Download or read book Values World Society and Modelling Yearbook 2014 written by Gordon Burt and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Values, World Society and Modelling Yearbook 2014 analyses contemporary world events, drawing on foundational ideas in various academic disciplines. The year 2014 was the centenary of the start of the First World War and the seventieth anniversary of the Normandy landings in the Second World War. The year saw violent conflict in Ukraine and the rise of the Islamic State in parts of Syria and Iraq. A referendum was held in Scotland to decide whether to stay in the UK. Centrist parties lost ground in the European Parliament elections and a general election was held in India, the biggest ever election in the world. Thomas Piketty sparked debate with his analysis of growing inequality in capitalist economies. Politicians in the UK talked about ‘British values’ and debated ‘is Britain Christian?’ The British Museum lent one of the Elgin Marbles to the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and Putin made overtures to China. In California, Elliot Rodger went on the rampage, killing six people. Malala Yousafzay won the Nobel Peace Prize, Maryam Mirzakhani won the Fields Medal and Judit Polgar retired from international chess. Germany won the World Cup in Brazil. Echoes of the Big Bang confirmed the theory of how the universe began. The 2014 Yearbook discusses these events alongside a variety of other specific events and general issues. In addition, this book includes the speech given by Kevin Avruch when he was joint recipient of the Conflict Research Society Book of the Year Prize 2014 for his book Context and Pretext in Conflict Resolution.

Download or read book Future Directions for the National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Reports written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the United States devotes extensive resources to health care, evaluating how successfully the U.S. system delivers high-quality, high-value care in an equitable manner is essential. At the request of Congress, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) annually produces the National Healthcare Quality Report (NHQR) and the National Healthcare Disparities Report (NHDR). The reports have revealed areas in which health care performance has improved over time, but they also have identified major shortcomings. After five years of producing the NHQR and NHDR, AHRQ asked the IOM for guidance on how to improve the next generation of reports. The IOM concludes that the NHQR and NHDR can be improved in ways that would make them more influential in promoting change in the health care system. In addition to being sources of data on past trends, the national healthcare reports can provide more detailed insights into current performance, establish the value of closing gaps in quality and equity, and project the time required to bridge those gaps at the current pace of improvement.

Download or read book 14 19 diplomas written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Education and Skills Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-05-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 2004, the Tomlinson report (downloadable at http://www.dfes.gov.uk/14-19/documents/Final%20Report.pdf) set out wide-ranging proposals for changes to the curriculum and examination arrangements for the education of 14 to 19 year olds. In February 2005, the Government published its response in the form of a White Paper (Cm. 6476, ISBN 9780101647625) detailing a 10-year reform programme including the introduction of 14 new awards (originally called vocational Diplomas); thus rejecting the overarching Diploma award recommended in the Tomlinson report. Whilst stating its belief that the proposed changes would have been better structured and more coherent had Tomlinson's proposals been adopted, the Committee's report examines the design, development and implementation of the Government's Diplomas scheme.
