Book excerpt: Born in Choubis Pargana in 1875, he belonged to a Bengali Brahmin family, who had later decided to follow the Christian faith, being disenchanted by the caste system as it prevailed then. His father, Babu Amarnath Ghosal was Secretary to the Municipality of Mirzapur, in the United Provinces and enjoyed a position of repute in society. He received his master's degree in English Literature from Allahabad University and was a gold medallist. His academic record was distinguished, as he later earned distinctions in the advanced specialised courses MRAS and FSA from London. Bipin Ghosal began his career as a professor of English in Bhopal. Later, he took charge of the King Edward Museum, Bhopal State. He was also the Chief Librarian of the prestigious Hamidiya Library. Since he was an archaeologist, he developed a special interest in the Sanchi Stupas, which later turned into a passion. Bipin Ghosal was also instrumental in drawing the attention of Sir John Marshall, Director General, Archaeological Survey of India towards the magnificent Sanchi Stupas, who later took up the restoration work of the monument in 1912. It would be worthy to note that Sanchi got a railway station only through his persistent requests to the British. In acknowledgement of his commitment, hard work, knowledge and documentation skills, he was later given the charge of the Sanchi Museum. Not only the British rulers, but many royal dignitaries from other countries and intellectual personalities of his time had high appreciation for his work on Sanchi. This book is truly a tribute to Sanchi.

INDIAN MUSEUM. ASOKA GALLERY. The first gallery of the archaeological section of the Museum is chiefly occupied with a portion of the railing, and one gateway of the Buddhist Stupa of Bharhut. They were removed from Bharhut to Calcutta, in order to save them from destruction by the ignorant peasantry who were in the habit of utilising the ruins of the Stupa as a quarry for building purposes. Some fragments of the pillars and coping, and a few crossbars of the quadrangular Buddhist railing of Buddha Gaya, have been built up as a restoration. The gallery also contains a series of fine casts of the friezes of the rock-cut temples of Orissa; and a few casts from the Sanchi Stupa. Gateway and Bailing of the Bharhut Stupa. The gateway of the Bharhut Stupa1 has been partially restored, and portions of two quadrants have been erected on either side of it in order to convey some idea of the nature of the structure. The gateway belonged to the eastern side of the Stupa, and it therefore now occupies the same relation to the quadrants as it did in the original building. A plan of the railing and Stupa hangs near the western wall, opposite the gateway. 1 Stupa is from a Sanskrit root meaning "to heap" or "to erect," and has been corrupted in English into "Tope." The term stupa is applicable " to any pile or mound, as to a funeral pile, hence it comes to be applied to a Tumulus erected over any of the sacred relics of Buddha, or on spots consecrated as the scenes of his acts."--Burgess and Fergusson's Cave Temples of India, p. 171.
