Download or read book Empirical and Theoretical Approaches to Language Acquisition written by Merle Weicker and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-25 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents original up-to-date research in the field of language acquisition. The contributions reflect experimental work guided by linguistic theory, covering different populations of learners, a wide range of linguistic phenomena, a variety of empirical methods, and a rich set of typologically different languages. The studies investigate first and second language acquisition, as well as acquisition in children with developmental language disorder or hearing impairment. The different chapters address various phenomena in the areas of morpho-syntax, phonology, and semantics. This edited collection of papers is a valuable reference for researchers who are interested in language acquisition research and its multifaceted nature. The book highlights the fruitful connection between empirical research and linguistic theory, making it interesting to both psycholinguists and theoretical linguists. The experimental studies collected in this book contribute to our understanding of how different types of learners acquire and process language and can offer novel insights to theoretical linguistics as well.
Download or read book Adverbs and Adverbial Adjuncts at the Interfaces written by Katalin É. Kiss and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book clarifies - on the basis of mainly Hungarian data - basic issues concerning the category ‘adverb,’ the function ‘adverbial,’ and the grammar of adverbial modification. It argues for the PP analysis of adverbials, and claims that they enter the derivation via left- and right-adjunction. Their merge-in position is determined by the interplay of syntactic, semantic, and prosodic factors. The semantically motivated constraints discussed also include a type restriction affecting adverbials semantically incorporated into the verbal predicate, an obligatory focus position for scalar adverbs representing negative values of bidirectional scales, cooccurrence restrictions between verbs and adverbials involving incompatible subevents, etc. The order and interpretation of adverbials in the postverbal domain is shown to be affected by such phonologically motivated constraints as the Law of Growing Constituents, and by intonation phrase restructuring. The shape of the light-headed chain arising in the course of locative PP incorporation is determined by morpho-phonological requirements. The types of adverbs and adverbials analyzed include locatives, temporals, comitatives, epistemic adverbs, adverbs of degree, manner, counting, and frequency, quantificational adverbs, and adverbial participles.
Download or read book Boundaries Crossed at the Interfaces of Morphosyntax Phonology Pragmatics and Semantics written by Huba Bartos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a selection of interface studies in generative linguistics, a valuable “one-stop shopping” opportunity for readers interested in the ways in which the various modules of linguistic analysis intersect and interact. The boundaries between the lexicon and morphophonology, between morphology and syntax, between morphosyntax and meaning, and between morphosyntax and phonology are all being crossed in this volume. Though its focus is on theoretical approaches, experimental studies are also included. The empirical focus of many of the contributions is on Hungarian, and several chapters respond to work published by István Kenesei, to whom the volume is dedicated.

Download or read book Innovation and Structural Change in Post Socialist Countries A Quantitative Approach written by David A. Dyker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a range of S&T and structural indicators to analyse the transfonnation process, in particular the transfonnation of science, technology and industry, in the fonner communist countries. The book originates from a sense of the tremendous need for quantitative indicators for assessing trends and perfonnance in the post-socialist economies. S&T systems in the region have passed through the first phase of rapid deterioration, or as it is called by some analysts 'implosion'. After ten years of transfonnation we are witnessing a process of increasing differentiation of these countries in tenns of general patterns of growth and structural change, as well as specific lines of restructuring in their S&T systems. The question of sources of growth - or indeed of stagnation - is an increasingly urgent one, from both the policy and academic perspectives. In that context there is a pressing need for in-depth assessment of restructuring patterns in science, technology and industry in the region, as a basis for understanding how restructuring in S&T is linked to industrial restructuring, and to general economic and social transfonnation. As the contributions to this volume show, there is now a critical mass of quantitative data across the post-socialist countries which deserves to be studied more thoroughly in a comparative manner. The changes of the last ten years have produced varying patterns of adjustment which are now clearly visible in S&T and structural indicators.
Download or read book The Cartography of Chinese Syntax written by Wei-Tien Dylan Tsai and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume provides new insights into the architecture of Chinese grammar from a comparative perspective, using principles of cartography. The chapters in this book map out the "topography" of a variety of constructions in Chinese, specifically information structure, wh-question formation, and peripheral functional elements. The syntactic structure of Chinese makes it an ideal language for this line of research, offering a window into the origin of heavily "scrambled" constructions often observed in other languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book is about one of the most important questions under investigation both in Hungary and throughout Europe, namely, how and under what effects is traditional popular culture territorially distributed. This work uses new methods and new sources; it is based on the digital elaboration of the biggest and most comprehensive data set of Hungarian ethnological research, the 634 maps of the Atlas of Hungarian Folk Culture. Borsos's interdisciplinary elaboration creates a synthesis in ethnocartography with the help of mathematical, statistical methods and computerised cluster analysis, and thus assures an important leap in the science of ethnography.' Committee of Ethnology, Hungarian Academy of Sciences 'This work is a compendium, in the classical sense of the word, justifying, clarifying or eventually refuting our former knowledge obtained on the extremely rich distribution pattern of land and culture which characterises the Hungarian people. A comprehensive outlook, giving help to find our way in the complicated spatial labyrinth of cultural organisation.' Balázs Balogh, Director, HAS RCH Institute of Ethnology Balázs Borsos, Prof., DSc. of ethnography, has been working at the Institute of Ethnology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for nearly 30 years, since 2010 as scientific councilor (full professor). He was deputy director of the institute between 2002 and 2012. His main research interests lie in visual and ecological anthropology, ethnocartography, African ethnology.

Download or read book The Creation of the Austro Hungarian Monarchy written by Gábor Gyáni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent collection of essays discusses the historical event and the multifarious consequences of the 1867 Compromise (Ausgleich, Settlement), conducted between the Habsburg monarch, Francis Joseph and the Hungarian political ruling class. The whole story has usually been narrated from a plainly Cisleithanian viewpoint. The present volume, the product of Hungarian historians, gives an insight into both the domestic and the international historical discourses about the Dual Monarchy. It also reveals the process of how the 1867 Compromise was conducted, and touches upon several of the key issues brought about by establishing a constitutional dual state in place of the absolutist Habsburg Monarchy. The emphasis is laid not on describing and explaining the path leading to the final and "inevitable" break-up of the Dual Monarchy, but on what actually held it together for half a century. The local outcomes of self-maintaining mechanisms were no less obvious in the Hungarian part of the Dual Monarchy, despite the many manifestations of an overt adversity toward it. The Creation of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy will appeal to historians dealing especially with 19th-century European history, and is also essential reading for university students.

Download or read book Pricing health services Transaction cost approach written by Monika Raulinajtys-Grzybek and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2015-03-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study is the result of the research on the transaction costs of the pricing of health services. Due to the fact that the regulations in terms of pricing include activities that lead to price-setting of a good (health service), costs associated with these activities should be treated as transaction costs. According to the assumptions of classical economics, the price should be set at the intersection of the supply and demand curve under the assumption of full information and rationality of market participants. The primary objective of the study is to identify the transaction costs occurring during the pricing of health services (and relate these cost to the institutional environment and the organization of pricing transaction) and characterize the factors that affect the level of transaction costs – to present the force and direction of the relationship between each of the factors and the level of transaction costs. An additional objective of this study is to link the conclusions about the level of transaction costs to the conclusions regarding the accuracy of the cost-based pricing in health care. The accuracy of the pricing system is related to the degree to which the price structure reflects the actual cost structure of the health services. The institutional approach will add up to the existing research on the importance of cost information for the pricing of health services. The empirical part of the work was carried out based on the analysis of primary and secondary sources. Its aim was to present how pricing is organized in seventeen countries selected.
