Download or read book Rising to the Challenge in Los Angeles The Letters of Agnes Edwards Partin 1926 1956 written by Grace E. Moremen and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s a lot to like about this book; firstly, it’s a clear labor of love, and many people have worked to make it what it is. It also gives great and personal insight into Agnes, who was unmistakably way ahead of her time in terms of her thoughts and actions; and many of Agnes’s thoughts and still relevant today. Maybe even more so! ~ ScriptAcuity Studios, Dog Ear editors Some people are defined by their times, and others redefine them. Agnes Edwards Partin was among the latter. Through Agnes’s letters spanning the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, World War II, and beyond, readers will discover firsthand accounts of the changing face of Los Angeles, from its modest roots to its postwar expansion. During her years in California, Agnes stepped away from the home, defying the traditions of her day, to seek employment and education—ever eyeing her goal of earning a doctorate. Alongside her husband, Leo, whose ideas were as progressive as Agnes’s, the Partin family faced numerous challenges and heartbreaks during the changing eras, but also many joys and accomplishments. Rising to the Challenge in Los Angeles: The Letters of Agnes Edwards Partin, 1926–1956 is the chronicle of a woman far ahead of her time, standing up against the societal expectations of gender. Her views, her thoughts, and her lessons are still as relevant today as when they were written decades ago.
Download or read book The Concept of Political Culture written by Stephen Welch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '...erudite, thought-provoking and well-written.'Archie Brown, Professor of Politics, Oxford University. The return to prominence of the concept of political culture offers an opportunity to re-evaluate its contribution to the social sciences. This study casts a broader than usual net, embracing not only political science (with equal emphasis placed on the concept's use in communist studies), but also sociology and history. On this basis a distinctive theory of political culture, and not merely another typology, is developed. Political culture, instead of being a token in the sterile debate between interest- and culture-based explanation, offers the means of transcending that debate.

Download or read book Archie s Rivals in Teen Comics 1940s 1970s written by Michelle Nolan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-05-22 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to comprehensively examine the multitude of non-Archie teen humor comic books, including girls and boys such as Patsy Walker, Hedy Wolfe, Buzz Baxter and Wendy Parker from Marvel; Judy Foster, Buzzy, Binky and Scribbly from DC; Candy from Quality Comics; and Hap Hazard from Ace Comics. It covers, often for the first time, the history of the characters, who drew them, why (or why not) they succeeded as rivals for the Archie Series, highlights of both unusual and typical stories and much more. The author provides major plotlines and a history of the development of each series. Much has been written about the Archie characters, but until now very little has been told about most of their many comic book competitors.

Book excerpt: Descendants of Thomas William Holland and Milley Boyett compiles information from many sources None of the records in my book have been imported from online histories. All of them have been entered by me and most have been verified not once, but several times. When I entered names, dates and other information from book sources, I attempted to verify the data with census, vital records or another source. An Old Holland Family Record Book that was originally owned by Thomas William Holland is the "Key" that opened research for this book. Living relatives and fellow researchers provided me with priceless information that I supported by vital statistics, census records, deeds and wills.

Download or read book The Weems of Abbeville South Carolina written by Diana J. Muir and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least five different Weems men settled on Long Cane Creek in Abbeville County, South Carolina before the Revolutionary War. Even today there are Weems living in Abbeville County, both white and black. For years, genealogists have been confused about who is the son of whom, but land records make it clear that '4' men; Thomas (Eleanor) Weems, Redfearn Weems, Thomas (and Elizabeth) Weems, and Henry Weems all were granted land on Long Cane Creek. While the county lines have changed dramatically over the years, Long Cane Creek remained a constant. It was here that thousands of Weems descendants, both black and white, call home. Today, DNA evidence is slowly dividing the different Weems children into family groups. Included here, are the descendants of each of those identified children; regardless of who their parent(s) was. There is most certainly missing information, errors in dates and places, and misspellings. Feel free to scribble on your book and make your corrections, and additions.

Book excerpt: Ian Rankin is considered by many to be Scotland's greatest living crime fiction author. Most well known for his Inspector Rebus series--which has earned critical acclaim as well as scores of fans worldwide--Rankin is a prolific author whose other works include spy thrillers, nonfiction books and articles, short stories, novels, graphic novels, audio recordings, television/film, and plays. This companion--the first to provide a complete look at all of his writings--includes alphabetized entries on Rankin's works, characters, and themes; a biography; a chronology; maps of Rebus' Edinburgh; and an annotated bibliography. A champion of both Edinburgh and Scotland, Rankin continues to combine engaging entertainment with socio-political commentary showing Edinburgh as a microcosm of Scotland, and Scotland as a microcosm of the world. His writing investigates questions of Scottish identity, British history, masculinity, and contemporary culture while providing mystery readers with complex, suspenseful plots, realistic character development, and a unique mix of American hard-boiled and procedural styles with Scottish dialects and sensibilities.
