It explores his career in the decorative arts by examining cultural context, material culture, biography, and patronage. Lockwood de Forest (1850-1932) is best known as an artistic decorator with a flair for designs based on the arts and crafts of the Middle East and India. He began his career in partnership with Louis Comfort Tiffany. By 1883, de Forest had his own business and successfully introduced the East Indian craft revival to the United States. His interior designs and furnishings were embraced by some of the wealthiest families of the Gilded Age. His family home at 7 East Tenth Street in New York City served as a designer showcase and was compared to Arab Hall, a pinnacle of exotic design that was part of Frederic, Lord Leighton's home and studio in Holland Park, London. Complemented by sixty color plates and 132 black-and-white illustrations." --Publisher description.

Book Collinson Lock

Download or read book Collinson Lock written by Clive Edwards and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian furnishers and decorators Collinson & Lock were a model of the art furniture business of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This book is the first wide-ranging study of this once highly important company. It will give insights into the workings and productions of a London furnishing business in the period. It also provides information on a wide variety of topics including furniture design developments, interior design styles, business practices, working practices and techniques, and the firm’s customers and competitors. Clive Edwards first considers the structure of the London ‘art furniture’ trade and its development to locate the firm in its community. He then traces the growth of the firm’s business, its involvement with important international exhibitions, the designers they worked with, and the furniture and interiors they produced. This important book then outlines and discusses Collinson & Lock’s creations ranging from seminal pieces that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed at national and international exhibitions between 1871 and 1900, through to batch produced objects that still maintained the quality and design that the firm was famous for. The involvement of the firm with both public and private interior decoration commissions is also examined through case studies, including those in the Anglo-Japanese, Queen Anne, Old English, and Renaissance styles used in the later Victorian period. Drawing on the author's extensive knowledge of nineteenth-century furniture and interiors, this book meets a need for a fully researched and illustrated reference work on this famous firm. If you have an interest in the history of furniture and interior design, if you are involved with furniture collections either on a private basis or professionally, or you simply have an interest in the decorative arts and culture of the period, this book should be on your shelves.

Book excerpt: "... a multivolume work of reference that gathers historical and contemporary texts critical to understanding both the past and future directions of interior design. The four volumes bring together essays and papers from Asia, Europe and North America, covering disciplinary origins in decoration and furnishing, through to recent enquiry into digital interactive spaces and virtual environments. The range of historical, theoretical and methodological approaches examines the social formation and spatial arrangements of interiors as they shift from the sensuous and emotive to the spatial politics of homogenized modernist terrain." -- Back cover.

Book The House Beautiful and Useful

Download or read book The House Beautiful and Useful written by H. Elder-Duncan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House Beautiful and Useful: Being Practical Suggestions on Furnishing and Decoration AT the Publishers' request, I have endeavoured to give in a fairly brief form some notes for the benefit of those who are faced with the problem of decorating 'and furnishing a home. There have been several works issued in recent years with a similar object in View; but their authors, as far as I can discover, have not kept in view the all-important ques tion of cost. To remedy this omission is one of the factors governing the appearance of the present volume. The ideal method of furnishing a home is to employ the services of a talented Architect and Craftsman, so that every piece of furniture and every scheme of decoration is an individual production - the only one of its kind - expressing the owner's taste and individuality. Unfortunately, such an ideal is only possible in the case of wealthy people. Nine-tenths of the population must continue to buy articles of furniture which are made to pattern by the dozen, and to employ schemes of decoration that have their counterpart in many other dwellings. It is the object of the following chapters to give some guidance to the selection of such furniture, and to indicate more or less desirable directions for decorative effort. While the majority of people cannot afford to employ an Architect or Craftsman, the person of average intellect and a certain amount of taste can do much for himself. Book Furnishing the Home of Good Taste a Brief Sketch of the Period Styles in Interio

