Book Handbook of Applied Psycholinguistics

Download or read book Handbook of Applied Psycholinguistics written by S. Rosenberg and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982. The chapters of this handbook contain critical integrative reviews of research and theory in the major areas of the field of applied psycholinguistics, the field in which applied problems of language and communicative functioning and development are approached from the standpoint of basic research and theory in psycholinguistics and related areas of cognitive psychology. The book was designed to meet the needs of researchers, practitioners and graduate students from such disciplines as education (including special education), language learning, linguistics, neurology, psychiatry, psychology, and speech and hearing for such reviews, although the state of research in an area and a desire to stress research and theory in substantive areas resulted in a decision not to include chapters on the measurement of linguistic maturity, language intervention, the language of the learning disabled child, language and environmental deprivation, language and mania, language and senile dementia, and the design of written and oral information and computer command language.

Book Corpus Discourse and Mental Health

Download or read book Corpus Discourse and Mental Health written by Daniel Hunt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated at the interface of corpus linguistics and health communication, Corpus, Discourse and Mental Health provides insights into the linguistic practices of members of three online support communities as they describe their experiences of living with and managing different mental health problems, including anorexia nervosa, depression and diabulimia. In examining contemporary health communication data, the book combines quantitative corpus linguistic methods with qualitative discourse analysis that draws upon recent theoretical insights from critical health sociology. Using this mixed-methods approach, the analysis identifies patterns and consistencies in the language used by people experiencing psychological distress and their role in realising varying representations of mental illness, diagnosis and treatment. Far from being neutral accounts of suffering and treating illness, corpus analysis illustrates that these interactions are suffused with moral and ideological tensions sufferers seek to collectively negotiate responsibility for the onset and treatment of recalcitrant mental health problems. Integrating corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis and health sociology, this book showcases the capacity of linguistic analysis for understanding mental health discourse as well as critically exploring the potential of corpus linguistics to offer an evidence-based approach to health communication research.

Book Mental Health Counseling for Men Practical Strategies and Effective Engagement

Download or read book Mental Health Counseling for Men Practical Strategies and Effective Engagement written by Bates, Daniel and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2024-05-20 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent times, researchers, theorists, and mental health counselors have directed increased attention toward understanding and effectively treating men’s mental health issues. However, a significant stumbling block persists—comprehensive and evidence-based recommendations for mental health professionals are notably scarce. This glaring gap leaves practitioners grappling with uncertainty, struggling to comprehend how to adeptly engage and clinically treat men in therapy. As societal trends show alarming rates of suicide, substance abuse, and a reluctance among men to seek mental health services, the call for innovative and creative strategies becomes increasingly urgent. Mental Health Counseling for Men: Practical Strategies and Effective Engagement is a groundbreaking exploration that boldly confronts the issue at hand. The book recognizes the importance for mental health professionals to move beyond traditional approaches and embrace innovative strategies to effectively reach and treat men. Serving as a response to the escalating crisis, the book acts as a guide that seamlessly blends theoretical insights, practical counseling approaches, and evidence-based interventions. By unearthing the underlying challenges contributing to the disproportionate rates of mental health issues among men, this book aims to equip mental health counselors with the knowledge and tools needed to address and reverse these alarming trends. It connects the interest in men's mental health with the lack of practical advice, providing a path for practitioners to transform men's mental health care.
