Book Applications of Hydrogen Peroxide and Derivatives

Download or read book Applications of Hydrogen Peroxide and Derivatives written by C W Jones and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simple, but beautifully versatile. Perhaps not a description many would choose for hydrogen peroxide, but an accurate one none the less, and this unique book explains the reasons behind the description. Beginning with an historical overview, and guidelines for the safe handling of peroxygens, Applications of Hydrogen Peroxide and Derivatives goes on to cover key activation mechanisms, organic functional group oxidations and the use of hydrogen peroxide with heterogeneous catalysts. The clean-up of environmental pollutants; chemical purification; and extraction of metals from their ores are also discussed in detail, using actual examples from industry. The versatility of this reagent may well prove to be a key to integrated pollution control in the future. This book should therefore be read by academics and industrialists at all levels, to encourage wider applications of the use of hydrogen peroxide in laboratories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Hydrogen Peroxide: A Health, Homeostatic and Protective Essentiality, verifies the crucial role of hydrogen peroxide, oxygen free radicals and electronically modified oxygen derivatives (EMODs) in healing, sexual function, reproduction, pathogen protection and cancer protection. Once again, we see that electronically modified oxygen derivatives (EMODs) are essential for homeostasis and normal functioning of the body and its organs. The fallen free radical theory has radically misled us many times for over half a century. Oxygen and its electronically modified oxygen derivative (EMOD) progeny are the sine qua non (the essential condition) of man's very existence. This is an inarguable fact. H2O2 is now recognized as a ubiquitous intracellular messenger under subtoxic conditions. Thus, get out of your head the concept that EMODs, and in particular hydrogen peroxide, are some cellular assassinating radical products generated only by angry PMNs. EMODs and hydrogen peroxide are intentionally generated salutary cellular products intended to help regulate critical metabolic and reproductive mechanisms. I believe that hydrogen peroxide is the most prevalent, and perhaps the most significant EMOD in the body, even exceeding the well recognized importance of nitric oxide. Hydrogen peroxide is ubiquitous, omnipresent and in steady state levels in all aerobic cells, due to its crucial protective role in sustaining and perpetuating mankind.

Book Handbook of Oxidants and Antioxidants in Exercise

Download or read book Handbook of Oxidants and Antioxidants in Exercise written by C. Sen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-02-16 with total page 1219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the science of exercise dates back to the time of ancient Greece. Today exercise is viewed not only as a leisurely activity but also as an effective preventive and therapeutic tool in medicine. Further biomedical studies in exercise physiology and biochemistry reports that strenuous physical exercise might cause oxidative lipid damage in various tissues. The generation of reactive oxygen species is elevated to a level that overwhelms the tissue antioxidant defense systems resulting in oxidative stress. The Handbook of Oxidants and Antioxidants in Exercise examines the different aspects of exercise-induced oxidative stress, its management, and how reactive oxygen may affect the functional capacity of various vital organs and tissues. It includes key related issues such as analytical methods, environmental factors, nutrition, aging, organ function and several pathophysiological processes. This timely publication will be of relevance to those in biomedical science and was designed to be readily understood by the general scientific audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a highly reactive compound produced by cells after secondary reactions as a result of the leakage of electrons from the electron transport chain in mitochondria or as a consequence of other enzymatic reactions. This book examines the detection, applications and health implications of hydrogen peroxide. Topics discussed include the ambient conditions of hydrogen peroxide advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment; the electrochemical approach to quantify cellular hydrogen peroxide and monitor its release process from living cells; H2O2 signalling and role in inflammation; H2O2 as a useful oxidative stressor to investigate various intracellular events under pathological conditions; uses of hydrogen peroxide in aquaculture; H2O2 in regulating fungal viability and pathogenicity; massive production of H2O2 upon ATP synthase activiation; and H2O2 based green oxidation reactions.
