Book Iconic Eats of Wichita Surprising History People and Recipes

Download or read book Iconic Eats of Wichita Surprising History People and Recipes written by Joe Stumpe and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located a long way from any ports of call, Wichita is perhaps the last place where you'd expect to find a diverse culinary scene. From its early days as a rough-and-tumble cow town on the Chisholm Trail, the city first achieved dining sophistication through the efforts of the Thursday Afternoon Cooking Club, now the oldest such club in the United States. Steakhouses in the north end invented and popularized what some consider the city's signature dish: garlic salad. Waves of immigrants from three parts of the world--Mexico, Lebanon and Vietnam--stamped the dining habits of residents with dishes such as piratas, shawarma and Saigon Oriental Restaurant's famous No. 49. Author Joe Stumpe tells these stories and more while providing nearly two hundred prize recipes from restaurants and home cooks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A destination book filled with tales of intrigue and eccentricity . . . [about] a distinct strain of hot tamales born deep in the Mississippi Delta.” —Eat Y’all Several theories surround the traditional Delta tamale. Some trace it back to Mexican and Italian immigrants, while others say the Delta version of the hand-held meal is a spin on the old African American food called “cush.” One thing not disputed is the popularity. From hot tamale legends Joe Pope, Shine Thornton and the Scott family to current chefs, the traditions and the secret recipes live on. Writer and historian Anne Martin showcases the stories behind the traditional Delta hot tamale, as well as the countless variations of the delicacy found within the region. “Author Anne Martin explains in her new book about the Mississippi Delta’s own version of hot tamales and why they have remained a staple of Delta cuisine for generations . . . Even if you’ve never tasted ‘the Delta’s favorite food,’ Martin’s book will have you running for the nearest hot tamale stand.” —Today in Mississippi “Delta Hot Tamales: History, Stories & Recipes is not a traditional cookbook by any means. The book uses local food as a lens to explore the rich culture and history of an often misunderstood area in an often misunderstood state.” —Eat Y’all “Serves up a historical record and a thorough look at the current status of this distinctive culinary treat.” —Clarion Ledger

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Keto Cookbook is for those using the ketogenic diet to treat pediatric epilepsy and other neurologic conditions. Each of the 96 recipes for breakfast and brunch, appetizers and snacks, lunch, dinner, and sweets and treats, are compliant with the Keto Calculator and therefore ingredient portions are provided in grams. The ketogenic diet, which is very high in fats and low in carbohydrates, was first developed almost 80 years ago. It makes the body burn fat for energy instead of glucose. When carefully monitored by a medical team familiar with its use, the diet helps two out of three children who are tried on it and may prevent seizures completely in one out of three. It is a strict diet, and takes a strong commitment from the whole family. The ketogenic diet is not a do-it-yourself diet. It is a serious form of treatment that, like other therapies for epilepsy, has some side effects that have to be watched for. The book includes a 16-page color insert illustrating each recipe. Since many children start the Keto Diet before they speak, the pictures of the meal and snack options allow children to choose what they want, helping overcome food refusal due to lack of variety of foods and/or child's loss of control over food options. This book provides parents and children with options that have been tested and are kid- and Registered Dietitian- approved. Features of The Keto Cookbook include: 96 kid and dietitian tested and approved recipes for the keto diet presented in full color Recipes are coded by symbol to indicate personality type and cooking times Allergy information for the eight most common allergens Practical suggestions to help people "keto-proof" their life, from the kitchen, to the car, to the classroom. Four sample shopping lists and vacation guidelines will help families prepare for the unexpected Sample forms for the Transportation Safety Agency, School/Daycare Center, and Emergency Room/Primary Physician "

Their presence in Chicago began in 1834 and drastically increased during the 20th century as immigrants and their descendants sought work in the stockyards and other industries. Lithuanians in Chicago were dedicated to celebrating and preserving their unique culture, evident in its churches, schools, museums, and community centers in neighborhoods such as Bridgeport and Marquette Park. They also maintained ties to the homeland and played an important role in Lithuania's struggles for independence throughout the 20th century. Many prominent Lithuanian Americans are from the "City of the Big Shoulders," including football great Dick Butkus, actor John C. Reilly, and director Robert Zemeckis. The former president of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus, was a resident of Chicagoland for nearly 50 years.

Book Sanders Confectionery

  • Pages : 134 pages

Download or read book Sanders Confectionery written by Greg Tasker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 130 years, there has been no sweeter word in Detroit than Sanders. The venerable confectioner was once as much a part of Detroit's streetscape as the Big Three, Hudson's, and Coney Islands. Sanders was more than just an ice-cream and candy shop. A Detroit icon, it served a fountain of memories for generations. Detroiters stood two and three deep behind lunch counters for tuna or egg salad sandwiches, devil's food buttercream "bumpy" cake, hot fudge sundaes, and Sanders' signature dessert--hot fudge cream puffs. As Detroit boomed, so did Sanders. At its peak, the company boasted more than 50 stores, with its products available in as many as 200 supermarkets. The Sanders story began in Chicago, where Fred Sanders opened his first shop. A series of misfortunes prompted him to relocate to Detroit, where he began selling his confections on Woodward Avenue. Business grew steadily, and by the early 1900s, he had opened other shops along Woodward and elsewhere in Detroit. The Motor City nearly lost Sanders in the mid-1980s, but its desserts shops have begun resurfacing, thanks to another Detroit institution, Morley Brands LLC, which bought the Sanders brand.
