Book A Handbook of Churches and Councils

Download or read book A Handbook of Churches and Councils written by World Council of Churches and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has often been said-and rightly so-that the World Council of Churches (WCC) is first and foremost a fellowship of churches. This book is a vivid illustration of that reality. The descriptions, lists, statistical data, and other information presented in these pages give a striking picture of the extent and diversity of this fellowship. It encompasses a Christian population of some 590 million people, in close to 150 countries in all regions of the world, comprised of over 520,000 local congregations served by some 493,000 pastors and priests, as well as countless elders, teachers, members of parish councils, and others. A Handbook of Churches and Councils is not simply a handbook of the member churches of the WCC. At all levels-global, regional and sub-regional, national, and local-member churches of the WCC interact with other churches which, for various reasons, are not formally part of the Council's membership. By combining in one volume all the conciliar and confessional bodies and their membership, this book demonstrates concretely the reach of the ecumenical movement and also shows how much broader it is than the WCC alone. It serves to remind us that ownership of the movement rests not only with the WCC but with all the partners, and ultimately with God.

Book Historical Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago written by Rita Pemberton and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As separate entities and later a unified state, the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago boast very unique histories. Initially claimed by the Spanish in 1498, these territories were affected by the imperialist thrusts of various European nations including the French, British and Dutch. The mercantilist infiltrations of these groups, particularly in the 18th century, led to the islands’ belated development as sugar producers and, particularly Trinidad, as a cradle of migration. World War II and the development of the oil and tourism industries in the 20th century transformed the economies, culture and society of these islands. The country has been one of the most important in the region in relation to economic and political leadership and as a centre of cultural development. Historical Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 500 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Trinidad and Tobago.

Book Theological Education in Contemporary Africa

Download or read book Theological Education in Contemporary Africa written by Grant LeMarquand and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2004 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part One addresses 'Theological Foundations.' The five essays in this section deal with the Bible, Theology and Ecumenism. The subjects of theological methods, contextual hermeneutics, and appropriate curriculum are given special attention. Of course even foundational issues cannot be discussed in a vacuum and so each of the essays addresses these foundational subjects in the light of African realities. Part Two deals with 'Contemporary Issues.' It is particularly in this section that the traditional themes in African theology have been somewhat displaced by concerns which are today very pressing indeed. Three essays are devoted to the question of HIV/AIDS. This disease, which has devastated the African continent, demands a theological and practical response from those who claim to follow Jesus Christ. If the churches do not respond to this crisis with energy and determination we should not be surprised if the next generation wonders whether the Gospel has the power which we claim that it has. Two essays address the question of Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations in Africa. The resurgence of Islam in the world today is a concern of many. For those who believe in Jesus, this is a challenge which demands much wisdom and love. How should we respond to our Muslim neighbours? What are appropriate and thoughtful ways to share the love of Christ? Two further essays appear under the title of 'The Marginalized.' This could, of course, be a much large section. Those who suffer from AIDS could be included in this number, and one might have expected to see at least one essay on the place of women. In this volume, however, the 'disabled' and youth are highlighted. Both groups are clearly in need of the attention of the churches, and both groups are clearly misunderstood and neglected. The final section of Part Two contains essays, which focus attention on 'Theological Paedagogy.' All of the other contributions to this volume make suggestions and arguments about curriculum, resources, and issues of concern for theological educators. The causal aim of this book is that these essays may help us to reflect in an intentional way on the implications of contemporary realities for the future of theological education.

Book Global Perspectives on Catholic Religious Education in Schools

Download or read book Global Perspectives on Catholic Religious Education in Schools written by Michael T. Buchanan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers theoretical aspects of Catholic Religious Education in schools and examines them from multiple theoretical and contextual perspectives. It captures the contemporary academic and educational developments in the field of Religious Education while discussing in detail the challenges that Religious Educators face in different European, Asian, African, Australian, American and Latin American countries. The edited collection investigates how to pass on a Catholic heritage as a “living tradition” in diversely populated schools and communities. In this way it explores and asserts the proper identity of Catholic Religious Education in dialogue with Catechetics and with the wider discipline of Religious Education. As the different articles of this publication demonstrate - through a series of interesting and critical points of view - Catholic Religious Education is confronted with many challenges from the risk of marginalization to the confusion produced by a religious indifferentism leading to a strictly comparative or neutral method in the study of religions. It is essential to take into account in our research perspectives that Catholic Religious Education is not only a subject but also a mission in the light of the diakonia of truth in the midst of humanity H.E. Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, Prefect, Congregation for Catholic Education, Holy See, Vatican City Religious education teachers cannot by themselves overcome the ills of society, but religious education...can help to create better citizens of the world as some authors argue throughout this collection. could not ask more from such timely and provocative collection. It is a gift to the profession and to Catholic Religious Education. Prof. Gloria Durka, Fordham University, New York, NY, USA

