Book The Excavation of the Prehistoric Burial Tumulus at Lofkend Albania

Download or read book The Excavation of the Prehistoric Burial Tumulus at Lofkend Albania written by Lorenc Bejko and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 1178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The burial tumulus of Lofkend lies in one of the richest archaeological areas of Albania (ancient "Illyria"), home to a number of burial tumuli spanning the Bronze and Iron Ages of later prehistory. Some were robbed long ago, others were reused for modern burials; few were excavated under scientific conditions. Modern understanding of the pre- and protohistory of Illyria has largely been shaped by the contents of such burial mounds. What inspired the systematic exploration of Lofkend by UCLA was more than the promise of an unplundered necropolis; it was also a chance to revisit the significance of this tumulus and its fellows for the emergence of urbanism and complexity in ancient Illyria. In addition to artifacts, the recovery of surviving plant remains, bones, and other organic material contribute insights into the environmental and ecological history of the region.

Book Archaeological Investigations in a Northern Albanian Province Results of the Projekti Arkeologjik I Shkodr s PASH

Download or read book Archaeological Investigations in a Northern Albanian Province Results of the Projekti Arkeologjik I Shkodr s PASH written by Michael L. Galaty and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, very few northern Albanian archaeological sites have been surveyed and excavated. Situated beyond the reach, and allure, of the Classical Greek colonies of south-central Albania, the region has drawn less scholarly attention. But in various ways, northern Albania is just as important to the ongoing archaeological debates regarding the origins of inequality and the rise of social complexity. Some of the earliest and largest hill forts and tumuli (burial mounds) in Albania, dating to the Bronze and Iron Age, are located in Shkodër. Shkodër (Rozafa) Castle became the capital of the so-called Illyrian Kingdom, which was conquered by Rome in the early 3rd century BC. This research report, focused on the province of Shkodër, is based on five years of field and laboratory work and is the first synthetic archaeological treatment of this region. The results of the Projekti Arkeologjik i Shkodrës (or PASH) are presented here in two volumes. Volume 1 includes geological context, a literature review, historical background, and reports on the regional survey and test excavations at three settlements and three tumuli. In Volume 2, the authors describe the artifacts recovered through survey and excavation, including chipped stone, small finds, and pottery from the prehistoric, Classical, Roman, medieval, and post-medieval periods. They also present results of faunal, petrographic, chemical, carpological, and strontium isotope analyses of the artifacts. These two volumes place northern Albania--and the Shkodër Province in particular--at the forefront of archaeological research in the Balkans.

Book Historical Dictionary of Albania

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albania is not well known by outsiders; it was deliberately closed to the outside world during the communist era. Now it has thankfully become free again, its borders are open and it can be visited, and it is increasingly integrating with the rest of Europe and beyond. Unfortunately, Albania has had its share of problems in the post-communist era; it's a land of destitution and despair, thanks in part to the Albanian mafia, which has turned the country into one of blood-feuds, kalashnikovs, and eternal crises. Yet, Albania is, in essence, a European nation like any other ...

Book excerpt: The present volume endeavours to throw light on a corner of Europe which is often ignored by historians. The book is not a history of early Albania, but rather a collection of important historical documents and texts from the 11th to the 17th centuries, which will add to an understanding of the early history and development of Albania and its people. The vast majority of these works has never been published in English before. The first section of the book focusses on the emergence of the Albanians as a people and provides the reader with the earliest documents which make reference to them. The second, and main section of the volume provides a broader view of history and geography and, in particular, of life in Albania from the 12th to the 17th centuries. It relies primarily on the reports of travellers and chroniclers, many of whom offer fascinating, firsthand information on what they saw and experienced during their travels in the country.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together unpublished Italian and Albanian archaeological reports and new archaeological studies from recent fieldwork that throw new light on the archaeology and history of the Pavllas River Valley, the Mediterranean alluvial plain in the territory of Butrint, ancient Buthrotum, in southwestern Albania. It gives prominence for the first time to two important sites, Kalivo and Çuka e Aitoit, which are here reinterpreted and shown to have played major roles in the early history of Butrint as it evolved in the later first millennium BC to emerge as the key city of Chaonia in Epirus. Butrint 7 also presents the full excavation report of the Late Bronze Age and Hellenistic fortified site of Mursi, in addition to other Butrint Foundation surveys and excavations in the hinterland of Butrint, including the Roman villa maritima at Diaporit, the villa suburbana on the Vrina Plain, and Roman sites on Alinura Bay and at the Customs House, as well as new surveys of the early modern Triangular Fortress and a survey to locate the lost Venetian village of Zarópulo. The volume also features a new study of the Hellenistic bronze statuette of Pan found on Mount Mile and of his sanctuary at Butrint. The volume concludes with a comprehensive reassessment of the Pavllas River Valley in relation to Butrint, from the Palaeolithic to the modern eras, examining how dominion, territory, environment and the ‘corrupting sea’ reshaped Butrint and its fluvial corridor diachronically and particularly brought profound territorial, economic and social alterations under the Roman Empire.

Download or read book Greece and Albania written by Basil Kondis and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 1976 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following publication is an exact reprint of the 1976 first edition, originally published by the Institute for Balkan Studies in Thessaloniki, Greece. Since its publication this book has become a reference work for all students and scholars of Albanian History and Greek-Albanian relations. Being out of print and very difficult to find second hand, we had many requests from colleagues and younger students on where they could find and obtain the book. In 2007 the book was also translated and published in Albanian by Agim I. Tartari without the consent of the author. Subsequent unauthorized editions published in Tirana in 2020 by the Albanian Institute for International Studies have forced the author to make the book available again through printed and e -book editions . The 1976 first edition ends with the signing of the Protocol of Corfu on May 17, 1914, although there were many chapters left in the Greek-Albanian relations. B. Kondis had continued his research during the next two decades and expanded the timeline well into the 1920's with his extensive research on the Protocol of Kapestitsa and the subsequent recognition of the Albanian Independence in 1921. These issues have been addressed through many articles published during his tenure as Director and President of the Institute of Balkan Studies in Thessaloniki Greece. He has also written three books regarding Greek-Albanian relations, Greece and Albania in the 20th Century (published in 1996-1997 in Greek and Albanian editions), Venizelos and the Koritsa Question (published in 2018 in Greek) and a book about his grandfather bearing the same name, Vasil Kondis, who was a prominent personality working as a lawyer in Koritsa and involved in many of the events covered in the present book (published in 2022 in Greek) In August 2022 the second edition of this book was finally published adding more than sixty pages of new material including new articles and documents from the P.R.O. London and A.Y.E. Athens.. It is available from Amazon.com in Kindle, Paperback and Hardcover editions.
