collection are those works by the author which have not previously appeared in book form. The following are excepted: Vorlesungen uber Differential und Integralrechnung (Lectures on Differential and Integral Calculus) Vols 1-3, Birkhauser Verlag, Basel (1965-1968); Aufgabensammlung zur Infinitesimalrechnung (Exercises in Infinitesimal Calculus) Vols 1, 2a, 2b, and 3, Birkhauser Verlag, Basel (1967-1977); two issues from Memorial des Sciences on Conformal Mapping (written together with C. Gattegno), Gauthier-Villars, Paris (1949); Solution of Equations in Euc1idean and Banach Spaces, Academic Press, New York (1973); and Stu dien uber den Schottkyschen Satz (Studies on Schottky's Theorem), Wepf & Co., Basel (1931). Where corrections have had to be implemented in the text of certain papers, references to these are made at the conc1usion of each paper. In the few instances where this system does not, for technical reasons, seem appropriate, an asterisk in the page margin indicates wherever a correction is necessary and this is then given at the end of the paper. (There is one exception: the correc tions to the paper on page 561 are presented on page 722. The works are published in 6 volumes and are arranged under 16 topic headings. Within each heading, the papers are ordered chronologically according to the date of original publication."

Download or read book Contemporary Trends in Discrete Mathematics written by Ronald L. Graham and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete mathematics stands among the leading disciplines of mathematics and theoretical computer science. This is due primarily to its increasing role in university curriculae and its growing importance in applications ranging from optimization to molecular biology. An inaugural conference was held cooperatively by DIMATIA and DIMACS to focus on the versatility, width, and depth of current progress in the subject area. This volume offers a well-balanced blend of research and survey papers reflecting the exciting, attractive topics in contemporary discrete mathematics. Discussed in the book are topics such as graph theory, partially ordered sets, geometrical Ramsey theory, computational complexity issues and applications.

Download or read book Joan of Arc and Richard III written by Charles T. Wood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-01-03 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joan of Arc and Richard III loom large in the histories of their countries, but the myths surrounding them have always obscured just who they were and what they hoped to accomplish. In this book, medieval historian Charles Wood brings these fascinating figures to life through an original combination of traditional biography and wide-ranging discussion of the political and social world in which they lived. Wood draws on a range of unusual sources--from art and legal codes to chronicles and lives of saints--to present a new picture of medieval people and their concerns. Focusing on topics often neglected by other historians, he includes lively discussions of royal adultery scandals, child-kings and the problems they posed, and earlier people and crises that helped to shape the culture of sex and sainthood that was profoundly that of the Middle Ages. In so doing, he clarifies the historical contributions of Richard and Joan, and sheds new light on the political, social, and religious forces that shaped medieval government and made France and England such widely different countries.
Download or read book The Banach Tarski Paradox written by Grzegorz Tomkowicz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Banach–Tarski Paradox is a most striking mathematical construction: it asserts that a solid ball can be taken apart into finitely many pieces that can be rearranged using rigid motions to form a ball twice as large. This volume explores the consequences of the paradox for measure theory and its connections with group theory, geometry, set theory, and logic. This new edition of a classic book unifies contemporary research on the paradox. It has been updated with many new proofs and results, and discussions of the many problems that remain unsolved. Among the new results presented are several unusual paradoxes in the hyperbolic plane, one of which involves the shapes of Escher's famous 'Angel and Devils' woodcut. A new chapter is devoted to a complete proof of the remarkable result that the circle can be squared using set theory, a problem that had been open for over sixty years.
