Download or read book Nomograms for Army Manpower Policy Evaluation written by Pauline T. Olson and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents two sets of nomograms or charts developed on the basis of a series of eight manpower flow models to represent steady-state allocations for various tour lengths and types of assignment in CONUS and overseas. The charts can be used by management personnel to arrive at estimates of effects of a given policy alternative without recourse to a computer or mathematical formulation. Instructions for using the charts, the basic personnel system model, developmental algebraic equations, and an index for locating the appropriate nomogram for a given problem are provided.

Book excerpt: "This report describes the second of two studies of vigilance in connection with a road test sponsored by the American Association of State Highway Officials and administered by the Highway Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences. Army drivers operated trucks over experimental highways (Nov 1958 to Nov 1960) under conditions conducive to boredom and fatigue -- characteristic of many Army monitoring jobs. The primary objective of this study was to determine which, if any, of several well-known psychological domains hold most promise for prediction of vigilance performance. A total of 39 predictor and 2 reference measures, grouped into 8 predictor clusters and a single reference cluster, were administered. In general, both reliability and validity coefficients were low. The most promising predictors were the Personality, Personal History, Driver Aptitude, and Perceptual Speed clusters. The Cognitive, Physical, Psychomotor, and Attitudinal clusters were least promising. In spite of large and fairly stable individual differences in detection performance, the highly specific nature of the criterion and possible subject-task interaction appears to restrict the utility of standard general psychological predictors. Measures paralleling more closely parameters of the criterion task -- signal rates, intersignal intervals, sensory modes -- might be expected to show greater promise."--Abstract.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COMPUTERIZED MANPOWER SYSTEMS Task seeks to integrate the growing body of psychological, mathematical, and computer technology in the solution of problems in military manpower. One of its objectives has been to develop computer-aided research approaches and simulation tools useful in (1) defining general principles of manpower systems and (2) formulation and evaluation of manpower policies and procedures. Technical Research Report 1152 summarizes the research methodology developed or adapted by the U.S. Army Personnel Research Office to deal with manpower information problems. Particular concern is with relationships between the amount and type of information on which assignment decisions are made and the performance of the Army's enlisted personnel. Typical findings are: Total performance of Army enlisted personnel could be enhanced by using as performance estimates in optimal assignment procedures the full 2- or 3-digit scores on qualification measures. The effect of the one-digit score is more serious when the range of ability in the allocation group is narrow and when the general level of ability is lowered. More precise prediction of job performance could be attained by introducing performance estimates more closely resembling least squares regression estimates based on the full Army Classification Battery. Total performance could be increased by refinement of the Army Personnel System to afford additional job categories. Optimization techniques may be beneficially applied in the manpower system even though estimates of performance are ordinal (including various ways of ranking) and the assumption of an interval scale is not strictly met.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As part of a leadership research program at the U.S. Military Academy involving cadets in the Class of 1998, this report examined the viability of using archival data on prior cadets to estimate a variety of personality constructs among current cadets. Two sets of archival personality data on prior cadet classes were obtained. The first involved a short form administration of the ABLE inventory to cadets in the Class of 1994. The second involved the administration of the NEO Personality Inventory to the Class of 1996. Scores on the 12 scales contained in these inventories were used as archival criteria. Archival predictors were then sought from other and questionnaire items administered to cadets at the same point in time as the original inventories. For each scale, a different 20-item pool of predictors was developed from the archival items having the strongest zero order correlations with that scale. A series of multiple regression analyses was then used to predict scores on each scale. An average R2 of .39 per scale was obtained after cross validation. Both the original scales and their analogs tended to manifest similar relationships with two external criteria examined, leadership performance and attrition.--DTIC.

Download or read book Study of Two Image Interpreter Map Displays written by Richard S. Laymon and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparison was made of two methods of displaying reference maps for the use of image interpreters in a tactical image interpretation facility (TIIF). Image interpreters were required to perform two tasks -- to match imagery to a reference map and then to estimate the coordinates of a point on the image. Time taken to reach correct solutions was compared when reference maps were displayed from simulated slide chips (map sections projected onto a fixed screen) and when hard-copy map chips (standard presentation) were used. Measures of performance with both display modes were obtained under experimental conditions where the image would appear on one or two chips. Two conditions of imagery orientation for each map display mode were also imposed: one in which position of the imagery was fixed and one in which the imagery could be freely oriented to the map display. Separate analyses of variance were conducted on time scores from the matching and locating tasks. The following major conclusions were derived: (1) Display of map information upon a screen instead of by hard copy increased time taken by an interpreter to match imagery and to determine map coordinates of an object on an image; the longer time required when the interpreters used map chips was attributable to need to study two slides when the imaged area lay on the boundary of one or both chips. (2) Freedom to orient an image relative to a map display did not affect time taken to complete either the matching or the locating task. (Author).
