Book Running Through the Ages 2d ed

Download or read book Running Through the Ages 2d ed written by Edward S. Sears and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with prehumans running down prey, this book describes how ancient, medieval and modern runners have come to run ever faster. Writers of antiquity left few detailed accounts of running but in the early 1800s detailed accounts of running feats and matches appeared in newspapers, journals and books. Nineteenth century pioneers like George Seward, Harry Hutchens, Walter George and Bernie Wefers are here given long-deserved recognition. The six-day Go-as-You-Please races of the 1870s and 1880s--featuring running's first great female performer, Amy Howard--are discussed. Twentieth century luminaries Helen Stephens, Jesse Owens, Paavo Nurmi, Emil Zatopek, Bob Hayes, Abebe Bikila and Joan Benoit-Samuelson are included, along with the Bunion Derby races of 1928-1929. New material for this revised and expanded second edition includes coverage of the 1970s running boom, women marathon pioneers, the impact of drugs on running, and the feats of 21st century runners such as Usain Bolt, Paula Radcliffe and Haile Gebrselassie.

Book Hollywood s Melodramatic Imagination

Download or read book Hollywood s Melodramatic Imagination written by Geoff Mayer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melodrama is the foundation of American cinema. It is, however, a poorly understood term. While it is a pervasive and persuasive dramatic mode, it is not tied to any specific moral or ideological system. It is not a singular genre; rather, it operates as a "genre generating machine" capable of determining the aesthetics and structure of the drama within many genres. Melodrama centers the conflict around the clash between good and evil and provides a sense of poetic justice--but the specific values embedded in notions of good and evil are determined by the culture, and they shift from nation to nation, region to region, and period to period. This book explores the "populist" westerns of the 1930s, the propaganda films that followed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and the popularity of Sax Rohmer's master villain Fu Manchu. "Melodramas of passion" and film noir also offer a challenge to melodrama with its seemingly alienated protagonists and downbeat endings. Yet, with few exceptions, Hollywood was able to assimilate these genres within its melodramatic imagination.

Book Archie s Rivals in Teen Comics 1940s 1970s

Download or read book Archie s Rivals in Teen Comics 1940s 1970s written by Michelle Nolan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to comprehensively examine the multitude of non-Archie teen humor comic books, including girls and boys such as Patsy Walker, Hedy Wolfe, Buzz Baxter and Wendy Parker from Marvel; Judy Foster, Buzzy, Binky and Scribbly from DC; Candy from Quality Comics; and Hap Hazard from Ace Comics. It covers, often for the first time, the history of the characters, who drew them, why (or why not) they succeeded as rivals for the Archie Series, highlights of both unusual and typical stories and much more. The author provides major plotlines and a history of the development of each series. Much has been written about the Archie characters, but until now very little has been told about most of their many comic book competitors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays chronicling the Jewish history of Chicago, from the late nineteenth century to the end of World War II. The history of Jews in Chicago is a fascinating, complex, and largely unknown story. Thanks to the unstinting efforts of Walter Roth, much of this history has been preserved. Now, for the first time, this material has been distilled into a single volume, chronicling events and people from the late nineteenth century to the end of World War II. There are six broad themes, each of which includes several essays: the first of which is “Chicago Jews and the Secular City: Builders, Movers, Shakers” about HL Mettes’s huge 1924 history of Chicago Jews; financier Lazarus Silverman; the U of C Centennial; Jewish participation in the World’s Columbian Exposition; Julius Rosenwald and the Museum of Science & Industry and the Jewish Day Pageant at the Century of Progress in 1933. The other five themes are “Chicago Jews and Anti-Semitism: Tragedy Abroad, Challenges at Home”; “Chicago Jews and Zionism: Local Idealists”; “Chicago Jews and Zionism: Renowned Visitors”; “Chicago Jews and the Arts: The Page and the Stage” and “Chicago Jews on Both Sides of the Law: Colorful Characters.” Anyone interested in Chicago history, ethnic history, Jewish history, will find Looking Backward a fascinating and informative read. Praise for Looking Backward “Roth writes about the well known and the not so well known, bringing to life the people, events, and institutions that shaped the Jewish community.” —Booklist
