Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regardless of color or class, men in the Old South hunted; the meat, hides, and furs they brought home reinforced the hunters' claims to patriarchal authority as providers for their households. During the antebellum era, many white men also began using the hunt as a venue for the display of increasingly complex ideas about gender, race, class, and community. Proctor (history, Simpson College) explores the social drama of the hunt as it was conducted between 1800 and 1860, through accounts in books, letters, journals, and periodicals. He looks at the historical developments that shaped hunting as well as interactions between men and women and between owners and slaves. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Reinterpreting a silent History

Download or read book Reinterpreting a silent History written by Leslie Brett Kirchler and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Every year millions of tourists visit historic sites throughout the world. In the American South, these sites encompass diverse cultural landscapes, such as plantations. In many cases, visitors do not receive representative pictures of early lives. Rather, they encounter sanitized versions of the past that are acceptable to conventional views of slavery and that avoid conflict and expressions of deep emotion. Therefore, one of the primary goals of this research is to create a model for interpretative programs targeting plantation sites. Through an analysis of current programs and archival information, this model addresses the expressions of race, social class, and identity in the cultural landscape. ...This research on James Madison's Montpelier, George Washington's Mount Vernon, and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Poplar Forest attempts to remedy these shortcomings while providing a model to be used for the interpretative programming at plantations throughout the South...
