Book Applied Zoology and Biotechnology

Download or read book Applied Zoology and Biotechnology written by Dr. Sachin D. Misar and published by AG Publishing House. This book was released on with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term ‘biotechnology’ was used before the twentieth century for traditional activities such as making dairy products such as cheese and curd, as well as bread, wine, beer, etc. But none of these could be considered biotechnology in the modern sense. Genetic alteration of organisms through selective breeding, plant cloning by grafting, etc. do not fall under biotechnology More than a decade into the first human genome sequencing, the use of bioinformatic analysis has been steadily increasing. There are more web-based freely available databases and analytical tools than ever before. Modern biology has pervaded even the social sciences. For example, sociologists and psychologists are now probing how the epigenomic effects of environmental factors (including social factors) might shape the personality and behavior of the offspring postnatally. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has established an epigenomics database, which will be immensely useful to scientists in the near future. Thus, bioinformatics has been slowly but steadily pervading all branches of biology and beyond. In keeping with this, more and more bioinformatics books are being written for experts, which do not necessarily cater to the needs of the non-experts. People are studying biotechnology in different ways. Some people are devoted to developing new computational tools, both from software and hardware viewpoints, for the better handling and processing of biological data. They develop new models and new algorithms for existing questions and propose and tackle new questions when new experimental techniques bring in new data. Other people take the study of bioinformatics as the study of biology with the viewpoint of informatics and systems. These people also develop tools when needed, but they are more interested in understanding biological procedures and mechanisms. They do not restrict their research to computational study, but try to integrate computational and experimental invest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of all elements of animals is included within the scope of the scientific discipline known as zoology. Despite the fact that it is a very vast scientific discipline, zoology is really a subfield that falls under the more general umbrella of biology. Animal biotechnology is a subfield of biotechnology that involves the use of methods from molecular biology to the process of genetically engineering, or altering the genomes of, animals with the goal of making them more suitable for use in agricultural, industrial, or medicinal settings. The incorporation of animals into agricultural biotechnology is essential. It is put to use in the scientific and technical communities to bring about the creation of new species. This textbook on applied zoology and animal biotechnology covers a wide variety of topics, including but not limited to economically relevant livestock breeds, shifts in the paradigm of livestock production, the application of biotechnology to animal nutrition, and aided livestock reproduction. The application of genomics and GE technologies in cattle farming and management is another topic that receives a lot of attention in this book. This book presents the most cutting-edge techniques now available for farming poultry and shellfish. This book explores the potential of stem cell research and genetic engineering to improve the nutritional value of fish. Describes the biotechnology that is used in the production of food and milk.

Book Biodefense in the Age of Synthetic Biology

Download or read book Biodefense in the Age of Synthetic Biology written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-05 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific advances over the past several decades have accelerated the ability to engineer existing organisms and to potentially create novel ones not found in nature. Synthetic biology, which collectively refers to concepts, approaches, and tools that enable the modification or creation of biological organisms, is being pursued overwhelmingly for beneficial purposes ranging from reducing the burden of disease to improving agricultural yields to remediating pollution. Although the contributions synthetic biology can make in these and other areas hold great promise, it is also possible to imagine malicious uses that could threaten U.S. citizens and military personnel. Making informed decisions about how to address such concerns requires a realistic assessment of the capabilities that could be misused. Biodefense in the Age of Synthetic Biology explores and envisions potential misuses of synthetic biology. This report develops a framework to guide an assessment of the security concerns related to advances in synthetic biology, assesses the levels of concern warranted for such advances, and identifies options that could help mitigate those concerns.

Book Biotechnology Bridging Research and Applications

Download or read book Biotechnology Bridging Research and Applications written by Daphne Kamely and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-07-31 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biotechnology is advancing at a rapid pace with numerous applications in medicine, industry, agriculture and environmental remediation. Recognizing this, government, industrial and academic research and development invest ment in biotechnology has expanded rapidly. The past decade has seen the emergence of applications of this technology with a dual-use potential. Mili tary applications focus on four major areas: biomedical technology, such as vaccine development and medical diagnostics; detection of toxins, chemicals and pathogens; material biotechnology; and biological decontamination, in cluding biodegradation and bioremediation. This conference emphasizes the non-medical applications of biotechnol ogy. The first two sessions focus on the synthesis and properties of molecules that may be used in detectors. The traditional approach to detection of chemical and biological agents relied on the development of specific assays or analyses for known agents. Advances in molecular biology have made possible the production of large quantities of toxins which were previously available in minute quantities, and the molecular engineering of toxins and pathogens with specific pharmacologic and physical-chemical properties. In addition to the traditional approaches to detection of specific known compounds, biotechnology now offers generic approaches to detection. Physiological targets, known as receptors, are primary targets for many drugs and toxins. Similarly, pathogens rely on receptors to gain access to cells. These receptors function as sensitive detectors, generating signals which are transduced and amplified.

Book excerpt: With the train of civilization hurtling at ever-increasing speed towards self-destruction, the most pressing question facing humanity in the 21st century is that of the preservation of life itself. Can Life Prevail? provides a radical yet firmly grounded perspective on the ecological problems threatening both the biosphere and human culture. With essays covering topics as diverse as animal rights, extinction, deforestation, terrorism and overpopulation, Can Life Prevail? makes the lucid, challenging writing of Linkola available to the English-speaking public for the first time. "By decimating its woodlands, Finland has created the grounds for prosperity. We can now thank prosperity for bringing us - among other things - two million cars, millions of glowing, electronic entertainment boxes, and many unneeded buildings to cover the green earth. Surplus wealth has led to gambling in the marketplace and rampant social injustice, whereby 'the common people' end up contributing to the construction of golf courses, five-star hotels, and holiday resorts, while fattening Swiss bank accounts. Besides, the people of wealthy countries are the most frustrated, unemployed, unhappy, suicidal, sedentary, worthless and aimless people in history. What a miserable exchange." -Pentti Linkola Kaarlo Pentti Linkola was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1932. Having spent most of his life working as a professional fisherman, he now continues to lead a simple existence in the country. A renowned figure in Finland, Linkola has published numerous books and essays on environmentalism since the 1960s. Today, he is among the foremost exponents of the philosophy of deep ecology.
