Interest in translation and music, however, has so far been relatively limited, mainly because translation of musical material has been considered somewhat outside the limits of translation studies, as traditionally conceived. Difficulties associated with issues such as the 'musicality' of lyrics, the fuzzy boundaries between translation, adaptation and rewriting, and the pervasiveness of covert or unacknowledged translations of musical elements in a variety of settings have generally limited the research in this area to overt and canonized translations such as those done for the opera. Yet the intersection of translation and music can be a fascinating field to explore, and one which can enrich our understanding of what translation is and how it relates to other forms of expression. This special issue is an attempt to open up the field of translation and music to a wider audience within translation studies, and to an extent, within musicology and cultural studies. The volume includes contributions from a wide range of musical genres and languages: from those that investigate translation and code-switching in North African rap and rai, and the intertextual and intersemiotic translations revolving around Mahler's lieder in Chinese, to the appropriation and after-life of Kurdish folk songs in Turkish, and the emergence of rock'n roll in Russian. Other papers examine the reception of Anglo-American stage musicals and musical films in Italy and Spain, the concept of 'singability' with examples from Scandinavian languages, and the French dubbing of musical episodes of TV series. The volume also offers an annotated bibliography on opera translation and a general bibliography on translation and music.

Book excerpt: The Polysystem theory can be defined as a general model for understanding, analyzing and describing the functioning and evolution of literary systems, of which translation is one part. Developed by Itamar Even-Zohar and Gideon Toury, the Polysystem's most important contribution to Translation Studies is that it has generated a methodology. This thesis uses the Polysystem theory as an heuristic tool to analyze and describe the translations of Les Misérables (the novel) and Les Miz (the musical). Chapter 1 offers an overview of the Polysystem theory. Chapter Two discusses the socio-historical and literary context of the novel Les Misérables, as well as its critical reception. Chapter 3 compares five excerpts from two English translations of the novel, one from the 19 th century, the other from the 20 th century. Chapter 4 is primarily concerned with the theoretical difficulties involved in translating lyrics. Chapter 5 analyzes four song translations from the musical Les Miz by applying one of the concepts outlined in Chapter 4: rhythmic constraints. Chapter 6 first offers a brief history of the musical, and then discusses the place of Les Miz within the "musical Polysystem." The second half of Chapter 6 reveals how and why Les Miz was adapted to its target audience. Finally, Chapter 7 addresses two important theoretical implications: (i) the notion of adaptation; and (ii) "universal" translation norms. The thesis concludes with a critique of Toury's theory, but also outlines the positive contributions he has made to Translation Studies.

Indian music creates and represents meanings of all kings, some of which extend outwardly to the cosmos, while others arise inwardly, in the refined feelings which a musical connoisseur experiences when listening to it. In this book the author explores signification in Hindustani classical music along a two-fold path. Martineq first constructs a theory of musical semiotics based on the sign-theories of Charles Sanders Peirce. He then applies his theory to the analysis of various types of Hindustani music and how they generate significations. The author engages such fundamental issues as sound quality, raga, tala and form, while advancing his unique interpretations of well-known semiotic phenomena like iconicity, metalanguage, indexicality, symbolism, Martinez`s study also provides deep insight into semiotic issues of musical perception, performance, scholarship, and composition. An specially innovative and extensive section of the book analyzes representations in Hindustani music in terms of the Indian aesthetic theory of rasa. The evolution of the rasa system as applied to musical structures is traced historically and analyzed semiotically. In the light of Martinez`s theories, Hindustani music reveals itself to be both a delightfully sensuous and highly sophisticated system of acoustic representations.
