Book Spitz and Fisher s Medicolegal Investigation of Death

Download or read book Spitz and Fisher s Medicolegal Investigation of Death written by Werner U. Spitz and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2020-07-20 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not just a new edition but a different book, emphasizing trauma and wound analysis. The addition of a new co-editor, Dr. Francisco J. Diaz, has brought new ideas to this fifth edition. A chapter by Doctor Jan Leetsma, world-renowned neuropathologist, has also been included. Doctor Leetsma’s vast experience in forensic neuropathology will certainly enhance this book. Several chapters have been eliminated that are no longer applicable or which are adequately covered in other publications. Over time, in the past 48 years, since this book was first published, Medicolegal Investigation of Death has been dubbed the “Bible of Forensic Pathology.” The fifth edition includes over 600 case reports and hundreds of color photographs. The cases are from files the authors have personally handled. According to author Spitz, “We have found many times analysis of small wounds will lead to understanding of a giant case—like the case in Hawaii, where a body was found under a full-size van, with a thread mark on the cheek consistent with having been hit with a black pipe used for gas lines that were found in a bucket in the rear of the van. As it turned out, this was a murder, not an accident.” The book is full of such cases. This book will help you understand the details of injuries and how a person was injured and how they died and how these injuries, perhaps at first blush possibly seemingly insignificant, can shed new light on a case. Medicolegal Investigation of Death now embraces not just basic forensic pathology but also includes death during restraint, conscious pain and suffering and new concepts related to the interpretation of injuries by detailed wound analysis. The continued use of simple, non-technical terminology makes this book a truly unique treatise and source of information.

Book Forensic Diatomology and Drowning

Download or read book Forensic Diatomology and Drowning written by Michael S. Pollanen and published by Elsevier Science Health Science Division. This book was released on 1998 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The postmortem analysis of drowning is a classical problem in the pathology of sudden violent death. From a historical perspective, one of the most important issues in the study of drowning has been the search for a sensitive, specific, and easily applicable test for this cause of death. On this basis, the diatom test has emerged as the foremost laboratory procedure for the detection of drowning. Although the history of the diatom test spans a century, no comprehensive monograph has been published to address the scientific and medicolegal basis of the diatom test. This book is an attempt to fill this void in the English-language literature. The motivation and axiom for the diatom test are discussed in chapter 1 which outlines the types of circumstances bodies may be recovered from water. In chapter 2, drowning is considered in the broader context of rapid anoxial death and the postmortem findings of drowning is discussed. The medicolegal value and historical development of the diatom test are reviewed in chapter 3, which prepares the foundation for discussion of research on diatoms and drowning using femoral bone marrow (chapter 4). Chapter 4, the utility and validity of the diatom test is analyzed on a quantitative basis. Chapter 5 describes the laboratory procedures for extraction of diatoms from human tissues and presents guidelines for interpreting the diatom test in forensic casework. The various investigative applications of the diatom test are presented in chapter 6, with specific reference to the role of the diatom test in homicidal drowning. The final chapter, which forms a photomicrophic atlas of freshwater diatoms, will serve to guide forensic practitioners who are interested in performing forensic diatom analysis. The text is followed by a selected bibliography which includes references that may not have been cited in the main text.
