Book excerpt: Archway Editions is the brand new imprint of powerHouse Books, and a literary complement to their trailblazing photography and illustrated publications, all distributed by Simon & Schuster. Our mission statement is "to publish the finest authors, at all stages of their careers, who write material which is at odds with the prevailing status quo, both legendary and emerging." We are genre-blind with a goal to publish unconventional books for the widest possible audience. This includes writers with long careers like Alice Notley, Ishmael Reed and Paul Schrader, but also young writers who need a place to show off their stuff and meet likeminded literati. Archways is the in-house reading series that takes place every few months at POWERHOUSE Arena, our bookstore in downtown Brooklyn across from the Manhattan Bridge archway. It's our home base and a place for authors to present incredible work out of the mainstream. Some we end up publishing (like Gabriel Kruis' instant classic Acid Virga, excerpted here), and each one is a vital new voice working at odds with a complacent and hidebound publishing industry. Every Archways features a limited edition zine of works read at the event. This anthology collects work from the first three readings, held in 2019 and 2020. Every event has a visual component, and we've shared some stills and photos from our incredible visual artists too. There's nothing quite like the high wire tension of a live reading - but this'll have to do for now. CONTRIBUTORS include: Rachel Allen, Phil Anderson, Brendan Burdzinski, Naomi Falk, Katie Foster, Andrew Gibeley, Ariel Francisco, Kelly Gallagher, Cyree Jarelle Johnson, Gabriel Kruis, Shayla Lawz, Etan Nechin, Kwame Opoku-Duku, Chunbum Park, Joseph Rathgeber, Nicolas Rys, Bud Smith, Andrea Stella, and Shy Watson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A presentation on the Tibetan Buddhist path to enlightenment, through the lens of an artist's eye and experience. The sacred arts play an essential, intrinsic role in Tibetan Buddhist practice. Here, one of the great practitioners and master artists of our time presents a guide to the Tibetan Buddhist path, from preliminary practices through enlightenment, from the artist's perspective. With profound wisdom, he shows how visual representations of the sacred in paintings, sculptures, mandalas, and stupas can be an essential support to practice throughout the path. This work, based on the author's landmark Tibetan text, The Path to Liberation, includes basic Buddhist teachings and practices, clearly pointing out the relevance of these for both the sacred artist and the practitioner, along with an overview of the history and iconography of Buddhist art.

Book Handbook of Medieval Culture Volume 1

This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 1223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A follow-up publication to the Handbook of Medieval Studies, this new reference work turns to a different focus: medieval culture. Medieval research has grown tremendously in depth and breadth over the last decades. Particularly our understanding of medieval culture, of the basic living conditions, and the specific value system prevalent at that time has considerably expanded, to a point where we are in danger of no longer seeing the proverbial forest for the trees. The present, innovative handbook offers compact articles on essential topics, ideals, specific knowledge, and concepts defining the medieval world as comprehensively as possible. The topics covered in this new handbook pertain to issues such as love and marriage, belief in God, hell, and the devil, education, lordship and servitude, Christianity versus Judaism and Islam, health, medicine, the rural world, the rise of the urban class, travel, roads and bridges, entertainment, games, and sport activities, numbers, measuring, the education system, the papacy, saints, the senses, death, and money.

Book Beijing Record

Download or read book Beijing Record written by Jun Wang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, the Chinese Xinhua News Agency journalist Wang Jun published the bestseller Beijing Record, the result of ten years of research on the urban transformation of Beijing in the last fifty years. Home to more than 15 million people, this ancient capital city — not surprisingly — has a controversial, complicated history of planning and politics, development and demolition. The publication raises a number of unsettling questions: Why has valuable historical architecture such as city ramparts, gateways, old temples, memorial archways and the urban fabric of the hutongs (traditional alleyways) and siheyuan (courtyard houses) been visibly disappearing for decades? Why are so many houses being demolished at a time of economic growth? Is no one prepared to stand up for the preservation of the city? For his research, Wang went through innumerable archives, read diaries and collected an unprecedented quantity of data, accessing first-hand materials and unearthing photographs that clearly document the city’s relentless, unprecedented physical makeover. In addition, he conducted more than 50 in-person interviews with officials, planners, scholars and other experts. Wang’s publication presents a survey of the main developments and government-level (both central and municipal) decisions, devoting a lot of attention to the 1950s and 1960s, when Beijing experienced a critical wave of transformative events. Shortly after its publication by SDX joint Publishing Company House in October 2003, Beijing Record ignited a firestorm of debate and discussion in a country where public interaction over such a sensitive subject rarely surfaces.

Book Race and Retail

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mia Bay
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2015-08-04
  • ISBN : 0813575354
  • Pages : 487 pages

Download or read book Race and Retail written by Mia Bay and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race has long shaped shopping experiences for many Americans. Retail exchanges and establishments have made headlines as flashpoints for conflict not only between blacks and whites, but also between whites, Mexicans, Asian Americans, and a wide variety of other ethnic groups, who have at times found themselves unwelcome at white-owned businesses. Race and Retail documents the extent to which retail establishments, both past and present, have often catered to specific ethnic and racial groups. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the original essays collected here explore selling and buying practices of nonwhite populations around the world and the barriers that shape these habits, such as racial discrimination, food deserts, and gentrification. The contributors highlight more contemporary issues by raising questions about how race informs business owners’ ideas about consumer demand, resulting in substandard quality and higher prices for minorities than in predominantly white neighborhoods. In a wide-ranging exploration of the subject, they also address revitalization and gentrification in South Korean and Latino neighborhoods in California, Arab and Turkish coffeehouses and hookah lounges in South Paterson, New Jersey, and tourist capoeira consumption in Brazil. Race and Retail illuminates the complex play of forces at work in racialized retail markets and the everyday impact of those forces on minority consumers. The essays demonstrate how past practice remains in force in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.

Book excerpt: Consorts of the Caliphs is a seventh/thirteenth-century compilation of anecdotes about thirty-eight women who were, as the title suggests, consorts to those in power, most of them concubines of the early Abbasid caliphs and wives of latter-day caliphs and sultans. This slim but illuminating volume is one of the few surviving texts by Ibn al-Saʿi (d. 674 H/1276 AD). Ibn al-Saʿi was a prolific Baghdadi scholar who chronicled the academic and political elites of his city, and whose career straddled the final years of the Abbasid dynasty and the period following the cataclysmic Mongol invasion of 656 H/1258 AD.
