Book Application of Roller Compacted Concrete RCC Technology to Roadway Paving Construction Productivity Advancement Research CPAR Program

Download or read book Application of Roller Compacted Concrete RCC Technology to Roadway Paving Construction Productivity Advancement Research CPAR Program written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to investigate the performance of a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavement for use as a high-speed surface. A test section consisting of a small parking lot and a two-lane roadway was constructed. During construction, three major parameters were varied: paver speed, rolling amount, and joint spacing. The paver speed was varied to determine what effect, if any, this has on average lay-down density, average final density, rideability, skid resistance, load transfer, and density profiles. The average lay-down and final densities of the RCC pavement were determined using a nuclear density device, which determined the density of various depths throughout the pavement. The load transfer was determined at transverse joints and transverse cracks by using falling weight deflectometer data. The rolling amount was varied to determine its effect on all of the same properties as paver speed except lay-down density. The joint spacing was varied to examine an optimum spacing that would not develop intermediate cracking and would provide the desired rideability and load transfer. From this project, it was determined that no adjustments in paver speed, rolling (types of patterns), or joint spacing will significantly enhance RCC pavement properties so that it may be used for high-speed applications.

Book Investigation of Roller Compacted Concrete for Use in Pavements in Virginia

This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) is a stiff mixture of aggregate, cementitious materials, and water with zero slump. RCC is consolidated or compacted in the fresh state by use of a roller with or without vibration. RCC typically is placed with asphalt paving equipment in thicknesses of 4 to 8 in for pavement application. RCC has gained the attention of the paving industry in recent years because of its history of low cost, rapid construction, and durable performance. The Virginia Transportation Research Council conducted this laboratory study to gain familiarity with RCC technology and to develop guidelines for its use in the field. RCC mixtures were successfully produced in the laboratory using locally available materials, and their properties were measured. These mixtures achieved compressive strengths around 5,000 psi in 28 days and had properties similar to those of conventional concrete in terms of compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and splitting tensile strength. A special provision was developed and used in the two field projects. The special provision was subsequently modified based on the field experience and is provided in the Appendix. VDOT should implement the RCC specification developed in this study for regular VDOT use of RCC. Use of RCC should be considered in future field applications, particularly where fast construction of rigid (concrete) pavement is needed; an example of such an area would carry heavily loaded, slow-moving vehicles such as at intersections and access roads to truck or bus parking areas. VDOT should annually monitor the long-term performance of the two constructed RCC projects reviewed in this study over a period of at least 10 years. Evaluations should document joint efficiencies for load transfer (through testing with the falling weight deflectometer), any visual evidence of deterioration of asphalt at joints, and any other general signs of pavement distress that may occur.

Book Guide for Roller compacted Concrete Pavements

Download or read book Guide for Roller compacted Concrete Pavements written by Dale S. Harrington and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) is an economical, fast-construction candidate for many pavement applications. It has traditionally been used for pavements carrying heavy loads in low-speed areas because of its relatively coarse surface. However, in recent years its use has expanded into commercial areas and local streets and highways. This guide provides owner-agencies, contractors, material suppliers, and others with a thorough introduction to RCC and its many applications. Based on current research and best practices, the guide provides detailed overviews of RCC properties and materials, mixture proportioning, structural design, and production and construction considerations, plus troubleshooting guidelines and an extensive reference list for more comprehensive information.

Book Application of Roller Compacted Concrete in Colorado s Roadways

Download or read book Application of Roller Compacted Concrete in Colorado s Roadways written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is a no-slump concrete mixture that is transported, placed, and compacted with the same construction equipment as asphalt pavement. RCCs were used to construct three sections of pavement in Weld County Road 28 (WCR 28), eastbound of State Highway (EB 66), and westbound of State Highway (WB 66). Three sets of field inspections were conducted: 1) during construction; 2) nine months after construction; and 3) two years after construction. Strength and durability behaviors of the RCCs were tested right after construction, and some of the material properties of the RCCs were further tested nine months after construction. Field inspections showed that the diamond ground surface texture of EB 66 and WB 66 is better and smoother than the surface of WCR 28 where large cracks and chipping occurred along both longitudinal and transverse directions. The relatively poor quality of RCC samples at WCR 28C location may be due to the different quality of concrete mix, the degree of compaction used during construction, and the absence of saw cut joints. The concrete specimens were tested for rapid chloride permeability, drying shrinkage, freeze-thaw resistance, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength. The test results obtained after the construction indicated that the chloride permeabilities are in the low to very low ranges, the drying shrinkages are in the normal range, and freeze-thaw resistance is fine. The compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength are also in the normal range similar to that of conventional concrete. The test results obtained nine months after the construction indicated that deteriorations occurred in the RCC concretes. After only nine months of service, the RCCs already showed noticeable changes in all of the selected properties tested. More tests and field inspections should be conducted in the future after a longer monitoring period to verify and validate the initial findings observed in the material properties and surface conditions of the RCC pavements.

Book Use of Roller Compacted Concrete Pavement in Stafford Virginia

Download or read book Use of Roller Compacted Concrete Pavement in Stafford Virginia written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) is a relatively stiffer hydraulic cement concrete mixture than regular concrete when fresh. Similar to regular concrete, RCC is a mixture of aggregate, cementitious materials, and water, but it is placed using asphalt pavers and compacted by vibratory rollers, and it hardens into concrete. RCC contains a low amount of water, exhibits no slump, and requires asphalt paving equipment for placement rather than expensive slip-form paving equipment. It does not contain reinforcement, tie-bars, or dowels. RCC can be placed and opened to traffic in a short period of time. All of these factors combined make it a relatively low-cost material for roadways compared to asphalt or conventional concrete pavements. However, RCC may lack the smoothness required for high-speed roadways and can undergo raveling and/or cracking; an asphalt overlay may remedy the smoothness and raveling issues. Although cracks might occur in the RCC and potentially reflect through the asphalt layer, such cracks should stay tight because of the low shrinkage of RCC. A composite pavement with RCC and an asphalt overlay has the potential to be a cost-effective long-lasting pavement system. The purpose of this study was to document the construction procedures and provide lessons learned for a RCC project recently completed by the Virginia Department of Transportation that covered about 134,000 ft2, equivalent to 2 lane-miles, at the Park & Ride lot in Stafford County, Virginia. About one-third of the RCC was used to rehabilitate the existing Staffordboro Boulevard (Route 684). The mixture used had 15% fly ash to provide improved durability and sustainability. Batches of the RCC mixture fluctuated in moisture content, and delays in placement sometimes occurred that also resulted in wet and dry mixtures. The compaction, surface smoothness, and road profile were affected by the fluctuations in moisture content. RCC cylinders prepared using a vibratory hammer usually exceeded compressive strengths of 1,600 psi and 4,000 psi at 12 hours and 28 days, respectively. Only a few early cracks were observed in the pavement. Opening to traffic at an early age for a section, i.e., within 5 to 6 hours of placement, did not result in any visual damage to the pavement; most sections were opened in less than 48 hours. RCC overlaid with 2 in of asphalt is performing well after two winters and 18 months of traffic for one section and after one winter and 8 months of traffic for the rest. Based on the observations in this study, for successful construction of RCC, proper compaction and mixing equipment are essential. Achieving the proper level of compaction in the field is key to attaining quality RCC. To avoid early cracks, joints need to be cut deeper than one-fourth depth of the pavement and continuous curing is essential. A continuous paving operation is needed to avoid unplanned and poor-performing cold joints. The Virginia Department of Transportation should consider RCC in future field trials, particularly for applications where fast construction of rigid (concrete) or composite pavement is needed.
