Book excerpt: Environ 5 % des enfants tout-venant sont considérés par l'école et les spécialistes comme présentant un trouble des apprentissages. Malgré ce chiffre relativement important, les troubles des apprentissages restent l'un des domaines les moins connus et les plus débattus. Ces troubles font obstacle à la réussite scolaire, peuvent apparaître dans un contexte de retard global, ou être plus spécifiques en cas de déficit limité à un certain processus cognitif. Ils concernent une large palette de troubles qui va des troubles du langage et de la parole aux troubles des aptitudes perceptives ou motrices. Les troubles spécifiques des apprentissages ont fait l'objet de différentes définitions qui n'ont cessées d'évoluer grâce aux résultats issus de la recherche. Cependant, parce que certaines définitions ne donnent pas de critères diagnostiques précis, il subsiste un abus d'utilisation de ces conceptions. L'approche neuropsychologique des troubles des apprentissages développée au sein du présent ouvrage insiste sur la nécessité de définir ces troubles de manière précise d'un point de vue sémiologique, étiologique et anatomo-clinique afin de pouvoir mettre en place la prise en charge la plus adaptée. Les différents auteurs ayant contribué au présent ouvrage ont ainsi fait l'effort de caractériser les troubles de la lecture, du calcul, des fonctions exécutives, de la perception, de l'action sans oublier les troubles envahissants du développement et les troubles des apprentissages des enfants précoces, en adoptant une démarche neuropsychologique visant à définir d'un point de vue clinique et théorique les mécanismes cognitifs déficitaires, les dysfonctionnements cérébraux qui leur sont associés et leur origine possible. Approximately half of these children with epilepsy display academic difficulties and/or behavioral disorders. Moreoever, it is now believed that a sizable proportion of children with learning disability suffer from undiagnosed epilepsy. While a great number of textbooks have been devoted to various medical aspects of chi- hood epilepsy (diagnosis, genetics, etiology, drug and surgical treatment, etc.), there have been no comprehensive accounts of the cognitive consequences of this condition. Advance of medical knowledge has shown that childhood epilepsy should not be considered as a single disorder but encompasses a whole range of different conditions that exhibit specific clinical EEG and outcome characteristics. It is not becoming apparent that these various clinical entities have different cognitive expression that yet need to be specified. The purpose of this book is to provide a complete up-to-date analysis of this multi-faceted pathology.

" First reported by Rei! in 1812, this anomaly has since been described by several investigators. Interest in this malformation was revived in the 1970s by studies of interhemispheric transfer in Bogen and Vogel's commissurotomized patients and the subsequent findings by Sperry that acallosal patients were devoid of the typical disconnection deficits found in patients with surgical transection of the corpus callosum. Since this seminal work, the bulk of neuropsychological research on callosal agenesis has focused on the particulars of interhemispheric transfer and integration. An ever-growing literature has emerged on the subject, attempting to specify the extent and limits of neural plasticity in a nervous system that has evolved in the absence of the most important interhemispheric pathway. Whilst callosal agenesis proves to be an excellent model of cerebral plasticity, it has to be pointed out that this anomaly is often associated with other malformations and neurological diseases that may result in different degrees of mental retardation or other cognitive and sensorimotor deficits. In this context, neurological research on callosal agenesis has concentrated on the description of various syndromes associated with this pathology as well as on the attempt to specify its neurobehavioral manifestations.
