Book A Course in Approximation Theory

Download or read book A Course in Approximation Theory written by Elliott Ward Cheney and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is designed for graduate students in mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. Its purpose is to guide the reader in exploring contemporary approximation theory. The emphasis is on multi-variable approximation theory, i.e., the approximation of functions in several variables, as opposed to the classical theory of functions in one variable. Most of the topics in the book, heretofore accessible only through research papers, are treated here from the basics to the currently active research, often motivated by practical problems arising in diverse applications such as science, engineering, geophysics, and business and economics. Among these topics are projections, interpolation paradigms, positive definite functions, interpolation theorems of Schoenberg and Micchelli, tomography, artificial neural networks, wavelets, thin-plate splines, box splines, ridge functions, and convolutions. An important and valuable feature of the book is the bibliography of almost 600 items directing the reader to important books and research papers. There are 438 problems and exercises scattered through the book allowing the student reader to get a better understanding of the subject.

Book Approximation Theory and Methods

Download or read book Approximation Theory and Methods written by M. J. D. Powell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-03-31 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most functions that occur in mathematics cannot be used directly in computer calculations. Instead they are approximated by manageable functions such as polynomials and piecewise polynomials. The general theory of the subject and its application to polynomial approximation are classical, but piecewise polynomials have become far more useful during the last twenty years. Thus many important theoretical properties have been found recently and many new techniques for the automatic calculation of approximations to prescribed accuracy have been developed. This book gives a thorough and coherent introduction to the theory that is the basis of current approximation methods. Professor Powell describes and analyses the main techniques of calculation supplying sufficient motivation throughout the book to make it accessible to scientists and engineers who require approximation methods for practical needs. Because the book is based on a course of lectures to third-year undergraduates in mathematics at Cambridge University, sufficient attention is given to theory to make it highly suitable as a mathematical textbook at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Book Korovkin type Approximation Theory and Its Applications

Download or read book Korovkin type Approximation Theory and Its Applications written by Francesco Altomare and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 30 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics. While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathematicians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community. Please submit any book proposals to Niels Jacob.

Book Fundamentals of Approximation Theory

Download or read book Fundamentals of Approximation Theory written by Hrushikesh Narhar Mhaskar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of approximation theory has become so vast that it intersects with every other branch of analysis and plays an increasingly important role in applications in the applied sciences and engineering. Fundamentals of Approximation Theory presents a systematic, in-depth treatment of some basic topics in approximation theory designed to emphasize the rich connections of the subject with other areas of study. With an approach that moves smoothly from the very concrete to more and more abstract levels, this text provides an outstanding blend of classical and abstract topics. The first five chapters present the core of information that readers need to begin research in this domain. The final three chapters the authors devote to special topics-splined functions, orthogonal polynomials, and best approximation in normed linear spaces- that illustrate how the core material applies in other contexts and expose readers to the use of complex analytic methods in approximation theory. Each chapter contains problems of varying difficulty, including some drawn from contemporary research. Perfect for an introductory graduate-level class, Fundamentals of Approximation Theory also contains enough advanced material to serve more specialized courses at the doctoral level and to interest scientists and engineers.

Book Quantitative Approximation

Download or read book Quantitative Approximation written by Ronald A. Devore and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative Approximation provides information pertinent to nonlinear approximation, including rational approximation and optimal knot spline approximation. This book discusses spline approximation with the most emphasis on multivariate and knot independent questions. Organized into 26 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the inequality for the sharp function in terms of the maximal rearrangement. This text then examines the best co-approximation in a Hilbert space wherein the existence ad uniqueness sets are the closed flats. Other chapters consider the inverse of the coefficient matrix for the system satisfied by the B-spline coefficients of the cubic spline interpolant at knots. This book discusses as well the relationship between the structural properties of a function and its degree of approximation by rational functions. The final chapter deals with the problem of existence of continuous selections for metric projections and provides a solution for this problem. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians.

Book Linear Spaces and Approximation Lineare R ume und Approximation

Download or read book Linear Spaces and Approximation Lineare R ume und Approximation written by Butzer and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of Oberwolfach conference books was initiated by Birkhauser Publishers in 1964 with the proceedings of the conference 'On Approximation Theory', conducted by P. L. Butzer (Aachen) and J. Korevaar (Amsterdam). Since that auspicious beginning, others of the Oberwolfach proceedings have appeared in Birkhauser's ISNM series. The present volume is the fifth * edited at Aachen in collaboration with an external institution. It once again ad dresses itself to the most recent results on approximation and operator theory, and includes 47 of the 48 lectures presented at Oberwolfach, as well as five articles subsequently submitted by V. A. Baskakov (Moscow), H. Esser (Aachen), G. Lumer (Mons), E. L. Stark (Aachen) and P. M. Tamrazov (Kiev). In addition, there is a section devoted to new and unsolved problems, based upon two special problem sessions augmented by later communications from the participants. Corresponding to the nature of the conference, the aim of the organizers was to solicit both specialized and survey papers, ranging in the broad area of classical and functional analysis, from approximation and interpolation theory to Fourier and harmonic analysis, and to the theory of function spaces and operators. The papers were supplemented by lectures on fields represented for the first time in our series of Oberwolfach Conferences, so for example, complex function theory or probability and sampling theory.

Book Delay Equations Approximation and Application

Download or read book Delay Equations Approximation and Application written by MEINARDUS and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international symposium held in October 1984 at the Uni versity of Mannheim was the first with the special aim to expose the connection of the Theory of Delay Eauations and Approximation Theory with the emphasis on constructive methods and applications. Although the separate character of both domains is reflected by their historical development, the latest research shows that the numerical treatment of Delay Equations leads to various appro ximation and optimization problems. An introductory survey of this circle of problems written by the editors is included at the beginning of the book. Delay Equations have their origin in domains of applications, such as physics, engineering, biology, medicine and economics. They appear in connection with the fundamental problem to analyse a retarded process from the real world, to develop a corresponding mathematical model and to determine the future behavior. Thirty mathematicians attended the conference coming from Germany, West- and Eastern Europe and the United States- more than twenty of them presented a research talk. The lectures about Delay Equations were mainly oriented on the following subjects: single-step, multi-step and spline methods; monotonicity methods for error estimations; asymptotic behavior 10 and periodicity of solutions. The topics of the talks on Approxi mation Theory covered different aspects of approximation by poly nomials, splines and rational functions and their numerical rea lization. Additionally included in the scientific program was a special session on Open Problems, where several suggestions were made for further research concerning both fields.
