Will she be able to look over her own prejudice and apprehension, and see a worthy man who loves, and desires her?--------------------------------------------------------------"I thank you, Mr. Darcy. I do accept." It came out so quietly that it was barely heard, even to herself. She averted her eyes from him, resting them stubbornly on the ornament of the mantelpiece. She thought the silence between them lasted an eternity. Perhaps she should not have agreed so quickly, she thought in panic. She should have asked him for a day or two to think about his proposal. Her body stiffened involuntarily when she sensed him stepping closer. Her heart stopped when she felt his hot breath against her temple. "There is no need to be shy with me, Elizabeth." He tilted her chin making her look at him.His eyes were kind and his voice gentle, but she barely registered that. All she wanted was to be left alone now. She desperately craved a moment alone to think everything through. Her eyes widened in shock when he began leaning further towards her, his gaze focused on her lips. He wanted to kiss her! At the last moment, she turned her face from him, offering him instead her cheek."Forgive me," she heard, and he stepped back from her."I will go to Longbourn first thing in the morning to ask your father's permission." His voice sounded more formal now. "Perhaps you would wish to write a letter to your father, explaining the situation.""I... yes."He walked to her again. "Could you meet me early tomorrow in the grove, before my departure? Will seven o'clock not be too early?""No, I am used to rising early." She felt his gaze on her, but she refused to return it. He stood by her side for some time before walking in the direction of the door.At length, Elizabeth looked up at Mr. Darcy, standing by the door, but not reaching for the doorknob, as if he could not decide whether to go or stay. He was looking at her, and Elizabeth forced herself to smile at him. It was barely a shadow of a smile, which did not even reach her eyes; but Mr. Darcy had to take it for incentive, as he smiled back at her, widely, which completely changed his whole countenance. Before she knew it, he was beside her again, pulling her into his embrace. One of his hands was placed firmly around her waist, the other cradled her cheek. "I would wish to stay here with you longer, but I have to go. My aunt may have noticed my absence and guessed I am with you. It will be better for us not to mention about our understanding to her for now. You may tell Mrs. Collins of our engagement; she seems to be a sensible woman who can be trusted.""Yes, she is," Elizabeth whispered, her eyes stubbornly focused on his elaborately tied neck cloth, wishing him to simply go and leave her alone."What is the matter, Lizzy?" Elizabeth's eyes lifted up to him in surprise, her eyelashes fluttering. Had Mr. Darcy just called her Lizzy?"You look so very shocked," he chuckled, his whole face beaming at her. "I know that you did not expect my proposal. I understand you are still in awe and cannot believe your own good fortune." "Where is my impertinent little lady?" he asked laughingly, and when she did not answer, still staring at him as if spellbound, he sighed, shaking his head with a smile, and pressed her very tightly to himself. Elizabeth froze, feeling for the first time in her life, a hard male body next to hers. She had always known that he was tall, but in such close contact, she was more aware of how he was so very large.

Book excerpt: ³There was little danger of encountering the Bennet sisters ever again.² Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice is beloved by millions, but little is revealed in the book about the mysterious and handsome hero, Mr. Darcy. And so the question has long remained: Who is Fitzwilliam Darcy? Pamela Aidan's trilogy finally answers that long-standing question, creating a rich parallel story that follows Darcy as he meets and falls in love with Elizabeth Bennet. Duty and Desire, the second book in the trilogy, covers the "silent time" of Austen's novel, revealing Darcy's private struggle to overcome his attraction to Elizabeth while fulfilling his roles as landlord, master, brother, and friend. When Darcy pays a visit to an old classmate in Oxford in an attempt to shake Elizabeth from his mind, he is set upon by husband-hunting society ladies and ne'er-do-well friends from his university days, all with designs on him -- some for good and some for ill. He and his sartorial genius of a valet, Fletcher, must match wits with them all, but especially with the curious Lady Sylvanie. Irresistibly authentic and entertaining, Duty and Desire remains true to the spirit and events of Pride and Prejudice while incorporating fascinating new characters, and is sure to dazzle Austen fans and newcomers alike.

Book The Passion of Love in the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas

Download or read book The Passion of Love in the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas written by Daniel Joseph Gordon and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to three questions on love according to St. Thomas Aquinas (Summa Theologiae I?II, qq. 26?28). These three questions reflect on the nature of love (q. 26), the causes of love (q. 27), and the effects of love (q. 28). It is thus an introduction to the entire phenomenon of love, both as a bodily passion and an act of the will. The purpose is to present the Thomistic and broadly scholastic account of human and divine love from a philosophical and theological perspective. It aims to be a theological and philosophical study of the topic, useful both for a graduate/professional audience, as part of an undergraduate or graduate course, and perhaps for the educated reader. The thesis of the book is that, contrary to contemporary conceptions, not all loves are created equal. Some loves perfect us and some loves corrupt us. The worth of a love depends on its object and end. St. Thomas thus presents an objective and teleological account of human and divine love that is of philosophical and theological interest. The method is broadly exegetical, presenting a careful reading of the text and supplying the philosophical and theological background which the text of Aquinas assumes. The scope of the work is limited to three questions (ST I?II, qq. 26?28). References to interpretative disputes of Aquinas and references to further resources in the secondary literature will be mostly limited to the footnotes, making the body of the text accessible to more readers.

