Book Arab Industrial Integration RLE Economy of Middle East

Download or read book Arab Industrial Integration RLE Economy of Middle East written by Elias T. Ghantus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab countries are increasingly recognising their importance as a regional economic grouping. Given the highly skewed distribution of natural, human and financial resources, the course of economic development in the Arab countries seems to be interrelated. Through pooling their resources and markets these countries will not only be able to optimise investment decisions but also broaden the potential for development. This book argues that economic integration is not merely a question of reducing or eliminating discriminatory measures, as emphasised in previous integration attempts. It calls rather for a positive action based on a regional investment strategy which coordinates production programmes, to reap the benefits of specialisation and scale. The book focuses on past industrialisation efforts in the Arab countries and examines the emerging patterns of industrial growth. A pioneering attempt is made to identify specific industries whose economic viability can be enhanced by conceiving them on a regional basis. The book concludes by framing a strategy for an integrated industrial development in the Arab region. First published in 1982.

Book excerpt: In this book, scholars, journalists, and officials of Arab, pan-Arab, and non-Arab institutions afford insights into the problems of Arab economic development and integration. The contributors, who met on the occasion of the 11th Arab Summit (also known as the First Arab Economic Summit), demonstrate that Arab economic integration is the best means by which individual Arab countries can achieve economic development. Their study of the integration process, the obstacles encountered, and the results achieved, in addition to being of interest to anyone concerned with the Arab world, is of particular relevance to those studying economic development in the Third World and South-South or North-South relations.

Book Assessing Arab Economic Integration

Download or read book Assessing Arab Economic Integration written by United Nations Publications and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this first edition of the Assessing Arab Economic Integration Report is to provide a quantitative assessment of regional economic integration efforts, and generate practical and implementable policy advice for Member States. Following a concise review of the potential impact and channels of economic integration, a system of indexes has been developed for performance evaluation, monitoring and comparison of integration at the global, regional, and bilateral levels. This report shows that Arab countries abilities to unlock the potential for further intra-regional integration rely partly on their capacity to address a number of cross cutting structural features that act as facilitators and condition their performances. It makes a clear argument that economic integration is a means by which Arab countries can ensure their growth and diversification, thus bringing both individual country-level and communal regional-level benefits.

Book Maghreb Regional and Global Integration

Download or read book Maghreb Regional and Global Integration written by Gary Clyde Hufbauer and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing terrorist activity has led the Maghreb countries—Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Libya—to focus on antiterrorism efforts, unintentionally at the expense of full-fledged economic reform. These countries have tightened their border restrictions on the flow of people and goods, reducing commerce and depressing economic activity. In fact, Maghreb has one of the lowest rates of intra-regional trade in the world; other factors like rigid economic structures, slow productivity growth, and modest investment levels continue to stymie progress toward economic integration. Do these countries' diverse circumstances symbolize insurmountable obstacles in achieving economic cooperation and an improved standard of living for citizens? How can the United States and European Union facilitate economic progress? Maghreb Regional and Global Integration: A Dream to Be Fulfilled utilizes two distinct econometric tools to assess four key sectors—energy, banking and insurance, transport, and agribusiness—and outlines achievable sector-specific recommendations. This book not only assesses the gains from economic integration among the Maghreb countries, but also focuses on the tangible benefits from enhanced economic ties between the region and the world economy. With this critical analysis, the authors provide an in-depth look at practical measures such as bilateral trade and investment agreements, regional arrangements, and financial assistance that can significantly boost short-term success and ensure long-term gains through integration in an unstable region.
