Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arabic Authors: A Manual of Arabian History and Literature The following pages contain nothing new and nothing original, but they contain a good deal of information gathered from various sources, and brought together under one cover. The book itself may be useful, not, perhaps, to the Professor or to the Orientalist, but to the general reader, and to the student commencing the study of Arabic. To the latter it will give some idea of the vast field of Arabian literature that lies before him, and prepare him, perhaps, for working out a really interesting work upon the subject. Such still remains to be written in the English language, and it is to be hoped that it will be done some day thoroughly and well. It is gratifying to think that the study of Oriental languages and literature is progressing in Europe generally, if not in England particularly. The last Oriental Congress, held at Stockholm and Christiania the beginning of September, 1889, brought together a goodly number of Oriental scholars. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compilation of the history of Islamic authors and writings, A Literary History of the Arabs is considered one of the best explanations of Arabic culture and literature today. R.A. Nicholson explains in the book's preface that Islamic literature contains within it references to figureheads and cultural understandings that would stump all English readers unaware of Arabic history and beliefs. Nicholson outlines within all the necessary information to begin understanding English translations of Arabic works. Written for students, the political, intellectual, and religious notions presented are useful for any modern study of Arabic literature.REYNOLD ALLEYNE NICHOLSON (1868-1945) was an English scholar of Islamic literature and mysticism. Born in Yorkshire, England, Nicholson attended Aberdeen University and the University of Cambridge for Arabic studies. He taught Persian language and Arabic culture at Cambridge and was considered a leading scholar in Islamic studies. Not only did Nicholson translate major texts from various Arabic languages, he also wrote two widely-regarded books on Islam: A Literary History of The Arabs and The Mystics of Islam. In addition, Nicholson produced the first English translation and commentary of Rumi's Masnavi, an impressive and respected fete.

Book A Brief History of Arabic Literature

  • Author : George Nicolas El-hage, Ph.d.
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2017-10-08

Download or read book A Brief History of Arabic Literature written by George Nicolas El-hage, Ph.d. and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-08 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Middle Ages, the Arabs ruled the civilized world. They succeeded in conquering Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Mesopotamia and Africa, parts of China, Spain, Sicily, Portugal, Turkey, Persia, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. Had they not been stopped by Charles Martel at the famous and decisive battle of Tours-Poitiers in 732 A.D., the Arab conquest of the West would have spread into France and beyond and, consequently, would have changed the face of Europe and perhaps even shaped the modern world altogether. This book, in two carefully selected volumes, is intended to be a short history of Arabic literature. It provides the teacher with a quick summary and gives the beginning student a broad overview in chronological sequence of the historical and literary accomplishments of the Arab people from pre-Islamic times up to the Modern Era. Volume One covers the period from pre-Islamic Arabia to the end of the 'Abbaasid Era. Volume Two covers the period from the Arabs' occupation of Spain to the Modern Era. Of course, there already exist many excellent books that deal with this subject matter; however, the uniqueness and usefulness of this book (which is also presented to the curious and casual reader of Middle Eastern literature, especially if he is able to also read Arabic) lies in the fact that it not only provides interesting and didactic reading material, but it also has the following features that other similar books do not have: 1. The scope and timeline are so broad and comprehensive and spans the period from 500 A.D. - 1984 A.D., all between the covers of one book in two volumes. 2. The generous number of samples of poetry and prose selections from every poet or author mentioned in this book is included here in these two volumes in the original Arabic to illustrate the text and support the discussion on every poet and writer. Hence, the student of Arabic does not have to go searching for poetry or prose examples in order to understand or support an argument. In this way, he can immediately learn to appreciate a particular poet's poetry or writing.
