Book excerpt: La segmentation d'image est une opération de traitement d'image de bas niveau qui consiste à localiser dans une image les régions (ensembles de pixels) appartenant à une même structure (objets ou scène imagés). Cette opération est à la base de nombreuses applications tant en vision industrielle, qu'en imagerie médicale. De nombreuses recherches ont eu lieu dans le passé sur les méthodes de segmentation. Il en résulte un très grand nombre de méthodes dont la comparaison, soit en terme de structure soit en terme de performance, est très difficile. L'objectif de cette thèse est de proposer une nouvelle vision de la segmentation d'images basée sur un modèle fonctionnel (MF) original. Ce modèle qui décrit la segmentation en termes de fonctions, se présente sous la forme d'un opérateur de segmentation (OS). L'OS est composé de cinq blocs élémentaires enchaînés au cours d'un processus itératif qui correspond au processus de segmentation. Ce modèle fonctionnel unifie les méthodes de segmentation sous un formalisme commun et permet une meilleure compréhension de ces méthodes. En effet, la décomposition avec la même logique de techniques de segmentation (simple ou complexe) a priori totalement différentes a été obtenue et implantée. Cela a permis de montrer la généricité du modèle proposé et son utilité pour la structuration, la comparaison et l'implantation logicielle des nombreuses méthodes de segmentation. Ces décompositions qui ont conduit à un certain nombre de blocs fonctionnels indépendants, ont servi à la réalisation d'un logiciel modulaire dénommé GenSeg. Ce logiciel peut aider à terme à construire de nouvelles techniques de segmentation.

Segmenter une image consiste à trouver une partition constituée de régions, c'est-à-dire d'ensembles de pixels connexes homogènes selon un critère choisi. L'objectif de la segmentation consiste à obtenir des régions correspondant aux objets ou aux parties des objets qui sont présents dans l'image et dont la nature dépend de l'application visée. Même s'il peut être très fastidieux, un tel découpage de l'image peut être facilement obtenu par un être humain. Il n'en est pas de même quand il s'agit de créer un programme informatique dont l'objectif est de segmenter les images de manière entièrement automatique. La segmentation interactive est une approche semi-automatique où l'utilisateur guide la segmentation d'une image en donnant des indications. Les méthodes qui s'inscrivent dans cette approche se divisent en deux catégories en fonction de ce qui est recherché : les contours ou les régions. Les méthodes qui recherchent des contours permettent d'extraire un unique objet correspondant à une région sans trou. L'utilisateur vient guider la méthode en lui indiquant quelques points sur le contour de l'objet. L'algorithme se charge de relier chacun des points par une courbe qui respecte les caractéristiques de l'image (les pixels de part et d'autre de la courbe sont aussi dissemblables que possible), les indications données par l'utilisateur (la courbe passe par chacun des points désignés) et quelques propriétés intrinsèques (les courbes régulières sont favorisées). Les méthodes qui recherchent les régions groupent les pixels de l'image en des ensembles, de manière à maximiser la similarité en leur sein et la dissemblance entre les différents ensembles. Chaque ensemble correspond à une ou plusieurs composantes connexes et peut contenir des trous. L'utilisateur guide la méthode en traçant des traits de couleur qui désignent quelques pixels appartenant à chacun des ensembles. Si la majorité des méthodes ont été conçues pour extraire un objet principal du fond, les travaux menés durant la dernière décennie ont permis de proposer des méthodes dites multiclasses, capables de produire une partition de l'image en un nombre arbitraire d'ensembles. La contribution principale de ce travail de recherche est la conception d'une nouvelle méthode de segmentation interactive multiclasse par recherche des régions. Elle repose sur la modélisation du problème comme la minimisation d'une fonction de coût pouvant être représentée par un graphe de facteurs. Elle intègre une méthode de classification par apprentissage supervisé assurant l'adéquation entre la segmentation produite et les indications données par l'utilisateur, l'utilisation d'un nouveau terme de régularisation et la réalisation d'un prétraitement consistant à regrouper les pixels en petites régions cohérentes : les superpixels. L'utilisation d'une méthode de sur-segmentation produisant des superpixels est une étape clé de la méthode que nous proposons : elle réduit considérablement la complexité algorithmique et permet de traiter des images contenant plusieurs millions de pixels, tout en garantissant un temps interactif. La seconde contribution de ce travail est une évaluation des algorithmes permettant de grouper les pixels en superpixels, à partir d'un nouvel ensemble de données de référence que nous mettons à disposition et dont la particularité est de contenir des images de tailles différentes : de quelques milliers à plusieurs millions de pixels. Cette étude nous a également permis de concevoir et d'évaluer une nouvelle méthode de production de superpixels.

