Book excerpt: On a business trip to Tunisia, Preising, a leading Swiss industrialist, is invited to spend the week with the daughter of a local gangster. He accompanies her to the wedding of two London city traders at a desert luxury resort that was once the site of an old Berber oasis. With the wedding party in full swing and the bride riding up the aisle on a camel, no one is aware that the global financial system stands on the brink of collapse. As the wedding guests nurse their hangovers, they learn that the British pound has depreciated tenfold, and their world begins to crumble around them. So begins Barbarian Spring, the debut novel from Jonas Lüscher, a major emerging voice in European fiction. The timely and unusual novel centers on a culture clash between high finance and the value system of the Maghreb. Provocative and entertaining, Barbarian Spring is a refreshingly original and all-too-believable satire for our times.

Book Dialogue Interpreting

Download or read book Dialogue Interpreting written by Ian Mason and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialogue interpreting includes what is variously referred to in English as Community, Public Service, Liaison, Ad Hoc or Bilateral Interpreting - the defining characteristic being interpreter-mediated communication in spontaneous face-to-face interaction. Included under this heading are all kinds of professional encounters: police, immigration and welfare services interviews, doctor-patient interviews, business negotiations, political interviews, lawyer-client and courtroom interpreting and so on. Whereas research into conference interpreting is now well established, the investigation of dialogue interpreting as a professional activity is still in its infancy, despite some highly promising publications in recent years. This special issue of The Translator, guest-edited by one of the leading scholars in translation studies, provides a forum for bringing together separate strands within this developing field and should create an impetus for further research. Viewing the interpreter as a gatekeeper, coordinator and negotiator of meanings within a three-way interaction, the descriptive studies included in this volume focus on issues such as role-conflict, in-group loyalties, participation status, relevance and the negotiation of face, thus linking the observation of interpreting practice to pragmatic constraints such as power, distance and face-threat and to semiotic constraints such as genres and discourses as socio-textual practices of particular cultural communities.

Book Work based Mobile Learning

Download or read book Work based Mobile Learning written by Norbert Pachler and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2011 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing use of mobile devices in work contexts has the potential to alter our work and learning practices. This is particularly true for knowledge workers. In addressing the implications of this transformation the book offers a multi-faceted collection of different concepts and cases of mobile learning in work environments from international contexts. The contributions are centred on the question of how individual users and organisations can harness mobile devices for learning and education. The range of examples presented in this book demonstrates that mobile devices foster situated approaches to learning in and across work contexts. The book is targeted at both practitioners - trainers or managers in charge of in-company training - and researchers, who are interested in designing, implementing or evaluating work-based mobile learning.

Book The Weimar Republic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Detlev Peukert
  • Publisher : Macmillan
  • Release : 1993-09
  • ISBN : 9780809015566
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book The Weimar Republic written by Detlev Peukert and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 1993-09 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About half of Kolb's compact book is devoted to a "Historical Survey," chronologically divided at the conventional watersheds of 1923-24 and 1929-30. A briefer second part, a historiographical essay in seven topical chapters, is followed by a seven-page chronology, a 676-item classified and topical bibliography, and an index. The bibliography, updated to February 1987, includes some English-language titles not in the original German edition, and is a list of tremendous value. Frequent references to individual entries (as well as to some works not found there) tie the bibliography to the historiographical essay, which is characterized by fair and judicious appraisal of interpretations of the period, even when Kolb clearly disagrees. There is a chapter on the revolution of 1918 and its aftermath in the first section, and one on art and mass culture in the second; each section of the survey also has one chapter focusing on foreign policy, and one on domestic developments.

Book German Professions 1800 1950

Download or read book German Professions 1800 1950 written by Geoffrey Cocks and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1990-05-10 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of the middle class in national development has always been of interest to historians concerned with the "peculiarities" of German history. Recently, the professional sector of the German middle class has come under historical scrutiny as part of a re-examination of those features of German society common to Western industrializing nations. This work provides comprehensive coverage of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Germany from the point of view of this new field. The contributors discuss the formation and development of such diverse professions as law, medicine, teaching, engineering, social work, and psychology, as well as the special cases of the bureaucracy and the military. They examine such questions as the role of the state in the creation and regulation of professions, the social and political role of various professional groups during the turbulent Weimar and Nazi periods, and the remarkable and troubling institutional continuity of certain professions through the Third Reich and into the postwar republics.
