Download or read book Geographic Information Systems Remote Sensing and Mapping for the Development and Management of Marine Aquaculture written by James M. Kapetsky and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this document is to illustrate the ways in which Geographical Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and mapping can play a role in the development and management of marine aquaculture. The perspective is global. The approach is to employ example applications that have been aimed at resolving many of the important issues in marine aquaculture. The underlying purpose is to stimulate the interest of individuals in the government, industry and educational sectors of marine aquaculture to make more effective use of these tools. A brief introduction to spatial tools and their use in the marine fisheries sector precedes the example applications. The most recent applications have been selected to be indicative of the state of the art, allowing readers to make their own assessments of the benefits and limitations of use of these tools in their own disciplines. Also published in Chinese and Spanish.

Download or read book Preliminary Analysis of Coastal Marine Resource Use and the Development of Open Ocean Aquaculture in the Bay of Fundy written by B. D. Chang and published by St. Andrew's, N.B. : Fisheries and Oceans Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Brunswick finfish aquaculture industry is concentrated in the southwestern portion of the province, in the lower Bay of Fundy. Within this area there are few nearshore locations remaining for new aquaculture operations. Open ocean (offshore or exposed) aquaculture may be the only option to allow expansion of the finfish aquaculture industry. In order to assist both the aquaculture industry and coastal zone managers, we conducted a preliminary analysis of coastal zone management issues related to the feasibility of open ocean farms in the Bay of Fundy. We gathered existing geo-referenced information on oceanographic conditions, salmon aquaculture, commercial fisheries, species at risk, ecologically sensitive areas, shipping, and other activities. The information was gathered from scientific publications, other publications, websites, and interviews with government employees. For some important activities, such as the lobster fishery, and some species at risk, such as the endangered inner Bay of Fundy wild salmon, there is very little geo-referenced data available on the locations of essential areas. The preliminary analysis indicates that, while some degree of conflict may occur over much of the Bay of Fundy, there may be some areas where open ocean aquaculture could take place, with relatively little conflict. However, more detailed investigations and consultations are recommended in order to confirm existing data, to gather data where it is lacking, and to examine the potential for aquaculture to coexist with any existing uses or activities

Download or read book Water Circulation and Management of Infectious Salmon Anemia in the Salmon Aquaculture Industry of Cobscook Bay Maine and Adjacent Southwestern New Brunswick written by B. D. Chang and published by St. Andrews, N.B. : Fisheries and Oceans Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infectious salmon anemia (ISA) was first detected in salmon farms of southwestern New Brunswick in 1996 and in adjacent Cobscook Bay, Maine in 2001. There was speculation that the virus may have been transmitted through the water between farms in the two jurisdictions. In an effort to help estimate the potential for water exchange of the ISA virus between farms in Cobscook Bay and adjacent areas of southwestern New Brunswick, a three-dimensional tidal water circulation and particle transport model was used. Water exchange scenarios based on the movement of particles during one tidal excursion, as predicted by the model, are compared to those estimated by a simple method assuming a 5-km radius circular zone of water exchange around each farm
