Book excerpt: The allocation of frequency spectrum by the FCC for Ultra Wideband (UWB) communications in the 3.1-10.6 GHz has paved the path for very high data rate Gb/s wireless communications. Frequency synthesis in these communication systems involves great challenges such as high frequency and wideband operation in addition to stringent requirements on frequency hopping time and coexistence with other wireless standards. This research proposes frequency generation schemes for such radio systems and their integrated implementations in silicon based technologies. Special emphasis is placed on efficient frequency planning and other system level considerations for building compact and practical systems for carrier frequency generation in an integrated UWB radio. This work proposes a frequency band plan for multiband OFDM based UWB radios in the 3.1-10.6 GHz range. Based on this frequency plan, two 11-band frequency synthesizers are designed, implemented and tested making them one of the first frequency synthesizers for UWB covering 78% of the licensed spectrum. The circuits are implemented in 0.25[mu]m SiGe BiCMOS and the architectures are based on a single VCO at a fixed frequency followed by an array of dividers, multiplexers and single sideband (SSB) mixers to generate the 11 required bands in quadrature with fast hopping in much less than 9.5 ns. One of the synthesizers is integrated and tested as part of a 3-10 GHz packaged receiver. It draws 80 mA current from a 2.5 V supply and occupies an area of 2.25 mm2. Finally, an architecture for a UWB synthesizer is proposed that is based on a single multiband quadrature VCO, a programmable integer divider with 50% duty cycle and a single sideband mixer. A frequency band plan is proposed that greatly relaxes the tuning range requirement of the multiband VCO and leads to a very digitally intensive architecture for wideband frequency synthesis suitable for implementation in deep submicron CMOS processes. A design in 130nm CMOS occupies less than 1 mm2 while consuming 90 mW. This architecture provides an efficient solution in terms of area and power consumption with very low complexity.

Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to present the design and implementation of ultra-low power radio transceivers at microwave frequencies, which are applicable to wireless sensor network (WSN) and, in particular, to the requirement of the Speckled Computing Consortium (or SpeckNet). This was achieved through quasi-MMIC prototypes and monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) with dc power consumption of less than 1mW and radio communication ranges operating at least one metre. A wireless sensor network is made up of widely distributed autonomous devices incorporating sensors to cooperatively monitor physical environments. There are different kinds of sensor network applications in which sensors perform a wide range of activities. Among these, a certain set of applications require that sensor nodes collect information about the physical environment. Each sensor node operates autonomously without a central node of control. However, there are many implementation challenges associated with sensor nodes. These nodes must consume extremely low power and must communicate with their neighbours at bit-rates in the order of hundreds of kilobits per second and potentially need to operate at high volumetric densities. Since the power constraint is the most challenging requirement, the radio transceiver must consume ultra-low power in order to prolong the limited battery capacity of a node. The radio transceiver must also be compact, less than 5?5 mm2, to achieve a target size for sensor node and operate over a range of at least one metre to allow communication between widely deployed nodes. Different transceiver topologies are discussed to choose the radio transceiver architecture with specifications that are required in this project. The conventional heterodyne and homodyne topologies are discussed to be unsuitable methods to achieve low power transceiver due to power hungry circuits and their high complexity. The super-regenerative transceiver is also discussed to be unsuitable method because it has a drawback of inherent frequency instability and its characteristics strongly depend on the performance of the super-regenerative oscillator. Instead, a more efficient method of modulation and demodulation such as on-off keying (OOK) is presented. Furthermore, design considerations are shown which can be used to achieve relatively large output voltages for small input powers using an OOK modulation system. This is important because transceiver does not require the use of additional circuits to increase gain or sensitivity and consequently it achieves lower power consumption in a sensor node. This thesis details the circuit design with both a commercial and in-house device technology with ultra-low dc power consumption while retaining adequate RF performance. It details the design of radio building blocks including amplifiers, oscillators, switches and detectors. Furthermore, the circuit integration is presented to achieve a compact transceiver and different circuit topologies to minimize dc power consumption are described. To achieve the sensitivity requirements of receiver, a detector design method with large output voltage is presented. The receiver is measured to have output voltages of 1mVp-p for input powers of -60dBm over a 1 metre operating range while consuming as much as 420?W. The first prototype combines all required blocks using an in-house GaAs MMIC process with commercial pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (PHEMT). The OOK radio transceiver successfully operates at the centre frequency of 10GHz for compact antenna and with ultra-low power consumption and shows an output power of -10.4dBm for the transmitter, an output voltage of 1mVp-p at an operating range of 1 metre for the receiver and a total power consumption of 840?W. Based on this prototype, an MMIC radio transceiver at the 24GHz band is also designed to further improve the performance and reduce the physical size with an advanced 50nm gate-length GaAs metamorphic high electron mobility transistor (MHEMT) device technology.

At the heart of software radio is a programmable oscillator called a Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS). DDS has the capabilities of rapid frequency hopping by digital software control while operating at very high frequencies and having sub-hertz resolution. Nevertheless, the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and the read-only-memory (ROM) look-up table, building blocks of the DDS, prevent the DDS to be used in wireless communication because they introduce errors and noises to the DDS and their performances deteriorate at high speed. The DAC and ROM are replaced in this thesis by analog active filters that convert the square wave output of the phase accumulator directly into a sine wave. The proposed architecture operates with a reference clock of 9.09 GHz and can be fully-integrated in 90 nm CMOS technology.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in home healthcare, environmental sensing, and low power computing have created a need for wireless communication at very low power for low data rate applications. Due to higher energy/bit requirements at lower data -rate, achieving power levels low enough to enable long battery lifetime (~10 years) or power-harvesting supplies have not been possible with traditional approaches. Dutycycled radios have often been proposed in literature as a solution for such applications due to their ability to shut off the static power consumption at low data rates. While earlier radio nodes for such systems have been proposed based on a type of sleepwake scheduling, such implementations are still power hungry due to large synchronization uncertainty (~1[MICRO SIGN]s). In this dissertation, we utilize impulsive signaling and a pulse-coupled oscillator (PCO) based synchronization scheme to facilitate a globally synchronized wireless network. We have modeled this network over a widely varying parameter space and found that it is capable of reducing system cost as well as providing scalability in wireless sensor networks. Based on this scheme, we implemented an FCC compliant, 3-5GHz, timemultiplexed, dual-band UWB impulse radio transceiver, measured to consume only 20[MICRO SIGN]W when the nodes are synchronized for peer-peer communication. At the system level the design was measured to consume 86[MICRO SIGN]W of power, while facilitating multi- hop communication. Simple pulse-shaping circuitry ensures spectral efficiency, FCC compliance and ~30dB band-isolation. Similarly, the band-switchable, ~2ns turn-on receiver implements a non-coherent pulse detection scheme that facilitates low power consumption with -87dBm sensitivity at 100Kbps. Once synchronized the nodes exchange information while duty-cycling, and can use any type of high level network protocols utilized in packet based communication. For robust network performance, a localized synchronization detection scheme based on relative timing and statistics of the PCO firing and the timing pulses ("sync") is reported. No active hand-shaking is required for nodes to detect synchronization. A self-reinforcement scheme also helps maintain synchronization even in the presence of miss-detections. Finally we discuss unique ways to exploit properties of pulse coupled oscillator networks to realize novel low power event communication, prioritization, localization and immediate neighborhood validation for low power wireless sensor applications.