It is the greatest achievement of Saint Thomas Aquinas and one of the most influential works of Western literature and Philosophy. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern Philosophy was conceived as a reaction against, or as an agreement with, his ideas, particularly in the areas of Ethics, Natural Law, Metaphysics, and Political Theory. It is intended as a manual for beginners in Theology and a Compendium of all of the main Theological teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian Theology in the West. The book is famous, among other things, for its five arguments for the existence of God, the Quinque viae. The Summa Theologica's topics follow a cycle: The Existence of God; Creation, Man; Man's Purpose; Christ; The Sacraments; and back to God. The first part is on God. In it, he gives five proofs for God’s existence as well as an explication of His attributes. He argues for the actuality and incorporeality of God as the unmoved mover and describes how God moves through His thinking and willing. The second part is on Ethics. Thomas argues for a variation of the Aristotelian Virtue Ethics. However, unlike Aristotle, he argues for a connection between the virtuous man and God by explaining how the virtuous act is one towards the blessedness of the Beatific Vision (beata visio). The last part of the Summa is on Christ and was unfinished when Thomas died. In it, he shows how Christ not only offers salvation, but represents and protects humanity on Earth and in Heaven. This part also briefly discusses the sacraments and eschatology. The Summa remains the most influential of Thomas’s works. Saint Thomas Aquinas was a Dominican Priest, born near Aquino, Sicily in 1225. He was an immensely influential Philosopher and Theologian in the tradition of Scholasticism, known as Doctor Angelicus. He died in 1274. As one of the 33 Doctors of the Church, he is considered the Church's greatest Theologian and Philosopher. Thomas is held in the Catholic Church to be the model teacher for those studying for the priesthood. He was canonized in 1323. PUBLISHER: CATHOLIC WAY PUBLISHING

Book Summa Theologica All Complete Unabridged 3 Parts Supplement Appendix interactive links and annotations

This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 5383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Summa Theologica (All Complete & Unabridged 3 Parts + Supplement & Appendix + interactive links and annotations)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. This ebook is the best-known work of Thomas Aquinas (c.1225–1274). Although unfinished, the Summa is "one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature." It is intended as an instructional guide for moderate theologians, and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. The Summa Theologica is divided into three parts, and each of these three parts contains numerous subdivisions. Part 1 deals primarily with God and comprises discussions of 119 questions concerning the existence and nature of God, the Creation, angels, the work of the six days of Creation, the essence and nature of man, and divine government. Part 2 deals with man and includes discussions of 303 questions concerning the purpose of man, habits, types of law, vices and virtues, prudence and justice, fortitude and temperance, graces, and the religious versus the secular life. Part 3 deals with Christ and comprises discussions of 90 questions concerning the Incarnation, the Sacraments, and the Resurrection. Some editions of the Summa Theologica include a Supplement comprising discussions of an additional 99 questions concerning a wide variety of loosely related issues such as excommunication, indulgences, confession, marriage, purgatory, and the relations of the saints toward the damned. Scholars believe that Rainaldo da Piperno, a friend of Aquinas, probably gathered the material in this supplement from a work that Aquinas had completed before he began working on the Summa Theologica. It seeks to describe the relationship between God and man and to explain how man’s reconciliation with the Divine is made possible at all through Christ. To this end, Aquinas cites proofs for the existence of God and outlines the activities and nature of God. Approximately one-half of the Summa Theologica then examines the nature and purpose of man. Finally, Aquinas devotes his attention to the nature of Christ and the role of the Sacraments in effecting a bridge between God and man. Within these broad topical boundaries, though, Aquinas examines the nature of God and man in exquisite detail. His examination includes questions of how angels act on bodies, the union of body and soul, the cause and remedies of anger, cursing, and the comparison of one sin with another. Aquinas is attempting to offer a truly universal and rational view of all existence. Thomas Aquinas, O.P. (1225 – 1274), also Thomas of Aquin or Aquino, was an Italian Dominican priest, and an immensely influential philosopher and theologian in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the "Doctor Angelicus", "Doctor Communis", and "Doctor Universalis". He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology, and the father of Thomism. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy was conceived in development or refutation of his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory.
