Book An Archaeological Evaluation of the Tidbits Site 35LIN100 Linn County Oregon

Download or read book An Archaeological Evaluation of the Tidbits Site 35LIN100 Linn County Oregon written by Rick Minor and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of archaeological testing, the Tidbits site in the Blue River drainage of the Western Cascades has been determined to be a temporary campsite occupied by aboriginal peoples during Middle Archaic times (4000 B.C. to A.D. 200). The archaeological remains recovered during the testing program suggest that hunting and maintenance or light manufacturing of chipped stone tools were the principal activities carried out by aboriginal peoples at this locality. The site was probably occupied by small groups or individuals because of its protected location on a ridge which is thought to have been along an aboriginal travel route. Although portions of the Tidbits site have been destroyed or disturbed by logging and road construction, a small area containing a high density of cultural materials remains relatively intact near the center of the site. Given the present state of our knowledge of archaeological remains in this upland region, it is apparent that archaeological study of the Tidbits site can contribute significant new information on the prehistory of the central Cascade Range.

Book The Sandal the Cave

Download or read book The Sandal the Cave written by Luther S. Cressman and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luther Cressman's 1938 discovery of a 9,000-year-old sandal in Fort Rock Cave revolutionized accepted theories of western prehistory. The recovery of the woven sagebrush-bark sandal, found buried under a layer of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Mazama, established a human presence in the Oregon Country much earlier than previously thought. Through six decades of scientific investigation, Cressman worked to uncover the history of the first Oregonians. In The Sandal and the Cave, he offers a brief, lucid introduction to the prehistory of Oregon Indians. Cressman describes their diverse cultures, highlighting similarities and differences between the peoples of various regions: the Oregon Coast, the Klamath Highland, the Northern Great Basin, and the Columbia Plateau. In a new introduction to Cressman's classic work, Dennis Jenkins provides a short biographical profile of the "father of Oregon archaeology" and discusses the importance of Cressman's excavation results and interpretations. Jenkins also offers a concise summary of recent archaeological research in the Northern Great Basin, bringing readers the most up-to-date information about the oldest known sites in Oregon.
