Book Big Picture Pedagogy Finding Interdisciplinary Solutions to Common Learning Problems

Download or read book Big Picture Pedagogy Finding Interdisciplinary Solutions to Common Learning Problems written by Regan A. R. Gurung and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a big-picture look at teaching and learning. Building on existing pedagogical research, this volume showcases the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) across the disciplines--and takes it in a new direction. In each chapter, interdisciplinary teams of authors address a single pedagogical question, bringing each of their home disciplines specific literature and methodologies to the table. The result is a fresh examination of evidence-based practices for teaching and learning in higher education that is intentionally inclusive of faculty from different disciplines. By taking a closer, more systematic look at the pedagogies used within the disciplines and their impacts on student learning, the authors herein move away from more generic teaching tips and generic classroom activities and toward values, knowledge, and manner of thinking within SoTL itself. The projects discussed in each chapter, furthermore, will provide models for further research via interdisciplinary collaboration. This is the 151st volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education series. It offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

Book excerpt: Creative Approaches to Problem Solving (CAPS) is a comprehensive text covering the well-known, cited, and used system for problem solving and creativity known as Creative Problem Solving (CPS). CPS is a flexible system used to help individuals and groups solve problems, manage change, and deliver innovation. It provides a framework, language, guidelines, and set of easy-to-use tools for understanding challenges, generating ideas and transforming promising ideas into action. The aim has been to aid attention, retention, and practical application - Enhanced emphasis on flexible, dynamic process-- Enables users to select and apply CPS tools, components, and stages in a meaningful way that meets their actual needs - A framework for problem solving that has been tested and applied across ages, settings, and cultures-- Readers can apply a common approach to process across many traditional "boundaries" that have limited effectives. Book Complex Problem Solving

Download or read book Complex Problem Solving written by Peter A. Frensch and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a state-of-the-science review of the most promising current European research -- and its historic roots of research -- on complex problem solving (CPS) in Europe. It is an attempt to close the knowledge gap among American scholars regarding the European approach to understanding CPS. Although most of the American researchers are well aware of the fact that CPS has been a very active research area in Europe for quite some time, they do not know any specifics about even the most important research. Part of the reason for this lack of knowledge is undoubtedly the fact that European researchers -- for the most part -- have been rather reluctant to publish their work in English-language journals. The book concentrates on European research because the basic approach European scholars have taken to studying CPS is very different from one taken by North American researchers. Traditionally, American scholars have been studying CPS in "natural" domains -- physics, reading, writing, and chess playing -- concentrating primarily on exploring novice-expert differences and the acquisition of a complex skill. European scholars, in contrast, have been primarily concerned with problem solving behavior in artificially generated, mostly computerized, complex systems. While the American approach has the advantage of high external validity, the European approach has the advantage of system variables that can be systematically manipulated to reveal the effects of system parameters on CPS behavior. The two approaches are thus best viewed as complementing each other. This volume contains contributions from four European countries -- Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain, and Germany. As such, it accurately represents the bulk of empirical research on CPS which has been conducted in Europe. An international cooperation started two years ago with the goal of bringing the European research on complex problem solving to the awareness of American scholars. A direct result of that effort, the contributions to this book are both informative and comprehensive.

Book Simple Treatments for Complex Problems

Download or read book Simple Treatments for Complex Problems written by Kimberly A. Driscoll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) is a set of techniques that has proven to be efficacious in the treatment of chronic depression. This book describes ways in which it can be extended in the treatment of patients with a wide variety of psychological disorders and difficulties, in a wide variety of settings. Vivid case illustrations and session transcripts illuminate the authors' presentation of appropriate modifications and implementations of the basic approach for personality and anxiety disorders, behavior problems in children, couples distress, and anger. The approach is flexible, efficient, and simple to train. One chapter focuses on methods for helping parents to help their own children more effectively. CBASP has been shown to work both for patients with severe psychological symptoms and for those with more common everyday problems; both for those who are psychologically sophisticated and for those who are not. Simple Treatments for Complex Problems offers powerful new tools for the clinical armamentarium of mental health professionals who do psychotherapy, and the conceptual armamentarium of those who train them and study treatment effectiveness.
