Book Aqua culture

Download or read book Aqua culture written by Sven Genschick and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pangasius" is a genus of shark catfishes native to Asia. The term is often used to refer to the commercially important Pangasius bocourti, or basa fish. In Vietnam, water pollution in Pangasius aquaculture endangers its economic success and meaning for rural development in the Mekong Delta. With the help of Bourdieu's theory of practice, this book considers the interplay of subjective and objective structures on the practices in Pangasius cultivation. It shows that economic dependencies in a global commodity production system have led to a transformation process that most aquaculturists cannot cope with. The discrepancy between the ideal and real situation can no longer be ignored otherwise the downward trend will continue. (Series: ZEF Development Studies - Vol. 26)

Book excerpt: Papers in this book discuss the emphasis on tilapia, modelling of pond aquaculture, exploratory and confirmatory methods for multivariate analysis, the relationships between multiple regression and analysis of variance and the rationale for sharing and analyzing "old", public domain data, all with emphasis on tropical/subtropical aquaculture systems.

Book Demographic Change in Coastal Fishing Communities and Its Implications for the Coastal Environment

Download or read book Demographic Change in Coastal Fishing Communities and Its Implications for the Coastal Environment written by Uwe Tietze and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increase in the number of fishers as a result of population growth and migration to coastal fishing communities can be a contributing factor in the overexploitation of fisheries resources and the deterioration of the coastal envrionment. The findings of the development dynamics of rural fishing communities "suggest that contrary to the assumed global trend, the number of coastal fishers has started to decline or stagnate in recent years in some developing countries. The findings further suggest that artisanal fisheries no longer are a "last resort employment" for people in some coastal areas.

Book Echinoderm Aquaculture

Download or read book Echinoderm Aquaculture written by Nicholas Brown and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea urchins and sea cucumbers are highly sought after delicacies growing in popularity globally. The demand for these species is rapidly outpacing natural stocks, and researchers and seafood industry personnel are now looking towards aquaculture as a means of providing a sustainable supply of these organism. Echinoderm Aquaculture is a practical reference on the basic biology and current culture practices for a wide range of geographically diverse echinoderm species. Echinoderm Aquaculture begins by examining the basic ecology and biology of sea urchins and sea cucumbers as well as the breadth of uses of these organisms as a source of food and bioactive compound. Subsequent chapters delineate the specific species of interest invarious geographic regions from around the world. Together, chapters provide a comprehensive coverage of culture practices. Echinoderm Aquaculture is a practical reference for researchers and industry personnel, and will serve as an invaluable resource to this rapidly growing segment of the aquaculture industry.

Book Aquaculture of the United States

Download or read book Aquaculture of the United States written by Robert R. Stickney and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996-01-12 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquaculture in the United States is a significant agribusiness industry, but it is also a troubled one whose future is clouded by doubt. Many aquaculture practices, such as deliberately introducing exotic species, hatcheries programs, and pen culture in protected waters have come under intense attack from environmentalists. Economic pressures on the industry from the value of coastal land, the unavailability of suitable supplies of water, and the legal costs of regulations have restricted growth. This book looks at the past, present and future of a troubled industry.

Book excerpt: Providing a broad and readable overview of the subject, this updated fourth edition of Aquaculture: An Introductory Text covers issues associated with sustainable aquaculture development, culture systems, hatchery methods, nutrition and feeding of aquaculture species, reproductive strategies, harvesting, and many other topics. While its main focus is on the culture of fish, molluscs and crustaceans for food, the book also covers other forms of aquaculture, such as the production of seaweeds, recreational fish and ornamental species, as well as live foods, such as algae and rotifers that are used to feed larval shrimp and marine fish. Aquaculture remains one of the most rapidly growing agricultural disciplines, and this book remains an essential resource for all students of aquaculture and related disciplines.

Book Pond Aquaculture Water Quality Management

Download or read book Pond Aquaculture Water Quality Management written by Claude E. Boyd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The efficient and profitable production of fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic organisms in aquaculture depends on a suitable environment in which they can reproduce and grow. Because those organisms live in water, the major environ mental concern within the culture system is water quality. Water supplies for aquaculture systems may naturally be oflow quality or polluted by human activity, but in most instances, the primary reason for water quality impairment is the culture activity itself. Manures, fertilizers, and feeds applied to ponds to enhance production only can be partially converted to animal biomass. Thus, at moderate and high production levels, the inputs of nutrients and organic matter to culture units may exceed the assimilative capacity of the ecosystems. The result is deteriorating water quality which stresses the culture species, and stress leads to poor growth, greater incidence of disease, increased mortality, and low produc tion. Effluents from aquaculture systems can cause pollution of receiving waters, and pollution entering ponds in source water or chemicals added to ponds for management purposes can contaminate aquacultural products. Thus, water quality in aquaculture extends into the arenas of environmental protection and food quality and safety. A considerable body of literature on water quality management in aquaculture has been accumulated over the past 50 years. The first attempt to compile this information was a small book entitled Water Quality in Warmwater Fish Ponds (Boyd I 979a).