Les modèles déformables sont actuellement des approches de segmentation très populaires et sont toujours en plein évolution. Ils sont largement utilisés dans de nombreux domaines. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, notre intérêt s'est porté dans un premier lieu, à la comparaison qualitative et quantitative des performances de huit modèles déformables, représentatifs de l'état de l'art actuel du domaine. L'étude comparative a porté sur des images de synthèse et sur des images réelles. Nous avons pris le soin de construire une base d'images de synthèse dont chacune présentant une difficulté typique, en simulant une dégradation particulière. Cela permet l'étude et l'analyse des qualités, des faiblesses et des limitations d'une approche donnée. Les résultats de comparaison sont une aide précieuse aux utilisateurs qu'en au choix d'un algorithme donné pour résoudre une problématique particulière de segmentation. Dans un second temps, nous avons proposé des améliorations de deux des modèles étudiés afin de pallier à certaines de leurs limitations. Ainsi nous avons proposé une modification de la fonction de détection de contour pour permettre au modèle de Li de segmenter avec succès des objets avec des angles très aigus et une modification majeur de la prise en compte de l'a priori de forme dans le modèle de Tsai. En effet, notre approche possède un compromis entre l'a priori et le terme d'attache aux données, donnant ainsi plus de flexibilité d'une part, et utilise l'ACP à noyau pour l'apprentissage et la modélisation de l'a priori de forme, offrant ainsi une augmentation non négligeable de l'impact de la prise en compte de cette a priori sur le résultat de la segmentation d'autre part.

L'approche proposée dans cette thèse repose sur la formulation du problème dans le cadre métrique, où les partitions de l'espace sont déterminées par la définition d'une distance.Deux types de distances sont étudiés afin d'appliquer le formalisme métrique à la segmentation d'images naturelles. Le premier est obtenu en mesurant une énergie le long des chemins. Nous construisons notamment une distance définie par le minimum de la variation totale de l'image sur les chemins. Nous considérons ensuite une représentation hiérarchique des contours des images fondée sur un deuxième type de distances, les ultramétriques. Enfin, au moyen de segmentations humaines, nous évaluons quantitativement notre approche et la comparons à d'autres méthodes de segmentation.

In many cases useful information and high quality must be extracted from the imaging. However, often raw signals are not directly suitable for this purpose and must be processed in some way. Such processing is called signal reconstruction. This book is devoted to a recent and original approach to signal reconstruction based on combining two independent ideas: local polynomial approximation and the intersection of confidence interval rule.

Book excerpt: The U.S. population is aging, and occupational therapy practitioners working with older adults must have the skills to address multiple health issues, including vision loss. Although typical aging does not cause low vision, four major causes of vision impairment are directly related to the aging process: (1) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), (2) diabetic retinopathy, (3) glaucoma, and (4) cataracts. Instances of these impairments are expected to double by the year 2050, making low vision a significant public health issue. This Practice Guideline includes occupational therapy assessment and intervention guidelines for older adults who have visual acuity impairments, visual field impairments, or both as a result of a low vision diagnosis. Screening, referral, and evaluation are covered for clients for central visual field impairments, such as AMD and cataract; peripheral field impairments, such as glaucoma, hemianopsia, and quadrantanopsia; and mixed visual field loss, such as diabetic retinopathy. This work can help occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants, as well as individuals who manage, reimburse, or set policy regarding occupational therapy services, understand the contribution of occupational therapy to treating older adults with low vision. Appendixes include selected diagnostic and billing codes and evidence tables.

Book excerpt: Understanding of animal social and sexual evolution has seen a renaissance in recent years with discoveries of frequent infidelity in apparently monogamous species, the importance of sperm competition, active female mate choice, and eusocial behavior in animals outside the traditional social insect groups. Each of these findings has raised new questions, and suggested new answers, about the evolution of behavioral interactions among animals. This volume synthesizes recent research on the sexual and social biology of the Crustacea, one of the dominant invertebrate groups on earth. Its staggering diversity includes ecologically important inhabitants of nearly every environment from deep-sea trenches, through headwater streams, to desert soils. The wide range of crustacean phenotypes and environments is accompanied by a comparable diversity of behavioral and social systems, including the elaborate courtship and wildly exaggerated morphologies of fiddler crabs, the mysterious queuing behavior of migrating spiny lobsters, and even eusociality in coral-reef shrimps. This diversity makes crustaceans particularly valuable for exploring the comparative evolution of sexual and social systems. Despite exciting recent advances, however, general recognition of the value of Crustacea as models has lagged behind that of the better studied insects and vertebrates.
