Book Application of Rate Theory to Accelerated Durability Testing of Structural Adhesives

Download or read book Application of Rate Theory to Accelerated Durability Testing of Structural Adhesives written by William L. Hufferd and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of absolute reaction rate theory concepts is explored as a scientific basis for establishing an accelerated testing methodology for adhesive bonded joints. Primary attention is given to the effects of time, moisture, temperature and load history. Some of the more dominant processes occurring during cure and aging of epoxy resin adhesives are identified and potential techniques for separating and monitoring the associated activation energies of these mechanisms with aging, environment and load history are discussed. Suggestions are also made for incorporating aging effects into appropriately rigorous constitutive models.

Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held in Newark, NJ, May 22-24, 2000. Since the first symposium, held in 1982, there had been tremendous research activity dealing with many aspects of adhesive joints. This volume contains a total of 21 papers, which were all properly peer reviewed, revised and edited before inclusion. Therefore, this book is not merely a collection of unreviewed manuscripts, but rather represents information which has passed peer scrutiny. Furthermore, the authors were asked to update their manuscripts, so the information contained in this book should be current and fresh. The book is divided into three parts: 1) General Papers; 2) Evaluation, Analysis and Testing; and 3) Durability Aspects. The topics covered include: molecular brush concepts in enhancing strength of adhesive joints; factors affecting performance of adhesive joints; substrate preparation and modification; interfacial/interphasial aspects; determination of locus of failure; analysis and evaluation of adhesive joints using various techniques; testing of adhesive joints; stress analysis; application of fracture mechanics; durability aspects; accelerated environmental degradation of adhesive joints; solvent uptake; and adhesives with special characteristics. This volume represents a commentary on the current R&D activity in this arena and it should be of great value and interest to anyone interested in adhesive bonding / adhesive joints. Furthermore, this volume contains a number of excellent review/overview articles, which should be of particular value.

Book Structural Adhesives

    Book Details:
  • Author : S.R. Hartshorn
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1468477811
  • Pages : 513 pages

Download or read book Structural Adhesives written by S.R. Hartshorn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adhesives in general and structural adhesives in particular are the subjects of much academic interest as well as commercial importance. Structural bonding, as a method of joining, offers a number of advantages over mechanical fastening. However, in order to achieve satisfactory results, the proper adhesive must be selected and the appropriate bonding procedures followed. The purpose of Structural Adhesives: Chemistry and Technology is to review the major classes of structural adhesives and the principles of adhesion and bonding as these relate to structural joints. Each chapter provides an overview of the topic under discussion with a list of references to the relevant literature. In addition to describing the chemistry involved, other aspects of structural adhesive technology are covered, such as formula tion, testing, and end uses. Some structural adhesives, especially epoxies and phenolics, have a long history of successful use and are now widely employed. Others, such as the structural acrylics and cyanoacrylates, are beginning to gain industrial acceptance. Urethanes and anaerobics have limited but important uses, while high-temperature adhesives are still largely in the research and development stage.

Book Characterization and Failure Analysis of Plastics

Download or read book Characterization and Failure Analysis of Plastics written by ASM International and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selection and application of engineered materials is an integrated process that requires an understanding of the interaction between materials properties, manufacturing characteristics, design considerations, and the total life cycle of the product. This reference book on engineering plastics provides practical and comprehensive coverage on how the performance of plastics is characterized during design, property testing, and failure analysis. The fundamental structure and properties of plastics are reviewed for general reference, and detailed articles describe the important design factors, properties, and failure mechanisms of plastics. The effects of composition, processing, and structure are detailed in articles on the physical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Other articles cover failure mechanisms such as: crazing and fracture; impact loading; fatigue failure; wear failures, moisture related failure; organic chemical related failure; photolytic degradation; and microbial degradation. Characterization of plastics in failure analysis is described with additional articles on analysis of structure, surface analysis, and fractography.

Book Environmental Durability Testing of Structural Adhesives Part II BR 127 FM 123

Download or read book Environmental Durability Testing of Structural Adhesives Part II BR 127 FM 123 written by D. Robert Askins and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program has been conducted to investigate the durability of a 250 F (121 C) curing modified epoxy structural adhesive in an elevated temperature, high humidity environment while under stress. The results indicated that, for shear stress levels low enough to preclude fracture of the adherend surface oxide layer (below 2000 psi (13.9 MPa)), the FM-123-2/BR-127 adhesive/primer system provides long-term durability at 120 F (49 C) and 95-100% R.H. on both phosphoric acid anodized (PAA) and optimized Forest Products Laboratory (OFPL) etched surfaces. The change in slope of the environmental stress-rupture time- to-failure curve for the PAA specimens seems to correlate well with the stress level at which oxide fracture would be expected to occur (about 3000 psi (20.65 MPa)) and may indicate a different degradation mechanism above this stress level than below. The effect of temperature upon the durability of the adhesive joints tested in this investigation is to reduce durability with increasing temperature, as was to be expected. At higher aging temperatures, the interface seems to be more susceptible to degradation than the adhesive, while at lower temperatures the reverse is true.