Download or read book Furnishing the Home of Good Taste a Brief Sketch of the Period Styles in Interio written by Lucy Abbot Throop and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-06-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt and Greece The early history of art in all countries is naturally connected more closely with architecture than with decoration, for architecture had to be developed before the demand for decoration could come. But the two have much in common. Noble architecture calls for noble decoration. Decoration is one of the natural instincts of man, and from the earliest records of his existence we find him striving to give expression to it, we see it in the scratched pieces of bone and stone of the cave dwellers, in the designs of savage tribes, and in Druidical and Celtic remains, and in the great ruins of Yucatan. The meaning of these monuments may be lost to us, but we understand the spirit of trying to express the sense of beauty in the highest way possible, for it is the spirit which is still moving the world, and is the foundation of all worthy achievement. Egypt and Assyria stand out against the almost impenetrable curtain of pre-historic days in all the majesty of their so-called civilization. Huge, massive, aloof from the world, their temples and tombs and ruins remain. Research has given us the key to their religion, so we understand much of the meaning of their wall-paintings and the buildings themselves. The belief of the Egyptian that life was a short passage and his house a mere stopping-place on the way to the tomb, which was to be his permanent dwelling-place, explains the great care and labor spent on the pyramids, chapels, and rock sepulchers. They embalmed the dead for all eternity and put statues and images in the tombs to keep the mummy company. Colossal figures of their gods and goddesses guarded the tombs and temples, and still remain looking out over the desert with their strange, inscrutable Egyptian eyes. The people had technical skill which has never been surpassed, but the great size of the pyramids and temples and sphinxes gives one the feeling of despotism rather than civilization; of mass and permanency and the wonder of man's achievement rather than beauty, but they personify the mystery and power of ancient Egypt. The columns of the temples were massive, those of Karnak being seventy feet high, with capitals of lotus flowers and buds strictly conventionalized. The walls were covered with hieroglyphics and paintings. Perspective was never used, and figures were painted side view except for the eye and shoulder. In the tombs have been found many household belongings, beautiful gold and silver work, beside the offerings put there to appease the gods. Chairs have been found, which, humorous as it may sound, are certainly the ancestors of Empire chairs made thousands of years later. This is explained by the influence of Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, but there is something in common between the two times so far apart, of ambition and pride, of grandeur and colossal enterprise. Greece may well be called the Mother of Beauty, for with the Greeks came the dawn of a higher civilization, a striving for harmony of line and proportion, an ideal clear, high and persistent....

Book Furnishing the Republican Court

Download or read book Furnishing the Republican Court written by Amy Hudson Henderson and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the multiple ways in which late-eighteenth-century elite Americans employed the material culture of their homes as a performative system of visual communication about personal identity, social standing, reputation, and political affiliation. I focus on Philadelphia between 1790 and 1800 when the city served as the temporary seat of the new Federal government and housed what has become known as the "Republican Court"--The society revolving around the first two presidents, Congress, their families, and associates. Through an investigation of the material culture of this Republican Court, I demonstrate the competing values that shaped the founding generation and explore the many challenges these elite Americans faced in finding unity and consensus in their nascent republic. The four middle chapters in this dissertation engage different contexts or spaces of the Philadelphia town house and progress from a discussion of the architectural landscape itself and the market place in which architectural ornaments and household furnishings were acquired to the central entertaining spaces within those town houses--drawing and dining rooms--and their collections of furnishings. Through these various locales and materials, I address the role of objects and the built environment in elite identity formation, the rituals of gentility and civility, the performance of politeness and political sociability, and as visual modes of communication. The houses of elite families in the early republic emerge as material referents to people, places, and relationships beyond their physical walls as well as a visual language Americans manipulated to express not just their own sense of self but also their vision of their country's future. By furnishing the Republican Court, leading American families put on display both aristocratic and democratic leanings while simultaneously attempting to define republican virtue and simplicity for their generation. This study expands the discourse on eighteenth-century domestic architecture to encompass issues of gender and performance and to consider how men and women--together--built and inhabited their homes. In conceiving the house broadly both as a structure and as a container of artifacts, I return women to discussions of creativity and architectural design that are traditionally dominated by male craftsmen, master builders, and mostly male patrons. Moreover, in narrating how individuals gossiped about, as well as designed and decorated, their built environment, I show architecture's performative aspects and how houses in the Republican Court served simultaneously as a backdrop for nation building and as evidence of this negotiated process itself. These houses and their furnishings make visible the rhetoric of gentility, character, and republican virtue that underpinned the competing and often contradictory ideologies that informed America's earliest national political culture.
