Book Application of Two dimensional Vortex Theory to the Prediction of Flow Fields Behind Wings of Wing body Combinations at Subsonic and Supersonic Speeds

Download or read book Application of Two dimensional Vortex Theory to the Prediction of Flow Fields Behind Wings of Wing body Combinations at Subsonic and Supersonic Speeds written by Arthur Wm Rogers and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical investigation has been made of a general method for predicting the flow field behind the wings of plane and cruciform wings and body combinations at transonic or supersonic speeds and slender configurations at subsonic speeds. The wing trailing-vortex wake is represented initially by line vortices distributed to approximate the spanwise distribution of circulation along the trailing edge of the exposed wing panels. The afterbody is represented by corresponding image vortices within the body. Two-dimensional line-vortex theory is then used to compute the induced velocities at each vortex and the resulting displacement of each vortex is determined by means of a numerical stepwise integration procedure. The method is applied to the calculation of the position of the vortex wake and the estimation of downwash at chsen tail locations behind triangular-wing and cylindrical-body combinations at supersonic speeds. The effects of such geometric parameters as aspect ratio, angle of attack and incidence, ratio of body radius to wing semispan, and angle of bank on the vortex wake behind wings of wing-body combinations were studied. The relative importance of wing vortices, the corresponding image vortices within the body, and body crossflow in determining the total downwash was assessed at a possible tail location.

Book Theoretical Prediction of the Effects of Vortex Flows on the Loading Forces and Moments of Slender Aircraft

Download or read book Theoretical Prediction of the Effects of Vortex Flows on the Loading Forces and Moments of Slender Aircraft written by J. Richard Spahr and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical method based on slender-body theory is presented for the stepwise calculation of vortex paths in the presence of wing-body combinations and the determination of the load distributions, forces, and moments on the combinations due to the vortices. Comparisons of calculated and experimental results indicate that the vortex paths and the forces induced by the vortices can be closely predicted by the calculative method only for slender configurations. The total forces and moments, however, in many cases can be predicted adequately for nonslender as well as slender triangular-wing configurations.

Book General Theory of Wave drag Reduction for Combinations Employing Quasi cylindrical Bodies with an Application to Swept wing and Body Combinations

Download or read book General Theory of Wave drag Reduction for Combinations Employing Quasi cylindrical Bodies with an Application to Swept wing and Body Combinations written by Jack N. Nielsen and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wing-body interference theory of NACA TN 2677 applied to symmetrical wings in combination with quasi-cylindrical bodies permits the direct calculation of pressure-distribution changes produced by body shape changes. This theory is used to determine the relative magnitued of the wave-drag reduction produced by changes in cylinder cross-sectional area and that produced changes in cross-sectional shape (without change in area). The body distortion is expressed as a Fourier series, and an integral equation is derived for the body shape for minimum drag for each Fourier component. Thus the wave-drag reductions for the various Fourier harmonics are independent and additive.

Book Analysis of Wind tunnel Tests to a Mach Number of 0 90 of a Four engine Propeller driving Airplane Configuration Having a Wing with 40 Degrees Sweepback and an Aspect Ratio of 10

Download or read book Analysis of Wind tunnel Tests to a Mach Number of 0 90 of a Four engine Propeller driving Airplane Configuration Having a Wing with 40 Degrees Sweepback and an Aspect Ratio of 10 written by George G. Edwards and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted at speeds up to a Mach number of 0.90 to determine the effects of operating propellers on the longitudinal characteristics of a four-engine tractor airplane configuration having a 40 degrees swept wing with an aspect ratio of 10. Results of wind-tunnel tests of a model representing such an airplane configuration (see NACA TN 3789) show that these effects are of most concern in the low-speed high-thrust flight regime. In the present report the low-speed data are analyzed to determine the source of the various effects and to indicate how the adverse effects can be reduced, and the high-speed data are discussed primarily from the standpoint of Mach number effects. The analysis of the low-speed data indicates that the large variations of longitudinal stabil.itywith angle of attack resulted primarily from passage of the tail into and out of the slipstream. The slipstream also created large lift increments on the wing, particularly with flaps deflected, which resulted in increases in stability (with increasing thrust coefficient) from the outboard propeller and decreases in stability from the inboard propeller. It was concluded that the longitudinal stabiltty characteristics of the model couldbe improved by moving the nacelles outward, increasing the tail height, and reducing the tail span.
