Book excerpt: "The primary objective of this project is to support the US Army Garrison Fort Wainwright with the excavation at the National Register Eligible sites 49-XMH-297, Delta River Overlook (DRO), and 49-XMH-838, Hurricane Bluff. This is in support of maintenance and erosion control activities at OP 9c under FW-MOA-1411. Funding was obtained through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This report serves as the final submittal under two Fort Wainwright Scopes of Work: 15-18, Mitigation for FW-MOA-1411 OP9c Maintenance and Erosion Control; and 16-15, Mitigation for FW-MOA-1411 Submittals IIB and IIC. This project is intended to provide more comprehensive information on the nature and significance of cultural materials at DRO. Excavations at DRO and tests at Hurricane Bluff conducted during the 2015 and 2017 field seasons have demonstrated the sites to be unique in Alaska for its repeated use by people over many millennia."--Page iii

Book Archaeology at Teklanika West HEA 001

Download or read book Archaeology at Teklanika West HEA 001 written by Samuel C. Coffman and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis research involved a reinvestigation of the Teklanika West (HEA-001) archaeological site, central Alaska. It focused on understanding and expanding upon the site formation processes, dating, and characterizing cultural components at the site. Analyses were designed to address the preceding research purposes, while inter-relating research objectives. Twelve and a quarter square meters were excavated within five blocks located across the site. These excavation blocks yielded dateable materials in clear association with chipped-stone technology. Both environmental and cultural data obtained at the site have produced a more complex understanding of the site and surrounding landscape. Multiple components ranging in age from the late Pleistocene through late Holocene are represented at the site. Lithic analyses indicate a wide variety of lithic reduction occurring within components; ranging from biface production to late-stage weapons maintenance. Faunal remains from the oldest components consisted of bison, while the mid-late Holocene components consisted of caribou and sheep, respectively. All these data indicate that the upper Teklanika River valley was deglaciated by the late Pleistocene, allowing humans access to animals, new travel routes, and raw material resources.

Book Archaeological Investigations at the Atigun Site Central Brooks Range Alaska

Download or read book Archaeological Investigations at the Atigun Site Central Brooks Range Alaska written by Ian R. Wilson and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 1978-01-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of the Atigun site based on work conducted in 1973 and 1974 on the North Slope of the Central Brooks Range, Alaska. The Atigun site is marginal to both Native and Inuit territory, thus the primary concern of this analysis is the cultural affiliation of its occupants. Conclusions point to late summer occupation of the site by Athapaskans between A.D. 1400 and A.D. 1800. This period is defined as the Kavik phase.

  • ISBN : 1623495393
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Dry Creek written by W. Roger Powers and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With cultural remains dated unequivocally to 13,000 calendar years ago, Dry Creek assumed major importance upon its excavation and study by W. Roger Powers. The site was the first to conclusively demonstrate a human presence that could be dated to the same time as the Bering Land Bridge. As Powers and his team studied the site, their work verified initial expectations. Unfortunately, the research was never fully published. Dry Creek: The Archaeology and Paleoecology of a Late Pleistocene Alaskan Hunting Camp is ready to take its rightful place in the ongoing research into the peopling of the Americas. Containing the original research, this book also updates and reconsiders Dry Creek in light of more recent discoveries and analysis.
