Book The Colonist in Australia Or the Adventures of Godfrey Arabin Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonist in Australia, or the Adventures of Godfrey Arabin Godfrefarabin was the third son of a respectable trader in a county-town in England. At the early age of eight he was sent to the care of a relative in the south of Scotland, and went to a school of repute in the neighbourhood of his relation's dwelling. He attended the school regularly his relation was a batchelor, and he was allowed to follow the bent of his wild fancy. H 9 mixed with the country-people, and acquired much information - for, as a people, the Scotch stand pre-eminent for intellectual ability, and manv of the lower orders are passionately attached to the literature of their country. The country-people are rather fond of ficti tious and speculative literature, and the schoolboy would often spend the winter evenings with some one who would talk over the adventures of Ivanhoe. When he did not meet with agreeable company, he used to wander among the mountains, thinking on the warriors and people of the Iong-forgotten past, until he would inspire the dull land scape with imaginary beings. He stood in fancy at the head of an array of warriors, while on the opposite side was the enemy's camp. He unsheathed his sword, gave his war-cry, and led to the attack, - the opposing forces are scattered as chaff before the wind. He remembered, when with his mother he went to view one of England's old cathedrals, and gazing with astonishment upon the tombs of the Crusaders, his impression of that strange order was vague and mazy, something like that we might derive from the description of Coeur de Lion, Ivanhoe, and Conrad of Monserrat, in the novel of Ivanhoe. He would bro at over the battles and seiges of the Crusades until his man throbbed and his cheek flushed. He was often overp; owed by an intense melancholy, which he however kept cog' mia, yet at times the most trifling incidents would chill V He commonly took refuge in pious exercises. Book The Cambridge Companion to Australian Literature

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Australian Literature written by Elizabeth Webby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-08-21 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces in a lively and succinct way the major writers, literary movements, styles and genres that, at the beginning of a new century, are seen as constituting the field of 'Australian literature'. The book consciously takes a perspective that sees literary works not as aesthetic objects created in isolation by unique individuals, but as cultural products influenced and constrained by the social, political and economic circumstances of their times, as well as by geographical and environmental factors. It covers indigenous texts, colonial writing and reading, poetry, fiction and theatre throughout two centuries, biography and autobiography, and literary criticism in Australia. Other features of the companion are a chronology listing significant historical and literary events, and suggestions for further reading.

Book The Road to Batemans Bay

Download or read book The Road to Batemans Bay written by Alastair Greig and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Road to Batemans Bay is the story of competing ventures to create ‘the Great Southern Township’ on the South Coast of New South Wales in the early 1840s. The idea of developing the furthest reaches of settlement was linked to the hopes of southern woolgrowers for a road from their properties to the coast, over the Great Dividing Range. The township proponents dreamed that having a quicker and cheaper connection to Sydney would allow them to open a port second only to Port Jackson. The scene begins with the proposed coastal township of St Vincent, in an age of optimism: settlement is expanding, exports are growing and land prices are soaring, generating Australia’s first land boom. Before long, however, the colony experiences a catastrophic economic depression whose ‘pestilential breath’ infects those with a stake in the coastal townships. Alastair Greig follows the fate of these individuals, while also speculating on the broader fate of South Coast development during the mid-nineteenth century. Greig gives a unique insight into many aspects of colonial life—including the worlds of Sydney’s merchants, auctioneers, land speculators, surveyors, map-makers and lawyers—as well as its maritime challenges. The Road to Batemans Bay is a chronicle of how Australia first developed its land-gambling habit and how land speculation led to the road to ruin.