Download or read book Optatam Totius written by Austin Flannery and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteen official documents—constitutions, decrees, and declarations—of the Second Vatican Council are now available from Liturgical Press in the most popular and widely used inclusive-language edition translated by Irish Dominican Austin Flannery (+October 21, 2008). As the worldwide Church continues to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Council (1962–65), there is a great need in college classrooms and parish faith formation groups—as well as for individuals—to again have access to these documents in contemporary English. As Flannery wrote in his introduction to the 1996 edition, “The translation of the texts of the Vatican documents in the present volume differs from that in the previous publication in two respects. It has been very considerably revised and, in place, corrected. It is also, to a very large extent, in inclusive language. “I say ‘to a very large extent,’ because we have used inclusive language in passages about men and women but not, however, in passages about God, except where the use of the masculine pronoun was easily avoidable.”

Many papers were presented at this conference covering the 50 years of AMECEA under three headings: Part I: "Deeper Evangelization. Part II: "Formation and Education." Book excerpt: The ecological vision of Orthodox Christianity portrays creation as God⿿s epiphany and the human person as a connecting link between creation and Creator. Christian love is manifest through "the right use of material things." With fresh wisdom and insight, Elizabeth Theokritoff draws on the Fathers, the liturgy, saints' lives, and modern sources to challenge both theologians and non-theologians to change the way they think. This is a compelling read.

Book Global Diasporas and Mission

Download or read book Global Diasporas and Mission written by Chandler H. Im and published by Wipf & Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The movement of people from their homelands is increasing exponentially. Such waves of both immigration and migration triggered by various factors have created new opportunities for the church and its mission. This volume explores such global diasporas from both ecclesiological and missiological perspectives. Its various case studies invite reconsideration of the missionary and evangelistic task of the church in response to contemporary global dynamics. The image of the dandelion on the front cover symbolizes diverse people groups dispersed around the globe, even as the Christian imagination views such dispersal as being carried by the winds of the Holy Spirit. For decades now, ethnic diasporas have played a critical role in spreading Christianity to new regions, while reshaping the faith in traditional centers of belief. It is extremely valuable, then, to have such an impressive and wide-ranging collection of essays on this epochal phenomenon. The book impresses by its truly global diversity of expertise, and the uniformly high quality of contributions. Indispensable. Dr. Philip Jenkins, Distinguished Professor of History, Institute for Studies of Religion, Baylor University This book makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of a complex global phenomenon. Written by leading thinkers in the burgeoning field of 'diaspora missiology', these essays offer collectively an informed and interdisciplinary view of the world through the lens of the global diasporas. The editors have achieved in this book a balance and breadth that suits the subject at hand and situates the reader for further study of this vital aspect of human flourishing in the twenty-first century. Dr. Michael Oh, Chief Executive Officer, The Lausanne Movement In an era of unprecedented global migratory flows, the extraordinary potential of migrant movement for missionary action has emerged as a fascinating and fruitful area of research and theological reflection. In Global Diasporas & Mission readers are presented with bold missiological assessments of the phenomenon by an impressive global cast of scholars whose approaches encompass the theological, biblical, and historical. This rich compendium of analyses and insights covers tremendous ground and showcases the multidisciplinary nature of the growing discourse on migration and mission. Dr. Jehu J. Hanciles, Associate Professor, Brooks Chair of World Christianity, Candler School of Theology, Emory University Chandler H. Im (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) is Director of Ethnic America Network and Director of Ethnic Ministries at the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College (Wheaton, Illinois, USA), and Adjunct Professor of Mission at Faith Evangelical Seminary (Tacoma, Washington, USA). Amos Yong is professor of Theology and Mission, and director of the Center for Missiological Research at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA.
