Desde la epoca griega, estas producciones se incluian en la poetica (o poesia), que aludia a toda actividad creativa realizada a partir del lenguaje. El termino litteratura (de littera, letra) se origina, concretamente, en la tradicion gramatical latina; mientras que el helenismo grammatica (de gramma, tambien letra) se conservo para referirse a los preceptos, literatura se reservo para la parte historica e interpretativa de la gramatica. En segundo lugar, La literatura no es un registro mas de la lengua, sino un modo de produccion discursiva que presenta sus propias reglas.
