Download or read book Encyclopedia of the Solar System written by Lucy-Ann McFadden and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-12-18 with total page 987 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before Galileo published his discoveries about Jupiter, lunar craters, and the Milky Way in the Starry Messenger in 1610, people were fascinated with the planets and stars around them. That interest continues today, and scientists are making new discoveries at an astounding rate. Ancient lake beds on Mars, robotic spacecraft missions, and new definitions of planets now dominate the news. How can you take it all in? Start with the new Encyclopedia of the Solar System, Second Edition. This self-contained reference follows the trail blazed by the bestselling first edition. It provides a framework for understanding the origin and evolution of the solar system, historical discoveries, and details about planetary bodies and how they interact—and has jumped light years ahead in terms of new information and visual impact. Offering more than 50% new material, the Encyclopedia includes the latest explorations and observations, hundreds of new color digital images and illustrations, and more than 1,000 pages. It stands alone as the definitive work in this field, and will serve as a modern messenger of scientific discovery and provide a look into the future of our solar system.· Forty-seven chapters from 75+ eminent authors review fundamental topics as well as new models, theories, and discussions· Each entry is detailed and scientifically rigorous, yet accessible to undergraduate students and amateur astronomers· More than 700 full-color digital images and diagrams from current space missions and observatories amplify the chapters· Thematic chapters provide up-to-date coverage, including a discussion on the new International Astronomical Union (IAU) vote on the definition of a planet· Information is easily accessible with numerous cross-references and a full glossary and index
Download or read book Astro Turf written by M. G. Lord and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A daughter's journey to rediscover her father and understand the culture of space engineers During the late 1960s, while M. G. Lord was becoming a teenager in Southern California and her mother was dying of cancer, Lord's father-an archetypal, remote, rocket engineer- disappeared into his work at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, building the space probes of the Mariner Mars 69 mission. Thirty years later, Lord found herself reporting on the JPL, triggering childhood memories and a desire to revisit her past as a way of understanding the ethos of rocket science. Astro Turf is the brilliant result of her journey of discovery. Remembering her pain at her father's absence, yet intrigued by what he did, Lord captures him on the page as she recalls her own youthful, eccentric fascination with science and space exploration. Into her family's saga she weaves the story of the legendary JPL- examining the complexities of its cultural history, from its start in 1936 to the triumphant Mars landings in 2004. She illuminates its founder, Frank Malina, whose brilliance in rocketry was shadowed by a flirtation with communism, driving him from the country even as we welcomed Wernher von Braun and his Nazi colleagues. Lord's own love of science fiction becomes a lens through which she views a profound cultural shift in the male-dominated world of space. And in pursuing the cause of her father's absence she stumbles on a hidden guilt, understanding "the anguish his proud silence caused both him and me, and how rooted that silence was in the culture of engineering."

Book excerpt: Three different chemical processing schemes were identified for separating lunar soils into the major oxides and elements. Feedstock production for space industry; an HF acid leach process; electrorefining processes for lunar free metal and metal derived from chemical processing of lunar soils; production and use of silanes and spectrally selective materials; glass, ceramics, and electrochemistry workshops; and an econometric model of bootstrapping space industry are discussed.

Download or read book Research in Physics and Chemistry written by Frank J. Malina and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in Physics and Chemistry contains the proceedings of the Third Lunar International Laboratory Symposium organized by the International Academy of Astronautics at the XVIIIth International Astronautical Congress, held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on September 28, 1967. The papers focus on the technical problems related to the construction of a manned research center on the Moon and consider the fields in which research should initially be undertaken. This book is comprised of nine chapters and begins with an an overview of the physical and chemical properties of the Moon, paying particular attention to the lunar surface and the various types of particles and rays impinging upon it. The reader is then introduced to anticipated vacuum conditions on the Moon and aspects of physico-chemical research in a lunar laboratory. Subsequent chapters discuss the use of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze organic matter on the Moon; investigations of the physical and mechanical properties of the Moon's soil from Luna 13; molecular beam experiments in the lunar environment; and metagalactic light measurements from the Moon. The last chapter describes the apparatus, the results, and the system to be used in a proposed optical workshop and repair facility to be established on the Moon. This monograph will be a useful resource for physicists, chemists, and space scientists as well as students and research workers interested in the physics and chemistry of the Moon.

Download or read book The Moon written by David Schrunk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-27 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary book details how the Moon could be used as a springboard for Solar System exploration. It presents a realistic plan for placing and servicing telescopes on the Moon, and highlights the use of the Moon as a base for an early warning system from which to combat threats of near-Earth objects. A realistic vision of human development and settlement of the Moon over the next one hundred years is presented, and the author explains how global living standards for the Earth can be enhanced through the use of lunar-based generated solar power. From that beginning, the people of the Earth would evolve into a spacefaring civilisation.

Book excerpt: The book includes selected papers from those presented at the International Working Meeting on Soil Micromorphology in San Antonio, Texas, July 1988. Each section of the book is introduced with an invited plenary paper followed by selected contributed manuscripts. The volume is intended to give the reader insight into the more recent research work involving soil micromorphology and an evaluation of the present day state of the science. New applications of micromorphology to both lunar pedology and archeology are presented. Recently developed methods for staining of microorganisms and thin section fluorescence microscopy are presented. The volume presents a summary of the research findings of the major practitioners of soil morphology and will give the reader insight as to the present state of the discipline. New methods and techniques will be made available to the reader. The book is intended for students, practicing micromorphologists, soil scientists, geologists, and geomorphologists.
